Diti Discusses Gold vs Platinum Jewellery - What to Choose?

Gold and platinum are the two most commonly used metals for engagement and wedding rings. Both metals are unique, yet similar in several ways. Let’s look at how gold and platinum compare in appearance, cost, durability, and comfort.

Mumbai, Maharashtra -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/19/2014 -- Gold vs Platinum Appearance

The main distinguishing physical characteristic between gold and platinum is color. While platinum is naturally white, gold is naturally yellow. If one want a ring, then gold (also termed yellow gold) is the best option. However, if one want a white ring, one can opt for platinum or gold.

White gold rings are composed of gold, alloys, and a rhodium plating which gives it a white look that's very similar to platinum. 14k white gold and 14k yellow gold have the same gold content and purity (58.5% gold), but the alloys in white gold (and the rhodium plating) make it appear white, while the alloys in yellow gold do not.

While white gold looks very similar to platinum, over time the the rhodium plating in white gold will wear off and fade to a yellowish tinge. Once one re-polish and re-plate the white gold ring, it will look white again. Platinum, which is naturally white, will not fade to yellow. White gold turning yellow is a huge problem, and that's why we decided to give all our ethical rings a lifetime warranty that covers re-polishing and re-plating, so this should not be a concern if one go with us.

While gold and platinum are similar in price per gram, platinum is more dense and so more of it is required to make a ring. Additionally, platinum rings are usually 95% pure platinum, while 14k gold is only 58.5% gold (18k gold is 75% gold). Therefore, platinum rings are more expensive.

Gold vs Platinum Durability

Platinum is Stronger and More Durable

Though both gold and platinum are strong and durable precious metals, platinum is the stronger and more durable of the two. For example, the prongs holding the center stone of a platinum engagement ring are less likely to break then those of a gold engagement ring.

Platinum Scratches Easier than 14k Gold

Despite being stronger and more durable, platinum is a softer metal than 14k gold. This means it will get scratched a little easier than 14k gold would.

However, an important thing to note is when gold is scratched, the gold is lost and it looks like a scratch. When platinum is scratched, the platinum gets moved from one place on the ring to another, and it develops something called a patina finish (which looks like an antique or worn ring). A lot of people love and desire the patina finish.

The good thing is that re-polishing the ring will help restore the ring to near its original look for both platinum and gold. All Do Amore Rings include free lifetime polishing so if one purchase the ring from us, don't worry, one're in great hands.

Platinum is Truly White

As mentioned above, platinum will always stay white but white gold needs to be re-polished and re-plated occasionally to avoid a yellow hue. This yellow hue usually appears several months to several years after polishings, depending on how much wear and tear the ring faces. Since all Do
Amore rings come with free lifetime warranties that cover this, don't worry if one're getting the ring from
us.

When Choosing Between 14k and 18k, Pick 14k

If one decide to go with gold, make sure one pick 14k gold and not 18k gold. While 18k gold is more valuable, it is softer and will scratch easier than 14k gold will. 14k gold is cheaper,
and more scratch resistant! Why wouldn't one pick it?

Gold vs Platinum Comfort

Because platinum is more dense than gold, platinum rings will be heavier than gold as well. Some prefer the heavier weight, but some find the lightness of gold rings to be more comfortable. It is really up to each individual person.

One option for people seeking a comfortable ring it is to opt for one with a comfortable design, like this men's fingerprint wedding band.

One more benefit of platinum is that it is hypoallergenic. While gold rings do not create an allergy issue for most people, some can develop an allergic reaction from the nickel alloy used in gold rings.

Palladium as an alternative to Gold and Platinum

For those wanting the price of a gold ring, with some of the characteristics of platinum, palladium may be a great alternative to consider. Palladium is naturally white in color, like platinum, but is less costly than platinum and closer in price to 14k gold rings. It is also known to be hypoallergenic like platinum. We are able to manufacturer all of our rings in palladium.

