Sagemont, An Independent School Serving Fort Lauderdale Encourages Students to Compete in French Competition

Sagemont, An Independent School in Broward, Fl Encourages Foreign Language Students To Compete And Reach Their Potential

Weston, Florida -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/20/2010 -- Although Sagemont, has many students who are fluent in Spanish, some of them have chosen to challenge themselves and study French for their Foreign Language requirement. Senior Alex Lopez-Cepero said, "I wanted to study something that not many other students on campus would consider studying. I didn't want to take the easy way out by taking Spanish since I was already fluent when I came to school in 9th grade. I decided to challenge myself and learn a completely new language."

Guiding the students through this "foreign" territory is Catherine Armand who has been teaching French at Sagemont for 7 years. She is a native Parisian and enjoys instilling her love of the French language and culture among her students. With her help, Sagemont seniors have been recognized the past two years as Outstanding Senior nominated by the American Association of Teachers of French. Last year, Sagemont's French Club participated for the first time in the state High School French competition called "Le congres de la culture francaise." Although many schools have been competing for years, Sagemont received seven top ranking awards. Ms. Armand said, "As a teacher it is very gratifying to be prompted by students who are confident and want to compete at the state level, knowing they can succeed. I wanted them to experience what this famous competition entailed. They won many awards last year which encourages them for this year." Foreign language study is encouraged as part of the college prep curriculum.

At Le Congres, students compete in solo, team and school wide events. Solo events included: discours where a student had to choose a random topic given by the judges and speak about it. Sagemont made it to the quarterfinals in casse-tete, a 3-student team challenge that has students answering trivia questions. In the end, they were eliminated by the winning team.

There were also two school wide events: Album, where students had to create a scrapbook featuring all the events the students participated in during the year. The scrapbook followed the year's theme of French festivals. The second school wide event, projet, had the students present a project that would illustrate the theme. Sagemont chose to do a collage inspired by the festivals in the French-speaking world.

According to Ms. Armand, Le congres is a cultural field trip. "The students were excited to be able to communicate with others in the language they had been learning for several years. They were impressed to see so many students, approximately 1500 from 54 schools, speaking, reading, singing, and acting in French."

The students of this accomplished independent school are already busy preparing for this year's competition which is in Orlando April 7-11. Principal Gayle Iacono said, "The Le Congres de la Culture Francaise provides students with an enriching opportunity to collectively share knowledge related to French Culture and language. It is a rewarding way for students across the state of Florida to compete while showcasing their mastery of the French language."

Middle School Triplets are Triple Threat at Sagemont, a Broward Private School

Sagemont’s Middle School triplets embody the school’s college prep model to strive for top grades, participate in sports and clubs plus engage in community service work.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/30/2010 -- It's always tough to be the new kid at school. But if you are one of a set of triplets, at least you already have two friends. Alina, Lali and Niko Leontarakis came to The Sagemont School, a Broward County private school, last year entering in sixth grade. Although they are triplets, each child has different talents and pursues their own track of activities. All three children are honor roll students and all say that their role models are their parents.

Prior to coming to this college prep school, the triplets were already involved in sports, art classes, drama club and chorus. Knowing that part of Sagemont's philosophy is for students to get involved in sports and clubs, each student jumped right in showing their own style. Although they all love sports, their parents insist they make good grades in order to participate. Alina, the oldest triplet, says, "In our family school comes before sports so I had to work hard and make the honor roll." In 6th grade she played basketball and ran track. This year, she will go out for the tennis team. Her best memory of her first year at Sagemont was Battle of the Grades, the centerpiece to Sagemont's home coming activities.

Lali, the 2nd oldest, enjoyed her first year at Sagemont because "they offered a lot of different activities. I was in the Environmental and Builders Club, and I loved being on the track team." She is interested in acting, fashion and make-up. "I love to give my cousins make-overs!" Lali won a special Sagemont Community Service Award. She participated in a Cystic Fibrosis Walk, she made sandwiches for the disadvantaged with the Builder's Club and did beach cleanup for the Environmental Club. In addition to this, on her own, Lali collected clothing from her friends and the community for an organization called Fundamas in Columbia. This year at Sagemont, Lali is excited to try out for the Cross Country team as well as take an Art class. Her best memory of her first year at Sagemont was also Battle of the Grades.

