Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York Discusses Varicose Veins: Right Treatment, Right Results

When it comes to treating varicose vein disease, Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York, can’t stress enough the importance of getting the right treatment.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/16/2014 -- In the last decade, advancements in technology have increased success rates to nearly 100 percent and reduced procedure times to under an hour.

But sometimes seeing the results from the treatments could take some time.

"While there are many noticeable benefits to seeking proper vein treatment from a certified venous and lymphatic specialist, some of the biggest benefits come with a little patience and trust in your physician," Schulman said.

For example, he said patients suffering from severe leg ulcerations could take a few months to a full year to heal completely from their open wounds.

"But when considering the years of suffering seemingly helplessly before getting treated the time is certainly worth the wait," he said.

Schulman said some patients who received laser vein treatment in the past often remember little of what life was like beforehand.

"We are always encouraged to hear stories like these where the benefits are almost taken for granted because the procedure and the healing process were so minimally invasive and relatively pain free that patients can return to activities once missed without a second thought," he said.

And while varicose vein treatment could require more than one procedure, Schulman said the benefits of seeking the treatment as soon as possible and following through until they are completed in full will significantly increase the patient's overall well-being.

Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York Discusses How Are Varicose Veins Treated?

Varicose veins are treated with lifestyle changes and medical procedures. The goals of treatment are to relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and improve appearance.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/14/2014 -- If varicose veins cause few symptoms, the doctor may simply suggest making lifestyle changes. If the symptoms are more severe, the doctor may recommend one or more medical procedures. For example, we may need a medical procedure if we have a lot of pain, blood clots, or skin disorders caused by the varicose veins.

Some people who have varicose veins choose to have procedures to improve how their veins look.

Although treatment can help existing varicose veins, it can't keep new varicose veins from forming.

Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle changes often are the first treatment for varicose veins. These changes can prevent varicose veins from getting worse, reduce pain, and delay other varicose veins from forming. Lifestyle changes include the following:

Avoid standing or sitting for long periods without taking a break. When sitting, avoid crossing the legs. Keep the legs raised when sitting, resting, or sleeping. When we can, raise the legs above the level of the heart.

Do physical activities to get the legs moving and improve muscle tone. This helps blood move through the veins.

If we're overweight or obese, try to lose weight. This will improve blood flow and ease the pressure on the veins.

Avoid wearing tight clothes, especially those that are tight around the waist, groin (upper thighs), and legs. Tight clothes can make varicose veins worse.

Avoid wearing high heels for long periods. Lower heeled shoes can help tone the calf muscles. Toned muscles help blood move through the veins.

The doctor may recommend compression stockings. These stockings create gentle pressure up the leg. This pressure keeps blood from pooling and decreases swelling in the legs.

There are three types of compression stockings. One type is support pantyhose. These offer the least amount of pressure. A second type is over-the-counter compression hose. These stockings give a little more pressure than support pantyhose. Over-the-counter compression hose are sold in medical supply stores and pharmacies.

Prescription-strength compression hose are the third type of compression stockings. These stockings offer the greatest amount of pressure. They also are sold in medical supply stores and pharmacies. However, we need to be fitted for them in the store by a specially trained person.

Medical Procedures

Medical procedures are done either to remove varicose veins or to close them. Removing or closing varicose veins usually doesn't cause problems with blood flow because the blood starts moving through other veins.

We may be treated with one or more of the procedures described below. Common side effects right after most of these procedures include bruising, swelling, skin discoloration, and slight pain.

The side effects are most severe with vein stripping and ligation (li-GA-shun). Rarely, this procedure can cause severe pain, infections, blood clots, and scarring.

Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy (SKLER-o-ther-ah-pe) uses a liquid chemical to close off a varicose vein. The chemical is injected into the vein to cause irritation and scarring inside the vein. The irritation and scarring cause the vein to close off, and it fades away.

This procedure often is used to treat smaller varicose veins and spider veins. It can be done in the doctor's office, while we stand. We may need several treatments to completely close off a vein.

Treatments typically are done every 4 to 6 weeks. Following treatments, the legs will be wrapped in elastic bandaging to help with healing and decrease swelling.