I'm having my Ring Engraved, should I choose Gold, Palladium or Platinum?

Another common question we get is what metal choice to pick if getting a ring engraved. The answer is, it doesn't matter! Gold, palladium, and platinum can all be engraved without any issue. We engrave all of our rings for free so make sure one think of something good, and if one need help, here is a list of the best ring engraving ideas.

Final Thoughts and Summary on Gold vs Platinum

If one still can't decide between gold and platinum, don't worry. If one have the budget, go for platinum. If one don't, then gold (or palladium) is still a very precious metals and is an excellent choice. At the end of the day, all rings require some minimal upkeep and maintenance so make sure one purchase the rings from a company that has a lifetime warranty and will re-polish, clean, and re-plate the rings for free for life, like we do. If one have any questions on the rings metal choice, please don't hesitate to contact me and ask the question. My name is Krish and one're welcome to call and ask for me personally. I'd love to help answer any questions one have about gold vs platinum!

The retail forecast for 2014 looks very promising and there seems to bean opportunity to take this further. "Firstly, we have been very successful at utilising digital media and integrating marketing programmes that have positioned it well amongst the younger audience, making it emotionally significant for them. Once the knowledge of the value of platinum deepens, the demand will increase. Platinum Day of Love couple bands is the volume driver. Men's jewellery is a nascent category and it delivered very strong figures - some retailers reported doubling their sales. Also many have shown interest in stocking heavier items in terms of jewellery and PGI is evaluating the next segment of growth for the market,"said Vaishali Banerjee, Country Manager India, PGI.

Gold Price Volatility and Import Curbs Boost Platinum Jewelry Sales

The study showed that during the period 2013-14 the platinum jewelry market in India witnessed a staggering growth of 41% over the previous year, so much so, that India today has become the world’s fourth largest platinum jewelry market.

Mumbai, Maharashtra -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/09/2014 -- India, one of the three largest markets for gold jewelry in the world, with China and the United States, where owning and acquiring gold jewelry has great cultural significance from time immemorial, is set to break with age-old traditions, according to a recent research conducted by the London-based Platinum Guild International. In the wake of escalating world gold prices, and measures taken to curb gold imports, such as the imposition of high import duty, that necessarily resulted in the prices of manufactured gold jewelry skyrocketing beyond the reach of the average Indian gold consumer, the study conducted by PGI had shown an increase in tendency among the Indian middle-class consumer to turn towards platinum-based jewelry. The study showed that during the period 2013-14 the platinum jewelry market in India witnessed a staggering growth of 41% over the previous year, so much so, that India today has become the world's fourth largest platinum jewelry market.

A significant revelation of this study is that there is an unprecedented demand for platinum men's jewelry which the research uncovered was due to Indian men from the upper middle classes in the age group of 25-40 years going-in for platinum jewelry in a big way. It was found that men's platinum jewelry constituted 53% of the overall platinum jewelry sale in the country.

The PGI research further reveals that there has been a significant growth in the number of platinum jewelry outlets across the country during the period 2013-14. The total number of platinum jewelry retail stores in the country today has exceeded 800, and more are being opened as the demand increases. The demand is not restricted to metropolitan cities only, but can be seen also in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities. In the year 2000, there were only two platinum jewelry manufacturers and 15 platinum jewelry retailers, but today there are 15 manufacturers and 860 retailers.

Commenting on PGI's research findings, Vaishali Banerjee, PGI's country manager for India, said "Platinum men's jewellery is a very new category and coming from a very low base. It is now seeing very high growth. There are a lot of inquiries for men's jewellery and retailers are seeing a lot of walk-ins and new buyers. India is the fourth largest platinum jewellery market in terms of consumption globally. This is first time that we have done the research and there is no data available for the total market size of platinum jewellery in India."