The youngest triplet and only boy, Niko, is a huge sports fan who enjoyed playing basketball and baseball in his first year at Sagemont. This year he is going to try out for the soccer team. "I am excited to try out for the soccer team because I haven't played team soccer since I was seven years old." Niko also has been perfecting his running by participating in local runs for charity organizations. His best memory of his first year at Sagemont was riding on the bus every day to baseball practices and games with the guys. "That was so cool!"

Dr. Brent Goldman, President of the Sagemont School, said "Alina, Lali and Niko embody what our school is about. They are great kids, outstanding students, and are actively involved in school activities and the community."

At Sagemont, a College-prep in Broward, Early Education Program Mirrors College Prep Philosophy

Sagemont’s college prep philosophy starts with prekindergarten and kindergarten students who are exposed to targeted activities designed to be academically, physically and emotionally stimulating.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/21/2010 -- The Sagemont School strives to provide students with an enriching college-prep experience.

This includes a balance of challenging academics, extra-curricular activities and community service opportunities. Sagemont's college prep philosophy starts with the school's youngest students in Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. Fun and engaging activities are presented to the early childhood students all with the intention of being academically, physically and emotionally stimulating.

The early education daily lessons include a blend of pre-reading, vocabulary and mathematics. The activities also foreshadow concepts in science and social studies. In addition, Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten students get to participate in the school's program for music, Spanish, art, technology, PE and swimming.

At an early age, students are introduced to global concepts like community service projects. Last year, Sagemont Kindergarten students were challenged to do chores in order to earn money to buy shoes for a less fortunate Kindergarten class in Fort Lauderdale. The kids took to the assignment with gusto and were able to donate 50 pairs of shoes to the class.

Kindergarten teacher, Julie Wise, explained "This was an amazing experience for our class. It even inspired one student to start his own project of collecting dish soap to give to the Bird Sanctuary of Tampa in order to save birds endangered by the oil spill."

Barbara Eisensmith, a Sagemont prekindergarten teacher for over ten year's said, "Our students participate in the school wide PeaceWorks program which teaches youngsters how to be productive students, family members, and citizens. We incorporate the I-Care vocabulary into our daily activities."

Sagemont's early education team is trained in Differentiated Instruction which is geared to assessing each student's learning style and level. Eisensmith added, "We practice the philosophy that each child is a unique individual and we work with the whole child and their needs."

Computer education is introduced even at the prekindergarten level. Students are on computers frequently, and they are taught the basics using a special mouse designed for young hands. Wise said, "We even have kindergarten students who make their own power point presentations. They can look up information on the internet, and find clip art online to complete homework projects!"

Each year, the students perform in several on stage programs. These programs are geared to build poise, stage presence and confidence. This early training makes it easier for students to later perform in plays, sing in the chorus, and present oral projects. Eisensmith explained, "The children can be shy at first, but they end up having a great time presenting for their parents and family members."

Sagemont's prekindergarten and kindergarten students are very busy indeed. From learning early reading skills, keeping a daily journal starting in kindergarten to learning Spanish and swim stroke lessons, students go home with a sense of accomplishment. Parents know that their children are off to a good start.

Kindergartener at Sagemont College Prep School in Weston, FL Helps Save Birds Endangered by Oil Spill

Sagemont kindergarten student enlists his schoolmates, family & friends to collect 169 bottles of Dawn dishwashing liquid to save birds endangered by oil spill.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/16/2010 -- Oskar Garcia, A Sagemont kindergarten student, loves birds! His teacher and mom say that he is an absolute authority on the topic. Each day he comes to school with new facts about birds. He can tell you about land birds and water birds. He can list their species, coloration and where they live. Oskar's bedroom is decorated in a bird theme and his clothes usually have some type of bird design on them.

