The collapse occurred as workers were lowering the bridge into place at East Grand Boulevard when the jacking operation failed. Initially, the county Transportation Commission said 10 workers were injured, but revised that figure to nine. All of the injured workers were transported to local hospitals, where one was released and three remain in critical condition.

Assistance funds have been created and will be matched up to $5,000 per worker injured. All of the injured workers have the choice to sign up for the non-tax-deductible fund, Riverside County Transportation Commission executive director Anne Mayer said in an interview earlier this week.

The workers are also eligible for workers compensation, including medical care and disability benefits. There is no timeline for the investigations, but Mayer said past experience leads her to believe it could take up to six months. Jaime Duran suffered two broken legs after being beaten by deputies of the Kern County Sherriff’s Department, and Avrek Law Firm secured $1.25 million compensation for the victim.

Pamela King determined James Schultz, a 44 year old iron worker and Loren Branson a 44 year old tile worker, were entitled to $255,706.48 and $141,228.30 respectively after a single car collision that occurred on September 18, 2011 on Hinkley Road in the city of Barstow and the County of San Bernardino.

The portion of Hinkley Road contained a washed out bridge crossing over the Mojave River. In 2010, the bridge was damaged due to erosion caused by the current of the Mojave River.