The increase in demand for platinum jewelry is not a new phenomenon, but has been observed over the last 3-4 years, with consumer sales growing every year by 30-50%. According to government-approved import figures, the quantity of platinum imported into the country during the year 2013 was around four tonnes, which makes India the 4th-largest consumer in the world, after China, Japan and the US. Diamond jewelry manufactures who were quick enough to figure out the growing trend, shifted their focus on platinum-based diamond jewelry, and were able to increase their sales; platinum-based diamond jewelry accounting for almost 35% of the diamond jewelry sales in the year 2013.

Vijay Jain, CEO, ORRA, said, "There is a phenomenal growth in platinium jewellery in India. Be it engagement ring, festive and jewellery purchase on auspicious occasions such as Diwali, platinum has become integral part of the purchase. Platinum as it is known goes well with diamonds and it looks very elegant too."

"In urban India, men now prefer platinum to gold as they feel that the metal talks about their personality. Men find platinum more contemporary and global. This year, platinum has done extremely well and platinum love bands have emerged as a must for engagements in urban India. Diamond-studded platinum jewellery is popular among the young generation. We have witnessed a 30% same-store growth in platinum and in men's ring category, there has been a growth of 35-40%."

Joy Alukkas, chairman and managing director of retail giant Joyalukkas Group, said, "Men's jewellery in platinum include rings, chains and bracelets. However, even platinum cufflinks have become popular these days. Buyers prefer diamond-studded platinum bracelets and rings. In Chennai and Bangalore, platinum jewellery has gained a lot of popularity among the Muslim community,"

Retailers like Joyalukkas, Malabar Gold & Diamond, TBZ and Orra say that though south Indian men were the first to take the plunge, the platinum fever has now caught up with men from northern and western India as well.

According to PGI the consumer desire for platinum jewelry remains very strong in India. Though the Indian market is still relatively small on a global context, it has grown exponentially during the last few years. PGI projects a positive growth outlook for platinum jewelry in India during 2014 and beyond. The pace of growth is expected to continue at over 35%.

Diti Jewllery Online Discusses Platinum Demand to Jump 35% in 2014 on Rapidly Changing Consumer Preferences

Mumbai, Maharashtra -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/09/2014 -- India's platinum demand is likely to rise a staggering 35% in the calendar year 2014 on rapidly changing consumer preferences especially from bridal segment, which was earlier confined to gold and diamond.

A recent study by the apex industry body Platinum Guild International forecast India's platinum jewellery demand at 40 tonnes in 2014 on growing appetite of consumers of this white precious metal. In 2013, overall platinum demand stood at around 30 tonnes which saw an emphatic 41% growth from the previous year, of course from lower base.

While both gold and platinum offered negative returns in 2013 due to depressed sentiment in global economy. With the United States posted positive economic numbers which led to start of tapering in the monthly bond buying programme, investors started profit booking in gold. This gave a rise in demand of platinum as an alternative metal.

"Platinum has captured gold and diamond market in engagement and love band segments which is expected to grow significantly with the emergence of wedding. Even other segments in branded platinum jewellery have recorded significant jump in the last few years," said Vijay Jain, CEO, Orra.

Interestingly, platinum price in India in global markets was thrice that of gold few years ago. But, the gap narrowed with investors' skewed interest in platinum. With the global industrial activities remained under pressure on subdued economic performance, platinum demand was also under pressure being around two-third of platinum used for industrial purposes.

Now, introduction of new design and cuts, albeit in limited segment, platinum demand from jewellery sector has started moving up. Especially in India, with the price gap between gold and platinum narrowing down from over 100% (platinum was quoted with 100% premiums over gold in India) to 10-25% now depending upon the type of ornaments. "Consumers were a bit hesitant on the price front earlier. But, with the price difference narrowing down, platinum has become a preferred choice even for auspicious occasions. The metal continued to see lack of investors' interest, though," said Jain. The study - 'Retail Trade Barometer' reviewed and reported by Strat won Business Consulting with a cross section of retails from chain stores and independents who account for 50% of platinum jewellery sales, found retailers bullish for 2014.