This six year old approached his kindergarten teacher very distressed about the pending oil situation in the gulf waters. He was worried that many birds will soon be covered in oil and he wanted to do something to help. He and his teacher, Vickie Stofsky, searched on Google to get ideas about what they could do to help save the birds. They came up with the plan to ask Oskar's classmates, friends and family members to donate bottles of Dawn dishwashing liquid which is known to be able to safely dissolve tar and oil from animals who get covered in the stuff. They planned to deliver the bottles to Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary located in Tampa (seabirdsanctuary.com). This is the largest wild bird hospital in the U.S. and it is one location where birds are to be brought in case they become drenched in the goo approaching the shoreline.

Oskar was ecstatic about the possibility of helping. He was able to motivate the group to collect about 169 bottles of detergent. He, his family and his teacher's family all drove up to Tampa, Florida to deliver the bottles. They were told that this much dishwashing liquid could potentially save 2000 birds. Oskar simply said "I love birds and I wanted to help."

Earlier in the school year, Oskar's class participated in a community service project where they earned money to provide new shoes for elementary school children in Broward County who very rarely ever get new shoes. Mrs. Stofsky, said "from this project, Oskar became empowered and even at his young age realized that he had the ability to make a difference in the world." Sagemont promotes community service projects for its students from preschool through 12th grade with the intention to empower students in their formative years.

Sagemont, a College Prep in Weston, Encourages Students to Dissect Worn out Computers to Discover How They Work

Sagemont students dressed in goggles and gloves dissect worn out computers using screwdrivers and wire cutters to learn more about how the machines actually work. This is a hands on project that teaches the discovery learning process.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/05/2010 -- Sagemont Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade are doing more than just working on computers; they are dissecting them. Doris Quintero, Media and Technology Specialist, came up with the idea when she was teaching Kindergarten. "One of my students, while practicing letter sounds using the computer, stopped working, knocked on the computer and asked, "who is in there?" After that incident, I created a unit on machines and how they work. This year, at the private school in Broward County, Fl, one of the trimester themes is Inventions and Inventors. This was a great opportunity to reprise the unit and concentrate on computers."

Dressed in goggles and gloves and armed with wire cutters and screwdrivers, the students have been busy disassembling worn out computers. After discovering the hard drive inside his computer, a 5th grade student said, "I never knew such a small part could power so much. It's like a brain." Upon removing the cover of the computer, a 3rd grader exclaimed, "It looks like a little town from up high. " She later discovered the part she was referring to as a town was the motherboard.

The children have also been involved in using the media center computer lab to research the history of computers, names of parts, who invented or patented a particular part and why certain parts are necessary for the computer to function. Eventually the students will disassemble other machines to find similarities in parts and create a mock invention of their own. Then they will answer the big question: What would the world be like if the computer was not invented?

Principal, Joann Laskin, said, "When students have the opportunity to see how something works from the inside out using the discovery learning process, they gain skills and information that will help them throughout their lives in school and beyond. This process utilizes hands on learning, questioning, investigating, analyzing, interpreting, understanding, and answering."

Sagemont, a College Prep in Broward, Helps Students Go the Extra Mile in Planning for The Future

Sagemont offers students the opportunity to experience a taste of life in the real world before graduation. The Academic Internship Program provides students an edge in choosing a future career path.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/19/2010 -- The Sagemont School is giving students an opportunity to experience life in the real world before they even graduate high school. The Academic Internship Program pairs students with businesses in the community where they work for 5 hours per week. For the first two weeks of the school year, high school students meet with college counselor Mellesia Nelson to complete their resume and go over interviewing skills and professional behavior. Nelson says, "The Sagemont School's Internship Program provides the students with hands on learning and skill building in the real world. Our students are able to explore a potential career choice before heading to college. Not only does this give them an edge but it also helps them define their future goals."

Scott Payne, a Sagemont senior is currently interning at Windmill Chiropractic. Scott says, "The internship has been very helpful in understanding my career choice and has given me firsthand experience in my field of interest. It has taught me about the business side of chiropractic medicine."

