Bastian Solutions Explores Reasons to Utilize Conveyors or Carts for Material Transport

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/27/2016 -- Tim Brown, Bastian Solutions Senior Applications Engineer, recently discussed how businesses can evaluate whether a cart based or conveyor material delivery solution makes sense for an operation. The challenge of how to best move materials efficiently though the facility is something that keeps many operation managers scratching their heads. The evolution of material transport in most operations generally starts with operators carrying products by hand from point A to point B. At some point, the volume of product dictates the use of a cart to improve efficiency. Eventually, the debate shifts to utilizing non-powered carts and trucks or conveyors.

The determining factors to decide whether to utilize conveyor over carts include:

- High Volume / High Cost. As the number of movements within the facility increases so does the cost of these movements.

- Sequence / Error Reduction. Many operations require products to be kept in specific sequences as they move through the facility.

- Product Damage. When applied correctly, conveyors can greatly reduce product damage.

- Safety & Ergonomics. By nature, conveyors offer many advantages in terms of safety and ergonomics over cart transportation.

- Tight Space. Conveyors can greatly reduce the overall footprint of an operation.

Bastian Solutions Explores Benefits of Leasing Industrial Equipment

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/20/2016 -- Megan Hewitt-Ruzicka, Bastian Robotics Purchasing Specialist, discussed how interest rates, depreciation, down payments, and more can all be factors in whether to purchase or lease industrial equipment.

When it comes to procuring industrial equipment, manufacturers need to look at the best options for their company. Many businesses often seek to save as much money as possible when it comes to acquiring this type of equipment. Some businesses have available capital to invest in purchasing new equipment, while others prefer leasing. There are benefits to both buying and leasing industrial equipment, but the ultimate decision should be based on what is best for the particular business.

Many factors play a role in determining the best acquisition method. Good starting points to look at include:

- Interest rate and depreciation for buying
- Residual percent for leasing
- Down payments for both options

Ultimately, the decision whether to buy or lease industrial equipment is dependent upon the business' financial status and investment strategy. Generally, smaller start-up businesses would likely see that it makes sense to lease. Conversely, larger companies have the financial support to buy outright.

Bastian Solutions Purchasing Specialist Explores Benefits of Buying Versus Leasing Industrial Equipment

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/07/2016 -- Megan Hewitt-Ruzicka, Bastian Robotics Purchasing Specialist, discussed how interest rates, depreciation, down payments, and more can all be factors in whether to purchase or lease industrial equipment.

Bastian Solutions Shares Key Considerations when Opening New Distribution Center

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/01/2016 -- Jose Bejarano, a key Bastian Consulting member discussed some recommendations for selecting the best location for opening new distribution center. There are many factors that can affect the decision of where the facility should be, including: real estate cost, transportation cost, labor cost, access to quality labor, taxes, transportation routes, service level guarantees, and many others. All of these factors might have different levels of importance depending on overall supply chain strategy, but it is always good to keep each of them in mind throughout the entire decision-making process.

According to Bejarano, "Transportation cost is typically one of the most important factors when deciding where to place a new facility as it could be a large source of cost, and it will continue to affect the bottom line of the company for as long as the facility exists. A common way to reduce transportation cost is to reduce the distance between the new D.C. and the customers you will be shipping to, while also minimizing the distance between the D.C. and the suppliers from whom you will be receiving product. Meaning that if most of my shipments go out to the Northeast, I would want to be as close as possible to my clients but close enough to my suppliers in the Midwest to avoid additional transportation cost."

Bastian Solutions and Curriculum Associates Partner to Optimize Operations

Sandy Batista, Curriculum Associates Director of Customer Service and Warehouse Operations, noted, "We had certainly outgrown the facilities we had in the past. We were not able to handle the volume of orders we were receiving and if we hadn't moved into this facility, we would not have been able to fulfill orders on time. This new system allows us to guarantee products going out the door on time."

Rick McMorrow, VP of Information Technology, added, "In one month after opening the new facility, we processed 1,600,000 units which is approximately a million more that we had done prior. Bastian Consulting came in and listened to our requirements, evaluated our pain points in our current system, and discussed our goals to be able to handle the scale and automation we needed to move toward to continue to satisfy our customers. They were heavily involved in the design process."

Bastian Solutions Explores the Anatomy of Pneumatic Lift

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/18/2016 -- Robert Humphry, Bastian Solutions Applications Engineer, discussed how products may need to be transferred between elevations within a complex material handling system. The most commonly used piece of equipment for this elevation transfer is an elevator lift. For light duty applications such as totes and boxes, a pneumatic lift elevator is a very economical solution.

Humphry suggested that pneumatically actuated lift elevator is much less expensive when compared to other styles of lift elevators due to the minimal power transmission componentry required.

"A key factor to consider for a lift elevator is the length of travel. For short travel distances, a pneumatic lift is very inexpensive. For longer distances (8+ feet), an alternate style should be considered. This is partially due to the fact that the overall height of the elevator will be more than double the length of travel, and at that length, a pneumatic cylinder would be highly customized," added Humphry.