"There is a very strong consumer desire for platinum jewellery in India despite being the overall market still relatively small in a global context. But the market has been growing at an exponential rate. The outlook for 2014 and beyond is also extremely positive. There are many factors which provide the basis for continued growth - the success of the Platinum Day of Love programme, increased distribution across India with more retailers stocking platinum, product innovations and exciting designs, and platinum's powerful emotional connection with consumers, " said Nicholas Graham Smith, Chief Operating Officer of Platinum Guild International.

The retail forecast for 2014 looks very promising and there seems to bean opportunity to take this further. "Firstly, we have been very successful at utilising digital media and integrating marketing programmes that have positioned it well amongst the younger audience, making it emotionally significant for them.
Diti Jewellery Platinum and Gold Discusses 15% of Online Gold Sells in Gujarat

Jewellery is an evergreen commodity that always has a lure. Whether for investment or special occasions, its value has always mattered.

Mumbai, Maharashtra -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/08/2014 -- E-tailing has emerged as the new way of selling jewellery. With the advent of internet and smartphones, online gold sales has seen a substantial rise in the last two years as people log on to e-commerce websites to buy various types of gold and silver items including coins.

The e-commerce market of gold and silver items is worth Rs 500 crore in India and Gujarat accounts for 12%-15% of online sales. Experts believe that the ease of ordering, doorstep delivery, purity assurance and no brokerage has led to the rise in online sales of jewellery. Two years ago, the e-commerce market of jewellery was worth Rs 300 crore.

In comparison to the retail market, jewellery products sold online are 2%-3% more expensive which e-tailers believe is a challenge. "Most people buying online are from the mid-20s to mid-30s and 80% are male," said Ketan Kothari, director, BullionIndia.in.

"Over 40% of products sold through our website are 1gm gold coins. Ahmedabad comes after Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai in terms of online buying of gold and silver items," added Kothari.

Along with buying, e-tailers also offer consumers the option to sell on their websites making it a 2-way gain for both.

"Due to restrictions on gold imports and slowdown in the market we recorded lower sales as we kept away from marketing. But with the upcoming marriage and festive season, sales will pick up online as people prefer to gift a lot during these times," added Kothari.

Of the jewellery sold in India, 35% is sold in Gujarat through retail and wholesale.

Both the IIJS and IIJW are organised by the GJEPC which is an Indian apex body representing 5,300 gemstone and jewellery members. Established in 1966, it operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.

Diti Discusses How Platinum Jewelry Strikes Gold

India might have a long-held history with gold but new research shows an increasing interest for platinum jewellery; making it the world’s fourth largest platinum jewellery market.

Mumbai, Maharashtra -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/20/2014 -- Sales of platinum jewellery have been on the rise for a number of years, but none more so than in India. While US and European sales increased 11 per cent and 10 per cent respectively, the Indian market achieved a 35 per cent increase in the 2013/2014 financial year over the previous year.

More staggering is the fact that the Platinum Guild International (PGI) is forecasting a further 40 per cent increase for the 2014/2015 year.

According to PGI CEO James Courage, the European market was driven by strong UK sales and a return to stronger export sales for Swiss watches, whereas the buoyant results in India could largely be attributed to a new marketing strategy.

"India is our fastest developing market and it has really come off the back of a successful marketing campaign based around the concept of 'Platinum Day of Love'. Interestingly, in India, most marriages are still arranged; so the family wedding is truly a "family" wedding, and it's after the wedding that the couple falls in love.

"Our research identified this as the emotional occasion between the husband and the wife. So our campaign centres around falling in love after your wedding," Courage told Jeweller.

The latest results were outlined by Courage while attending the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) in Mumbai last month.

The PGI is the worldwide marketing organisation dedicated to creating, expanding and strengthening consumer and trade markets for platinum jewellery and, because of the success of the "Platinum Day of Love" campaign, the PGI will develop a new marketing program for 2015.