Microsclerotherapy
Microsclerotherapy (MI-kro-SKLER-o-ther-ah-pe) is used to treat spider veins and other very small varicose veins.

A small amount of liquid chemical is injected into a vein using a very fine needle. The chemical scars the inner lining of the vein, causing it to close off.

Laser Surgery
This procedure applies light energy from a laser onto a varicose vein. The laser light makes the vein fade away.

Laser surgery mostly is used to treat smaller varicose veins. No cutting or injection of chemicals is involved.

Endovenous Ablation Therapy
Endovenous ablation (ab-LA-shun) therapy uses lasers or radiowaves to create heat to close off a varicose vein.

The doctor makes a tiny cut in the skin near the varicose vein. He or she then inserts a small tube called a catheter into the vein. A device at the tip of the tube heats up the inside of the vein and closes it off.

We'll be awake during this procedure, but the doctor will numb the area around the vein. We usually can go home the same day as the procedure.

Endoscopic Vein Surgery
For endoscopic (en-do-SKOP-ik) vein surgery, the doctor will make a small cut in the skin near a varicose vein. He or she then uses a tiny camera at the end of a thin tube to move through the vein. A surgical device at the end of the camera is used to close the vein.

Endoscopic vein surgery usually is used only in severe cases when varicose veins are causing skin ulcers (sores). After the procedure, we usually can return to the normal activities within a few weeks.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy
For ambulatory phlebectomy (fle-BEK-to-me), the doctor will make small cuts in the skin to remove small varicose veins. This procedure usually is done to remove the varicose veins closest to the surface of the skin.

We'll be awake during the procedure, but the doctor will numb the area around the vein. Usually, we can go home the same day that the procedure is done.

Vein Stripping and Ligation
Vein stripping and ligation typically is done only for severe cases of varicose veins. The procedure involves tying shut and removing the veins through small cuts in the skin.

We'll be given medicine to temporarily put we to sleep so we don't feel any pain during the procedure.

Vein stripping and ligation usually is done as an outpatient procedure. The recovery time from the procedure is about 1 to 4 weeks.

Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York Discusses That Public Knows Little About Varicose Veins

New York City and Long Island Vein Specialists With so many vein centers and vein clinics ‘popping up’, why have vein treatment from Schulman Vein and Laser Center

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2014 -- Varicose veins are common and many people recognize them when they see them, however few people know anything about the cause or treatment of this condition, doctors have said.

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that are found in the legs. They occur when the valves in the veins that carry blood from the legs towards the heart are no longer able to function - this causes blood to pool in the legs.

They often appear as rope-like cords that bulge out of the legs and around 40% of women and 25% of men are affected.

While some people experience little or no problems with them, others can experience pain, swelling, tiredness or a burning sensation. This often feels worse at the end of the day.

For some people, varicose veins are linked to serious health problems, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or wounds that will not heal.

People with a family history of varicose veins are much more likely to develop the condition. It is also thought that a diet high in fat and sugar and low in fibre may increase the risk.

"Varicose veins are very common but they can have serious health implications and effects on the sufferer's quality of life. In general we tend to see more women addressing the issue, but we would encourage men to get seen to also," commented Mr Peter Naughton, a consultant vascular surgeon at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin.

He pointed out that new treatments 'are less invasive and recovery times are significantly reduced, allowing patients to resume normal activity and work soon after surgery'.

The Bon Secours Hospital is holding a free and interactive educational seminar on varicose veins next month. Members of the public will be given information on how to avoid the condition, and on new non-invasive treatments that are available to treat it.

Those attending can also speak directly with a consultant vascular surgeon.

Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York Discusses Clearing the Skin's Road Maps

They may crawl up legs, redden the nose, or look like little “road maps” on parts of the body.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2014 -- They're veins, and there are a number of procedures that can zap the offending blue or red vessels into virtually nothing.

For varicose and spider veins, sclerotherapy is considered the gold standard of treatment. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy uses injections of foam or liquid solutions that collapse and close diseased veins.