Junior, Samuel Vivas, is currently doing an internship at Cleveland Clinic. Because of his involvement during the school year, he is aware of a summer program at the hospital. And because he is already a standout in the internship program, he will have a higher chance of being selected for the summer program.

In addition, during the summer, many Sagemont students take advantage of various programs that will give them a competitive edge after graduation. Wilson Mourad, a Sagemont Senior interested in studying medicine, took part in the Chemistry and Biology Program at Cornell University last summer. "Studying at Cornell was one of the most worthy and enriching experiences in my life. I gained experience in time management, made choices with regard to my responsibilities, independently solved my problems and made new friends." Mourad, who was at Cornell for 7 weeks, took a chemistry and English class and enjoyed participating in club sports.

Last summer, Melissa Hewitt (10th grade) traveled to a small town just outside of Nice, France to participate in a French Language Immersion Program. With the help of her home stay family which included two teenage brothers, Melissa was able to grasp French much quicker than in her traditional classroom studies. Hewitt felt the program was a double win for her, "I not only learned a lot about the French culture, life and language; I also gained more self-confidence which will definitely benefit me in the future."

Dr. Brent Goldman, President of The Sagemont School commented, "I am very impressed by our student's motivation to go beyond their prescribed academics and participate in a variety of very exciting internship and travel programs. These students come back with many success stories that help them as they are applying to the colleges and universities of their choice"

Sagemont, A College Prep in Weston, Provides a Home-stay Program Attracting Students Worldwide

Sagemont’s international home-stay program allows foreign high school students to pursue their academic goals as well as learn American culture in a college prep setting.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/04/2010 -- The Sagemont School has always had an international flavor with over 40 countries represented by its student body. As a result, it was natural for the school to develop an international home-stay program that attracts accomplished high school students who want to study abroad. According to Sagemont President, Dr. Brent Goldman, "The International Student Program at Sagemont is extremely unique. There are many private college prep high schools in the country that host international students but in a dorm situation. At Sagemont, our international students live with local host families, which enables the students to become fully immersed in our language and culture."

Currently in its 4th year, the international program has attracted students from Bermuda, Bahamas, Brazil, Germany, Venezuela, China, Korea, Taiwan, Serbia, Croatia, Russia, Japan, and Norway.

Sagemont's ESOL teacher, Erin Gustitis, once an International student herself, mentors the students to ensure the smoothest transition. Her job is made easier by the fact that Sagemont is so culturally diverse. Beth Hjartnes, Director of Admissions and International Enrollment, said, "South Florida is known for being an eclectic cultural area. Therefore, international students have a great opportunity to fit in with ease."

School in the United States is different for many of these students because they are used to more classes packed into a week's schedule. Yuki Nozasa, a Sagemont graduate from Japan said, "Once I became used to school at Sagemont, it would have been difficult to go back to Japan. I like this system better because we study fewer things at a time, and this allows me to get a better understanding of my subjects."

Sagemont frequently fields calls from families abroad who are interested in their program. International students want to come to Sagemont to learn English fluently in order to better their opportunities when they return to their own country. Students, who are from English speaking countries, come seeking better educational opportunities. The Sagemont School is popular because of its small size and beautiful location in South Florida near to beaches and noted attractions. Sagemont's study abroad program offers ESOL instruction and English immersion. The college prep high school curriculum includes a variety of Honors and Advanced Placement choices. Families are happy to find that Sagemont is a SEVIS approved school and can facilitate I-20 Visas.

Once here, most international students decide to remain in the USA to study at an American university. "We currently have several international graduates attending American universities and we continue to 'keep tabs' on them. They return to Weston for the holidays to be with their home-stay families when they cannot fly home", states Hjartnes.

Most students commit to one year but end up staying to graduate. So Jung Lee, a senior from Korea, has lived with Beth Hjartnes and her family for four years. Lee said, "I came to Sagemont to study for one year in 9th grade. I am now a senior and my family is coming to my graduation. Sagemont has prepared me for college both educationally and socially. My home-stay family has given me constant direction and support and will continue to guide me in my college decisions."