"Our 'Platinum Day of Love' had a very strong following in other social media and to build on that, we are looking to launch another campaign around the wedding next year. It's been a short-long history [for PGI] if you like, in India. We started more than 10 years ago and we started from zero.

"What's been so positive about India is the way that we've worked very closely together with leading members of the manufacturing industry and the retail industry – they saw an opportunity to expand outside their traditional territory, and platinum offers the retailer a better margin than the other precious metals," Courage said.

He also explained that although platinum was very popular with young consumers, it took time not only for that generation to feel comfortable about selecting platinum over the traditional gold wedding jewellery, but also to engage their parents.

"Many decisions in India, as they are in other places for expensive purchases, would involve a parent's consent as well. We now feel that we've achieved a breakthrough in this important country, which coincided with really big changes taking place in India itself," Courage said.

"The formal retail sector is growing very rapidly. There are lots of large new jewellery retail outlets coming about, and not just in the big cities, but also in the secondary cities. And that too opens up for them the opportunity to sell across the wider range of products than with traditional gold jewellery."

Platinum versus gold
Courage said there were other reasons for the metal's success.

"The [price] premium of platinum over gold is still relatively small. So for the retailer and the consumer it's not such a stretch to reach for platinum. And it's important that there is not too high a premium because that really engages the retailer in particular into looking at the opportunity that they can take from platinum."

Courage explained that in markets such as China and India, the smaller price differential between platinum and gold meant that retailers could achieve a slightly better margin.

He added that while platinum was probably the fastest growing sector, it was, "Obviously off a much lower base than diamonds and gold, but positive in itself. I think driven by the fact that the gold and the platinum price were not far apart, means it's very comfortable both for the retailer to sell to, and for the consumer to buy – they can see the value in purchasing platinum."

Courage acknowldeged, however, that platinum had less than 2 per cent of the Indian gold market – which has been affected in recent times by political issues surrounding gold duty.

According to the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the shipment of gold jewellery declined from Indian Special Economic Zones by 28.78 per cent for the period between April and June.

India is reported to be one of the top three gold jewellery-exporting countries in the world.

Interestingly, according to PGI data, in 2000 only two platinum jewellery manufacturers operated in India and there were only 15 platinum jewellery retailers nationally; however, that has now increased to 15 platinum manufacturers and the number of retail stockists is now approaching 900.

Research conducted by PGI acknowledged that the white metal was unlikely to supplant gold entirely. Nonetheless, it did find that India had become the world's fourth largest platinum jewellery market in terms of consumption globally, and that there is an unprecedented demand for platinum men's jewellery, especially for upper middle class men in the age group of 25-40 years.

Exhibitors reasonably happy
While the IIJS organisers were expecting brisk trade at the 31st edition of the Mumbai trade fair, many diamond dealers said orders were in line with expectations.

Pankaj Parekh, vice chairman of the GJEPC said, "People were waiting for a [gold] duty reduction to be announced, and when it did not happen, people accepted the situation."

The Indian trade had urged a cut in the gold import duty, but the new government of Narendra Modi has left it unchanged at 10 per cent with the suggestion that once retailers understood that Indian authorities had decided to leave the gold import duty unchanged they would resume purchases of gold jewellery.

This year's five-day event was expected to match previous year's results with around 35,000 visitors and more than 850 exhibitors.

Prior to the trade show, the India International Jewellery Week (IIJW), a four-day consumer-focused event, took place and was once again a very successful.

The IIJW is a continuous catwalk style show combining jewellery and fashion, and of course Bollywood stars. Even though the venue seats well in excess of 1,000, it has become so popular that the final presentation – The Best of the Best – runs twice on the final night to cater for the demand for tickets.

Both the IIJS and IIJW are organised by the GJEPC which is an Indian apex body representing 5,300 gemstone and jewellery members. Established in 1966, it operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.