Varicose veins are deformed, enlarged, superficial veins whose walls have stretched, causing blood flow to slow. Symptoms include pain, swelling, aching, burning, tingling, itching and leg restlessness. Cosmetically, legs appear bulgy and mapped with visible purple veins.

Spider veins are really just tiny varicose veins, red or blue in colour, and closer to the skin's surface.

Both men and women can develop varicose veins, and genetics, lifestyle, hormones and aging are major factors in their appearance.

Dr. Lily Wouters, a physician with Young & Wouters Calgary Vein and Laser, typically takes a medical history and does a full assessment of a patient's veins before proceeding with treatment.

"They may come in and are only concerned about a spider vein, but we assess in case there is a larger vein they don't notice. We diagnose and sit down to make a treatment plan. This varies depending on whether there are big veins or only small cosmetic ones. One person might need two treatments and another might need six," Wouters says.

She then gives a cost estimate and a time frame. If more than one sclerotherapy session is needed, the treatments are typically one month apart, but patients can see and feel the difference after just one visit, she says.

For smaller veins, Wouters also uses laser therapies that heat the insides of veins and shuts them down.

Sclerotherapy must be performed by medically trained practitioners, while laser treatments have less-stringent rules and can be performed at non-medical facilities such as spas. Wouters suggests lifestyle tweaks as a way to keep vein disorders at bay.

"I encourage exercise — walking. It doesn't have to be fancy. Keep to the ideal weight, and especially with a standing job, wear compression stockings, which I have on all the time," she says.

Varicose veins are progressive and can get worse over time, causing complications such as aching, fatigue, swelling, blood clots and ulcers.

At Vive Rejuvenation Laser Clinic, smaller cosmetic veins on the face and body are effectively eradicated using laser treatments, specifically the ND YAG wavelength laser, which can treat both lighter and darker skin tones.

It also treats superficial red and blue veins, telangiectasia, hemangiomas, port wine stains and spider veins.

"The advantage is no needle pokes, and the laser is only interested in the hemoglobin in the blood vessel, so it's not affecting the surrounding tissue," says Angela Robertshaw, managing director at Vive.

Smaller red and blue veins are heated up, coagulated, the walls of the vessel close in, and then the vein slowly breaks up and is reabsorbed by the body's system.

A topical anesthetic is usually used, and there can be some bruising and tenderness afterward, which clears quickly. Followup appointments are necessary to observe vein changes or to have additional treatments.

"Facial veins are very quick and easy to treat, and absorb quicker, because they are smaller," Robertshaw says.

Vive prices treatments based on how much time each procedure takes.

Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York is launching a new health campaign via social media about the importance of seeking vein disease treatment.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2014 -- Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York is launching a new public health campaign focusing on the importance of seeking vein disease treatment. According to the New York based vein clinic, vein care in NYC is often overlooked or considered merely a cosmetic issue. The center hopes to correct this misunderstanding and encourage the public to seek out treatment in a timely manner.

Dr. Martin L. Schulman M.D. and Dr. Lee G. Schulman M.D., a leading Manhattan vascular specialist at the Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York , encourages patients to understand the risks associated with vein disease. "The chronic form of vein disease known as venous insufficiency puts individuals at risk of serious complications, such as infection, bleeding, formation of trophic ulcers and even malignant lesions, thrombophlebitis and swelling. Prompt treatment helps patients to prevent these and other complications."

The NYC vein specialists are providing information on the importance of seeking vein treatment throughout the month of November. Information will be distributed through the center's social media outlets. Interested readers can learn more by visiting the center's Facebook and Twitter pages.
Varicose Vein Treatment Options
Varicose veins and spider veins are extremely common in men and women. While spider veins are very small, reddish veins on the surface of the skin, varicose veins are much larger, bulging, tangled veins that may appear bluish in color. Men and women suffer from varicose veins, although women are much more likely to have them.

Today, patients have access to a number of effective varicose vein treatment options. Advancements in technology and medicine have led to the development of safe, effective, minimally invasive treatment modalities that provide excellent, most importantly permanent results with no side-effects or downtime. Some of these modalities are foam- sclerotherapy and cryo-sclero, radio-frequency ablation, micro-phlebectomy, endovenous LASER obliteration and many others.

