Florida Literacy Conference to Be Held in St. Petersburg May 9-11

Orlando, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/04/2012 -- The Florida Literacy Coalition (FLC) will be hosting the 28th Annual Florida Literacy Conference next week at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront.

The conference will kick off with keynote speaker Mawi Asgedom during the opening general session. As a child, Mawi fled civil war in Ethiopia and survived a Sudanese refugee camp for three years. After being resettled in The United States, he overcame poverty, language barriers and personal tragedy to graduate from Harvard University, where he gave the Commencement address to an audience of 30,000. Mawi will describe his own mother's struggle to learn English and rejuvenate attendees with his humorous and inspiring stories of the immigrant experience and the pivotal role played by community organizations. Mawi has written eight books that are used in thousands of classrooms across America, and has spoken to over 1,000,000 students and educators nationwide. He will also be offering a free session for Florida Guidance Counselors to introduce his leadership course launching through Florida Virtual School on June 1.

Another highlight to this week is the Florida Literacy Awards Banquet, sponsored by Southwest Airlines, held Thursday, May 10. This is our opportunity to highlight the accomplishments and recognize the outstanding achievements of a Florida adult learner, literacy practitioner, volunteer, literacy program, and business supporter. Dr. Gary Mormino, the banquet keynote speaker, holds the Frank E. Duckwall professorship in history at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, where he directs the Florida Studies Program.

The conference concludes Friday afternoon with closing remarks by award winning documentary filmmaker Sarah Entine. Originally diagnosed with dyslexia in 1978, Sarah only fully comprehended her disability 23 years later, at age 29. Her film, Read Me Differently, focuses on her experience growing up with misunderstood learning disabilities that spanned three generations in her family. An excerpt from the documentary will be shown.

FLC thanks the following conference sponsors that have helped to make this event possible: Florida Blue, Southwest Airlines, Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation, Publix Super Markets Charities, Florida TechNet, Dollar General, Knology, Pinellas Public Library Cooperative, Tampa Bay Times and the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Convention & Visitors Bureau. Please join us, and approximately 500 adult and family literacy practitioners, volunteers and adult learners next week to network, develop new skills and share promising practices during the 2012 Florida Literacy Conference.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and the Florida Literacy Coalition Award Health Literacy Grants

Orlando, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/27/2011 -- Eighteen Florida adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and family literacy programs were recently awarded one-year grants of up to $5,000 each to support the development of local health literacy programs.

The Florida Health Literacy Grant Initiative, funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida (BCBSF) and operated by the Florida Literacy Coalition (FLC), is a three-year project committing $360,000 to improving the health literacy level of Florida residents by supporting literacy programs with financial, professional development and technical support. This initiative combines ESOL instruction and health education in a multi-disciplinary approach that teaches English to adults and families while helping these individuals acquire skills and knowledge to make informed choices regarding their health and nutrition.

There is growing consensus among health care providers and adult educators nationwide that limited English language and literacy skills often has a significant impact on one's health. According to the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy, nearly nine out of 10 adults struggle with everyday health information that is routinely available in health care facilities, retail outlets, media outlets and communities.

"At BCBSF, we are committed to helping people and communities achieve better health," said Susan Towler, executive director, Community Affairs, BCBSF. "By partnering with the Florida Literacy Coalition and supporting the Florida Health Literacy Grant Initiative, we are reaching more and more Floridians every day and positively impacting their health and well-being."

In 2010, BCBSF and FLC awarded health literacy mini-grants to sixteen organizations. This year's funding reflects a combination of new grants and renewal grants, allowing current programs to continue and build upon their success.

"This initiative reflects Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida's outstanding commitment to helping adult learners develop the skills they need to be informed health advocates for themselves and their children," said Greg Smith, executive director of FLC. "The impact of this state initiative has been substantial with over 3,200 students served thus far. More importantly, what these individuals are learning is making a difference as they are exercising more, eating healthier, communicating more effectively with doctors and learning about affordable health care options."

The Florida Health Literacy Initiative is a partnership between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida (BCBSF) and the Florida Literacy Coalition (FLC). This Initiative works to provide health-education resources for local adults in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and family literacy programs so that students make informed choices about their health and nutrition. The cornerstone of this three-year statewide initiative is a mini-grants program that will award twenty grants of $5,000 each in May 2011.

Health literacy skills and health communication are a struggle for most people in the United States. Nearly 90 percent of English-speaking adults struggle to utilize health information available in health care facilities, retail outlets, the media and communities, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. Non-native speakers of English, adults over the age of 65, recent refugees and immigrants and people with less than a high school degree or GED, in particular, are more likely to experience limited health literacy.