"Having an international student live with us has given me and my family a global perspective that is priceless," said Hjartnes. Sojung's desire to learn and study was a great lesson for our entire family. She is a model for all American students to learn by."

The Sagemont School offers a study abroad private high school program with home stay located in Florida. The Sagemont School is very unique because of its small size and popular location in South Florida located near beaches and popular attractions. This study abroad program offers ESOL instruction and English immersion. The college prep high school curriculum includes a variety of Honors and Advanced Placement choices. Sagemont is a SEVIS approved school serving 800 students from kindergarten through high school graduation. SEVIS I-20 Visas available.

Sagemont National Junior Honor Society members collect holiday gifts for Kids in need in conjunction with the ChildNet Agency serving Broward County

Weston, Florida -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/17/2009 -- The Sagemont School has always made community service an important part of their curriculum. Sagemont's National Junior Honor Society is helping to make the holidays much brighter for 350 kids. Child Net is Broward's Community Based Care lead agency selected by the state to manage the local system of services and supports for Broward's abused, abandoned and neglected children and their caregivers. Due to the state of the economy, ChildNet lost a lot of sponsors this year. When they called to see if Sagemont could help with the kids' holiday wish list, the Junior Honor Society enthusiastically agreed to take on the project. Eighth grader and Secretary of NJHS, Nivita Sharma said, "I am happy to participate because it is wonderful to be able to make a child happy who lives in our own community."

Although NJHS is sponsoring this project, the entire middle and high school is participating. Each student and staff member was given a wish list for a child. It is a very large undertaking because there are 350 lists with three gifts on each list. Each gift must be labeled and returned with all 350 lists.

Dare White is a math teacher at The Sagemont Upper School and is the sponsor of NJHS. "I really think that it is important to help children and needy adults in our own backyard. We often look internationally and don't realize there are so many needs in Broward and Dade County. Living in a community like Weston our children are often shielded from some of the harsh realities of life. I wanted them to get a sense of how many children have to live." Tenth grader Angela Tuffy said "it is nice to be involved because we have so much and this might be the only gift the child receives for the holiday season."

The Sagemont School offers a college prep curriculum and operates two campuses in Weston, Fl.
Sagemont, a Private School in Broward Florida, Serves up Food for Thought, As Art Students Help the Hungry in Their Area

Sagemont students reach out in conjunction with the national Empty Bowls Program as a reminder to help stop world hunger

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/09/2009 -- Fourth and fifth graders at The Sagemont School are doing their part to help end world hunger. The students are participating in the Empty Bowls Program, which was created at a Detroit high school in 1990. The Michigan students created 120 bowls and the staff paid $5 for soup and bread. As they ate their lunch, some information was shared regarding hunger in the Detroit area. After lunch, the staff was told to keep the bowls as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. It is now an international program for which millions of dollars have been raised.

Sagemont's Elementary School Art Teacher, Lauren Tubbs, enjoys finding ways in which her love for the arts can be used in a positive way. Tubbs said, "It is my personal goal as an art educator to help my students discover a love and appreciation for art that will hopefully last a lifetime. The Sagemont School is very involved with different charitable endeavors each year and the students, families, and staff here are all very generous so I knew the Empty Bowls Project would be a success."

Fifth grader Rebecca Schultz said, "It makes me feel good to be involved in the Empty Bowls Project because I know that I am helping people who are less fortunate than I am and it's a good way to give back to my community."

The students have already begun creating their ceramic bowls. After the bowls have been constructed and allowed to dry, they will be fired and glazed. In January, parents will be invited to a spaghetti and meatballs luncheon for a $20 donation. The parents will get to keep their child's empty bowl as a reminder of the empty bowls around the world. The money raised will be donated to Feeding South Florida, which provides food to those in need in the South Florida area.

The Sagemont School in Broward Flourishes As its Technology and Student Body Continue to Grow.