Schulman Vein and Laser Center New York Discusses Laser Treatment Best Option for Varicose Veins

When treating varicose veins, laser therapy remains the best option, a new study says.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/02/2014 -- Researchers in the study examined 798 participants who had varicose veins and were treated at 11 vascular surgery centers in the United Kingdom, between November 2008 and October 2012. The participants underwent one of three types of treatments: closing off the veins with a laser, injecting a drug "foam" into the vein or surgically removing the vein.

After six months, the researchers compared the outcomes, looking at how well the treatments worked and at their complication rates, as well as how the participants rated the change in their quality of life since their treatments.

"The main findings indicated that laser therapy was the preferred treatment for varicose veins," said study author Dr. Julie Brittenden, a professor in vascular surgery at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. "We found that all three treatments reduced symptoms associated with varicose veins, but there were fewer complications after laser treatment." [7 Beauty Trends That Are Bad for Your Health]

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are blood vessels that have become swollen, enlarged and twisted. Improperly working valves in the veins cause the disorder, Brittenden explained. In people who have this condition, blood returns up to the heart from the veins in the legs because of the contraction of the calf muscles, she said. Normally, valves in these veins prevent blood from flowing backwards, down towards the feet.

"People with varicose veins have leaky valves, which means that some blood flows backward and pools in the veins, causing them to become enlarged," she said.

The procedure called endovenous laser ablation, or laser therapy, uses heat generated by laser energy to seal off faulty blood vessels, diverting blood flow immediately to nearby healthy veins.

Foam treatment involves injecting drugs into a blood vessel. The medicines, when mixed with air, cause the vessel wall to thicken, which also helps to seal off blood flow. The recent study showed that foam was less likely than the other treatments to completely close a vein that had leaky valves, which may increase the likelihood that a patient will need future treatment, Brittenden said.

In the study, about 1 percent of patients who underwent treatment with a laser experienced complications such as lumpiness, skin staining and numbness. About 6 percent of those who received the foam treatment, and 7 percent of those who underwent surgery experienced such complications, according to the study.

The researchers also found that successful ablation of the great saphenous vein occurred in 83 percent of those who received the laser treatment and 84.4 percent of the participants who underwent surgery. These numbers were significantly higher than the 54.6 percent who had such successful ablation after the foam treatment. The great saphenous vein, the longest in the body, runs along the length of the leg.

The study appears in today's (September 24) issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Kevin McMullen, a vascular surgeon at Surgical Hospital of Oklahoma who was not involved with the study, said he agreed with Brittenden's conclusion. "Laser is preferred over surgery or foam due to higher success rates with the least amount of complications," he said.

Laser therapy works better than foam on larger veins, as the success rates for foam treatments worsens with increasing vein size, McMullen said. However, surgery may be the best choice for patients who have previously had vein procedures, or who have anatomical issues, such as veins that are very close to the skin or are larger than three-quarters of an inch (20 millimeters) in diameter, he said.

Can varicose veins be prevented?

Varicose vein treatment is not done just for cosmetic reasons, Brittenden said. "People with varicose veins often suffer from aches and discomfort," she told Live Science. "The condition can also cause swelling of the ankles, skin changes and sometimes ulcers."

Both men and women get varicose veins, she said. The condition is more common in pregnant women, older patients, overweight people and those who stand for long periods. It is also more prevalent in people who have a family history of varicose veins.

People can't prevent varicose veins from forming, but may be able to delay their formation or prevent existing varicose veins from getting worse, according to the National Institutes of Health. The NIH recommends that people avoid standing or sitting for a long time without taking breaks; avoid crossing their legs when sitting; and keep their legs raised when sitting, resting or sleeping.

Losing weight and doing exercise that works the leg muscles can also help, the NIH said.

Brittenden said that she and her team plan to follow the study participants for five years, as long-term results are important in determining longer-term costs and consequences of each of the treatments, such as recurrent varicose veins.