People who lack health literacy skills are much more likely to take medications incorrectly, be hospitalized and spend more time in the hospital than people with higher health literacy. The potential for savings and better health are significant. Adult education, literacy and family literacy programs can play an important role in helping people to acquire these skills.

"We are so pleased with the positive outcomes in the first two years of our health literacy initiative," said Susan Towler, executive director, Community Affairs, BCBSF. "By partnering with the Florida Literacy Coalition and supporting this grant program, BCBSF is fulfilling its commitment of helping people and communities achieve better health."

Last year BCBSF and FLC were proud to award 16 organizations with health literacy mini-grants. The third year of funding will reflect a combination of new grants and renewal grants, allowing current programs to continue and build upon their ongoing efforts.

"More than 2,600 students and families were served by this program in its inaugural year, with student health literacy assessment scores improving by an average of 42 percent," said Greg Smith, executive director of FLC. "This initiative reflects Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida's outstanding commitment to helping adult learners develop the skills they need to be informed health advocates for themselves and their children."

The application and guidelines are available on the Florida Literacy Coalition's website at http://www.floridaliteracy.org.
Learning to Read Is Often Harder Than It Appears in Precious

Orlando, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/04/2010 -- With six Oscar nominations recently announced Precious, the movie based on the novel Push by Sapphire, is again in the headlines. However, Monica Baxley, an adult learner, wants people to know that learning to read can be much more difficult than it appears in Precious. Monica, who learned to read as an adult and then went on to get her GED, says, "Everybody learns at a different rate and it can take some people much longer to reach their goals."

Precious is the story of a teenager who faces insurmountable obstacles. Illiteracy, obesity, and two teen pregnancies are just a few of many. Precious is invited to enroll in an alternative school in the hope that her life can head in a new direction and with the help of her new teacher Miss Rain, Precious learns to read and write. Within a year, Precious improves her literacy skills to an 8th grade level, and the movie ends with Precious' decision to continue with her education making plans to take the GED.

Greg Smith, Executive Director of the Florida Literacy Coalition, "appreciates the message of hope conveyed in the movie. Literacy can and does open doors to a better life. That being said, it's important to know that it typically takes 100 hours of instruction to advance one grade level." Smith continued, "A movie like Precious will reach a lot of people and we want to make sure that adults and teens know that help is available. If they are willing to put in the time and effort, they too can achieve. "

In the movie, it was Precious's teacher who provided her with the support and guidance she needed to begin changing her life. Baxley stated, "Having a good relationship with your teacher can make all the difference. I was lucky to have a teacher who was someone I could talk to and someone who cared."

Becoming a literacy tutor is great ways to make an impact in the life of an individual.
The Florida Literacy Coalition Warns Against GED Scams

Orlando, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 12/09/2009 -- For today's 34 to 38 million adults in the US who never graduated from high school, passing the GED test is a pass key to both career and educational opportunities. That's because approximately 95 percent of employers and even more US colleges and universities accept the GED. Many websites offer fraudulent High School Diplomas and GED Credentials for exuberant prices, some exceeding $300.

Don't be taken in by such scams. It is important to know that one must test at an Official GED Testing Center, typically located at local schools or community colleges. Yet people are still spending hundreds of dollars on fast and easy programs that claim to provide a GED or high school diploma online. The reality is there is nothing fast or easy about the GED Exam. Developed by the GED Testing Service (GEDTS), it requires extensive preparation and it gauges comprehension of the standard high school curriculum.

Here are a few facts to keep in mind:

• Any services that claim to offer a GED credential through any means other than through a GEDTS approved GED Testing Center is not legitimate.
• GED is a proctored test and is never available to be taken on-line. A list of Official GED Testing Centers in Florida can be found on the Florida Literacy Coalition website.
• The services offered by these "diploma sites" are often costly, some exceeding $300. The Official GED Exam is offered for a cost that does not exceed $70.
• Beware of fake accreditation and websites that offer diplomas based on life and work experience.
• The so called diplomas offered by these sites are often not accepted by employers, colleges, universities or the military.

The efforts in creating awareness of GED scams have become great in recent years. Internet access has grown by 138% in
the United States since 2000, and with that growth, comes the opportunity for such scams.

Giving people correct information about where they can get a GED is the best way to reduce the amount of people being robbed of their money, and an opportunity to pursue an education. There are free or low cost GED instructional programs available in every county in Florida. For more information you can go online to the FLC's website and click on the "Get Your GED" section. You can also contact the referral hotline at 1-800-237-5113. The Florida Department of Education's GED website can be found at http://www.fldoe.org and you can contact the GED Testing Office toll free at 1-877-352-433.

Orlando, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/15/2009 -- According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, 30 million adults (14%) have below basic literacy skills. These individuals are unable to do even simple tasks such as filling out job application, using a telephone directory or reading to a child. In Florida the data is even more troubling, with an estimated 20% of adults having below basic skills.