Sagemont, a Private School serving Broward County has been on the cutting edge in technology for the past 14 years.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/24/2009 -- After 14 years of steady growth, The Sagemont School has developed into one of South Florida's leading private school's. With recent additions and successes the school's goal of delivering the best possible preschool through 12th grade education has been pushed to even greater heights.

Sagemont's elementary school program recently received the distinction of being one of just over 300 schools designated as a founding chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society. Sagemont's preschool through 5th grade has also been recognized for offering an innovative Spanish program that is geared to both non-native and native speakers.

In August, both Sagemont campuses opened their doors with an assortment of new items to further the school's commitment to technology. For the elementary school student's, 70 new computers were purchased and the cafeteria had a complete make-over, with professional theater lights and a projection system. The middle school and high school curriculum was enhanced by a wider use of Promethean software applications along with Ativeslates (interactive whiteboards) and Promethean ActivExpressions (hand-held interactive communication devices).

In a time when teacher layoffs and decreases in arts funding are rampant, Sagemont has hired a new drama instructor which will have a positive impact on student drama productions and competitions. The athletics department also continues to expand with the addition of a coach plus new weight training and conditioning offerings.

The Sagemont School is committed to following a proven college-prep model from elementary through high school graduation. The school promotes a balance of solid academics, extra-curricular activities and community service. Standout achievements in extracurricular activities include the 2009 4th & 5th grade Odyssey of the Mind team performing at the state level competition. Sagemont also had a number of middle school winners at the Broward County Science Fair, and winners from all age levels in the City of Weston Art Contest. The high school Thespian students represented their school at the state level, and in athletics the varsity boys' tennis team won their 6th straight district title and the boys' basketball team also won a district title. When it comes to community service, Sagemont always tries to top its efforts. 2009 brought the newly established Sagemont Kids Helping Kids foundation which raised more than $9,000 for childhood cancer research and support and the upper school campus Environmental Club succeeded in saving 32.9 acres of rain forest through fundraising and building awareness. Academically, Sagemont excels more with each passing year. The graduating class of 2009 earned a substantial amount of merit scholarships. 2009 Graduate, Kevin Maddox, was offered more than $257,600 in total! Gayle Iacono, Principal at the Upper School Campus states "A differentiating factor for our middle and high school is our individualized college entrance guidance. We start this program in 6th grade. The pay-off for following and excelling in this college-prep model is that each year our graduates have received an impressive array of outstanding college acceptances."

The Sagemont School offers a college prep curriculum and operates two campuses in Weston, Fl. In Preschool through Grade 5, The Sagemont School provides core concepts in a creative environment combined with weekly specials that include science, art, music, Spanish for non-native & native speakers, swimming, PE and media and technology. From middle school through high school graduation, Sagemont students choose from a variety of regular, honors and AP course work. In addition, students share in a networked wireless laptop environment and participate in a comprehensive guidance program for college entrance.

Sagemont, Private High School in Broward County Partners with Local Ultimate Sports Institute to Strengthen and Condition School’s Varsity Athletes

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/19/2009 -- The Sagemont School is taking athletic training and preparation to a new exciting level. Recently, this private high school, announced a partnership with Ultimate Sports institute (USI), a Sports Performance & Fitness facility located at the Sheinberg Family YMCA in Weston Regional Park. USI is providing strength and conditioning training to Sagemont varsity athletes, and although they just started training on September 14, the student athletes are already very excited. High school basketball player Rod Days said, "USI training helps me so much as an athlete. My goal is to play basketball in college and this training helps my physical development, something I'll definitely need to be successful at the next level." Sagemont Head Basketball Coach Adam Ross said, "Our relationship with The Ultimate Sports Institute gives our players and our program a distinct advantage. USI helps our athletes with strength and flexibility which are all crucial to injury prevention. A side effect of their training is greater explosiveness which dramatically enhances our performance on the court."

USI's focus on injury prevention and sport specific workouts will teach Sagemont High School athletes techniques and practices that will last a lifetime.

USI was founded by Dr's Robert Sheinberg and Alex DeSimone of the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine, Terry Kirby (former Miami Dolphin) and David Bush (former Miami Dolphin strength trainer). Bush, who is now, the Director of USI, said, "USI is honored to partner with such a great school where the entire athletic program focuses on giving the athletes the best opportunities to be successful. We look forward to supporting the extremely dedicated coaches of The Sagemont School by providing their athletes with the most cutting-edge strength & conditioning program possible and together help these athletes reach their full potential."

Sagemont School President, Brent Goldman, is looking forward to the partnership between his school and USI. "The most important reason we wanted to have our students train with USI is injury prevention. The fact that our students will gain a competitive edge is a bonus."

In addition to team training, USI offers a variety of fitness programs for the whole family including personal training, Pilates and youth fitness programs.

The Sagemont School, a Private School in Broward County, Gets High Marks for Using Technology in Classrooms

Sagemont’s middle school and high school are harnessing the creative power of Activslates and Promethean software while the elementary students are utilizing their new mobile laptop unit to create innovative projects and presentations.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/18/2009 -- At The Sagemont School located in Weston Florida, there have been no program cuts and lots of new extra's to keep the students engaged, involved, and participating in a high tech environment. Sagemont middle and high school students are reaping the benefits of new electronic units called Promethean Activslates and ActivExpressions. Activslates are interactive whiteboards. The Promethean software is extensive and has endless possibilities for enhancing all areas of curriculum.

"The Promethean ActivExpressions is the piece that gets the kids excited and paying attention", says Gayle Iacono, Principal at this college prep school's upper school campus. ActivExpressions look similar to a cell phone having a small digital screen, a number keypad, and symbols for Math and Science. The units interact directly with the Activslates allowing students to participate anonymously with the class while the teacher is able to evaluate who has learned the lesson.

This technology is currently being used in Sagemont's high school science, social studies, and language arts classes. Christi Safant, Sagemont's lead teacher for science explains, "I love to see the kids enthusiastic and competitive about participating in class learning games. This technology lets me be creative in how I can assess the students' grasp of a new concept."

Last spring, at the elementary school campus added a Mobile Laptop Lab. The lab includes twenty laptops housed in a mobile cart that recharges the units. Doris Quintero, Sagemont's Lower School Campus Media & Technology specialist says, "These laptops have allowed us to enhance our interdisciplinary projects. Last year's fifth graders were involved with a project that linked social science, media, and science together. Students created their own fictional planets, wrote papers, conducted experiments, and presented the whole project in a PowerPoint presentation. This was all completed by using the laptops during different periods of the day in different areas." The laptops are introduced to the students as early as 1st grade. Here the youngest students begin their keyboard training and learn to care for the units.

Incoming 6th grader, Angel Martinez, says, "Using the mobile laptops last year was so cool! We made brochures, newspapers, and PowerPoint presentations. I totally feel ready to work on my laptop in middle school. " This past summer, 11th Grader, Nick Cardamone, participated in a 3-week comprehensive engineering program at Georgia Tech University. He said, "Even though I was interacting with a very select group of students, I felt like I had a real edge. I was extremely confident with all the technology that they presented since I have been using a laptop since 6th grade at Sagemont. The engineering instructors even made mention of my abilities which made me feel great!"

Sagemont's small class size, individualized attention and use of technology throughout the curriculum is a differentiating factor for this school.

Sagemont will host it's New Family Open House in October. Sunday, October 18 from 1-3pm is the date for the Upper School Campus serving grades 6-12 and Wednesday, October 21 starting at 9:30am is the date for the Lower School Campus serving preschool starting at age three through grade 5. Call 954-389-2454 x366 to RSVP.

Camp Sagemont in Broward County County Offers a New Drama Camp, Art Camp & Science Camp and the Creative Juices Are Flowing

Camp Sagemont added a drama camp, art camp and science camp to its offerings this summer. Students are painting like Van Gogh, acting like Marcelle Marceau and blowing up pint size volcanoes plus enjoying fun in the sun each day.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/09/2009 -- School's out for summer and the fun has begun at Camp Sagemont a respected day camp in Broward County. This year kids can choose from three new specialty camps including art, drama and science each offered for one four week session.