To draw attention to this national crisis, the U.S. House of Representatives has designated October 18-23, 2009 as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week! This proclamation is intended to raise public awareness of adult education and family literacy, assist adult learners in need of literacy services, and support increased access to adult education and family literacy programs.

"People who lack functional literacy skills have been especially effected by the recession and are generally experiencing much higher rates of unemployment and poverty." said Greg Smith, Executive Director of the Florida Literacy Coalition, "Hopefully this act of Congress will elevate adult education and family literacy nationwide with policymakers, the media, and the community."

The National Coalition for Literacy has created a resource collection in the NCL Advocacy Clearinghouse and Toolkit (http://www.ncladvocacy.org), to support your efforts to raise awareness and celebrate the week. Resources include the latest fact sheets, sample press releases, and commemoration ideas for raising awareness for program directors, instructors, and partners.

Please join the U.S. House of Representatives, National Coalition for Literacy, and the Florida Literacy Coalition in honoring adult learners nationwide. Show your support for increasing adult education, ESL, and family literacy programs.

Adult education programs, along with family literacy programs, have, for many years, provided millions of Americans with the skills they need to lead productive lives, help their children succeed in school, and contribute to the civic life of our communities.

The Florida Literacy Coalition and local literacy programs have current and former students serving as literacy ambassadors available to share their stores of how their lives have been changed through adult education. Please contact the Florida Literacy Coalition for more information.

Orlando, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/03/2009 -- Governor Crist has issued a proclamation recognizing September 2009 as Florida Adult and Family Literacy Month.

More than 20 percent of Florida's adults experience literacy issues that severely impact their lives and families as well as their ability to work productively and fully participate as citizens and residents of our state.

The proclamation stresses the need for highly literate citizens and the importance of lifelong learning. It also recognizes the contributions of the broad range of adult education, literacy and family literacy providers serving more than 400,000 adults annually throughout the Sunshine State.

"We certainly appreciate Governor Crist's recognition of this important issue and the good work that is being done throughout the state to help adults and families develop functional reading, writing and English language skills" said Greg Smith, Executive Director of the Florida Literacy Coalition, "There is still much work to be done to assist thousands of Floridians to acquire the basic skills that so many of us take for granted; skills that are usually critical in securing sustainable employment and, as a parent, serving as your child's first and most important teacher."

Florida Literacy Coalition, Inc. to Apply Innovative IBM technology to Improving Statewide Literacy Efforts

Orlando, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/06/2009 -- Adults and families throughout the state will soon have access to new technology provided by IBM that can help adults and families improve their reading skills. The Florida Literacy Coalition, Inc. received a grant by IBM for the company's Reading Companion software which will be used by thirty-four Florida-based literacy programs, with a total in-kind value of $340,000.

Reading Companion uses speech-recognition technology that "listens" to emerging readers speak and provides individualized feedback, enabling them to practice their pronunciation as they acquire fundamental reading skills. This Web-based technology was developed by IBM research and aims to improve English literacy skills.

"The support of IBM enables programs throughout the state to employ breakthrough technology in the classroom, alongside traditional curriculum to help students achieve greater English literacy and language skills," said Greg Smith, Florida Literacy Coalition Executive Director. "We certainly appreciate IBM's generous support and commitment to literacy."

Programs benefiting from this technology grant comprise of community colleges, school districts, and non-profit literacy organizations (see attached list) located in twenty three counties throughout Florida. "Literacy is a key ingredient for students to be successful in school, perform in their jobs, and conduct their personal lives," said Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Affairs Manager, Janell Ray. "IBM is proud to be part of Florida Literacy Coalition's, programs helping our adults and families gain the literacy skills needed to become more productive in their lives and in our society."

The Reading Companion software is effective because it is simple to use. Readers wear a headset microphone connected to a computer, and then select an e-book from the virtual library. As they read the book aloud, the software "listens" to their pronunciation and accuracy, and provides them with immediate feedback (e.g. That was great!). If they have difficulty with the words, they are gently encouraged to try again or receive a correct reading. In addition, participants are given a special ID and password that makes Reading Companion available to them on the Web, enabling them to continue lessons wherever and whenever they can access a computer.

Reading Companion also provides teachers with statistical results on how the new reader is progressing. IBM also introduced the "Book Builder" feature, enabling anyone to become an author by creating an e-book that becomes part of the e-library for students to use around the world.

Reading Companion uses innovative speech-recognition technology developed by IBM researchers in partnership with teachers in IBM partner schools and not-for-profit organizations. It can be used in both primary schools as well as help adult learners to read. Currently, more than 700 schools and nonprofit organizations around the world are using Reading Companion in more than 27 countries.