The Art Camp exposed campers to many types of artistic styles, media, and processes. The kids learned about tie-dying and linoleum block printing to cloisonne jewelry making and Russian architecture. In addition to hands on projects, campers enjoyed weekly field trips to the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, Morikami Japanese Museum and Gardens, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and the Norton Art Museum.

"My goal for this program was to not only expose students to a wide range of media and art types, but to also help the students push themselves creatively and acquire a greater artistic foundation that they can build upon as they grow as artists," said Lauren Tubbs, Coordinator of the Summer Art Camp.

The art camp helped the drama camp with their backdrops for the drama presentation which included scenes from Seussical, Annie, and Alice in Wonderland.

A love of the theater is what inspired camper Erica Merlino to register for Sagemont's Drama Camp. "I wanted to come to Drama Camp because this year I was in our school musical and I loved it…I want to continue performing!"

Campers learned all aspects of theater including film acting, improvisation, choreography, set design and make up. They also enjoyed weekly field trips to watch live theater performances. . "My goal for this program was to enable students to not only enhance their acting styles, but to gain an appreciation for all aspects of the theater, both on and off the stage," said Asha Ramcharitar, Coordinator of the Summer Drama Camp.

Children enrolled in Science camp will have a chance to learn about the Everglades, Marine life, Solar System and Chemistry. Bill Simmons, known to campers as Mr. Bill, says his goal is to show children that science can be fun. "I love to see kids get excited about science. That is what keeps me excited about science." The campers will perform various hands on experiments to learn about the above-mentioned subjects.

Although the Art, Drama and Science Camps are new this summer, Sagemont's ever popular Sports Camp is back in full swing. Sports enthusiasts will spend their days playing a variety of different sports as well as enjoying field trips to places such as Rapids Water Park, bowling and a Florida Marlins game.

Campers enrolled in any of the specialty camps will also enjoy computers, swimming and the video arcade. Campers will also participate in the annual tradition of color war which includes many competitions, games and activities. Camp Sagemont will close out the fun filled summer with a carnival. From August 3-14, there will be two weeks of mini-camp available which will be a help to many working parents looking for additional summer programming.

The Mountain Peak Academy addresses the individual needs of students with mild learning disabilities. Students excel within a mainstream college prep private school setting combined with specialized small group training.

Weston, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/06/2009 -- The Mountain Peak Academy (MPA) in Weston, Florida was created to address the needs of a special community of students whose abilities surpass their academic achievements due to a learning disability. The children in this program must have average to above-average intelligence with a professionally diagnosed learning disability and minimal behavioral issues. MPA students enjoy the benefit of interacting and studying within the mainstream setting of a small college prep private school while also receiving individualized attention and instruction through the classes that the Mountain Peak Academy provides. MPA program instructors work collaboratively with the students' mainstream teachers to ensure that the professionally prescribed classroom modifications are being provided in all educational settings.

Participants in The Mountain Peack Academy are evaluated for entrance using a combination of tools that can include an IEP that has been developed by the student's past school system, a current pshychoeducational evaluation, recent grade reports and a personal MPA screening. The Mountain Peak Academy is often able to accept funds that have been awarded to families from the McKay Scholarship.

Mountain Peak Academy administrators believe that within the proper learning environment, each student can progress and develop in the classroom while acquiring knowledge in important school subject areas. Class work is designed to promote student success, and children are encouraged to learn at their own pace and style. As students gain skills, they are monitored and encouraged to continue to move forward to more challenging material. True learning is emphasized over rote memorization. The programs goal is to build self-esteem among students with mild learning differences and work towards student independence. This program can be a good alternative for students looking for an alternative to a traditional county run ESE program

The curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade incorporates time-tested strategies that produce results. This specialized curriculum focuses on language arts , oral and written communication, and grade appropriate mathematics. Social studies is also included for fourth and fifth graders. The curriculum for middle school and high school focuses on the following areas: intensive language arts, intensive reading, and intensive mathematics.