A pneumatic lift elevator uses a pneumatic cylinder to move product between elevations. The three major components of a pneumatic lift elevator are the frame, conveyor carriage and the machine guarding. The frame provides the basic structural integrity and guidance track for the carriage. The carriage typically features a conveyor and provides the method of transport from one elevation to another. The machine guarding eliminates pinch points and provides a safe barrier around the equipment.

Bastian Solutions New ZiPline Conveyor Handles Documents and Paper Stacks

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/17/2016 -- Adam Janeira, Multimedia Specialist with Bastian Solutions, discussed the challenges of moving paper on conveyors. More conventional solutions introduce sticks of belted, slider bed AC conveyors. This option is affordable and can fit seamlessly into an automated process. Without complex controls however, the simple conveyor will provide exactly what it is designed for, simple conveyance.

Janeira noted, This means that there is no ability to accumulate the stacks of product, no ability to mitigate the flow of the product, and no option to ramp up or slow down speeds to ensure the top of the stack does not topple on start up or when stopping. AC belted conveyors typically require large diameter end pulleys to support the tension of the belt. This may seem like an unrelated fact, but a large diameter end pulley means a larger transition between connecting equipment which can spell trouble for paper."

Bastian Solutions has created a DC powered, zero pressure, plug-and-play style, belted slider bed conveyor that does just that. By utilizing DC brushless motors, the distinct zones create zero pressure accumulation with controllable acceleration and deceleration profiles. The use of slider beds keeps the stacks of paper on a flat, level surface to assure consistent conveyance. After multiple prototypes and iterative designs, we were able to create tight enough transitions between the zones to capture all the pros of the simple, AC bed, without any of the cons.

Bastian Solutions 2016 Outstanding Young Professional Award Winner Speaks to Modern Materials Handing

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/12/2016 -- Bob Trebilcock, Modern Materials Handling magazine's Executive Editor recently spoke with Greg Conner, Bastian Solutions' Indiana Regional Director. Last month, Modern Materials Handling featured MHI's Young Professional Network (YPN) and Conner was the winner of the 2015 Outstanding Young Professional Award.

Conner spoke about what attracted him to the industry. "It was a complete coincidence, and I think that is one of the biggest challenges we have when it comes to getting new folks involved in our industry. There really isn't an awareness. For instance, you really don't get much exposure to materials handling in college unless you happen to take the right class or get an internship. My introduction was through the job interview process. I went to college in Indiana at Purdue, and when I was looking for a job, I found this company that was doing things with automation and robots. I'm not sure I knew that they were doing it in warehouses, but what they were doing sounded cool, so I interviewed with them. And when I learned more at the job interview, it was cool. But back then, in 2005, if you went to a company's Website, you didn't see videos and case studies. That's the void that YPN can fill. It provides a lot of information about the industry to young professionals who might not know about the industry," noted Connor.

Bastian Solutions Explores Benefits of Buying Versus Leasing Industrial Equipment

Bastian Solutions Explores Benefits of Buying Versus Leasing Industrial Equipment

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/09/2016 -- Megan Hewitt-Ruzicka, Bastian Robotics Purchasing Specialist, discussed how interest rates, depreciation, down payments, and more can all be factors in whether to purchase or lease industrial equipment.

Bastian Solutions ExactaBev Offers Best in Class Order Fulfillment Software for Beverage Distributors

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/06/2016 -- Bastian Solutions introduced a new beverage warehouse execution system, ExactaBev: the beverage software suite. The new web-based software suite offers best-in-class order fulfillment software specifically designed to serve beverage distributors.

"Three key features of the software stand out to me," stated Damir Kantardzic, President of Bastian Software Solutions. "First, ExactaBev offers a web-based portal, which provides route-waving tools that are flexible, rules-driven, and easy to use. The software also organizes order picking into waves of work that maximize picker efficiency. Additionally, the rich graphical displays let users visualize the work to be done and the labor required in each area of the warehouse."

ExactaBev provides a host of tools for beverage distributors to maximize operations. These features include predictive analysis to accurately estimate when routes will be completed; robust and user-friendly web interface to help operators research and resolve exceptions; automated integration with conveyor systems to drive accuracy, speed, and sorting so every route is correctly loaded for shipment; a Business Intelligence suite for complete visibility and reporting to analyze real-time and historical data.

Bastian Solutions New Robotic Document Inserter Robot Cell to Expect Uptime Approaching 99 Percent

Bastian Solutions New Robotic Document Inserter Robot Cell to Expect Uptime Approaching 99 Percent

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/04/2016 -- Bastian Solutions, a global material handling systems integrator, introduced its robotic document inserter, a robot cell that prints and inserts pack slips, promotional material, and other documents into shipping cartons.

"Our ultimate goal in designing this robotic cell was reliability and system up time," stated Geoff Schreiber, Robotics Engineering Manager at Bastian Solutions. "Traditional document inserters use belts and sensors that often require daily maintenance. With our robotic inserting system, the effects from paper dust, facility humidity, and paper quality do not negatively impact performance. As typical with robotic systems, our customers should expect up time approaching 99%.

The robotic document inserter allows standard robotic technology to interface directly with industrial printers, removing any chance of mishandling. In addition, the system interfaces directly with warehouse control systems, removing all third-party software and allowing a single interface and one line of support for the life of the system. Full system performance diagnostics are incorporated within the existing control system for complete visibility to system data and statistics.

Modern Materials Handling Magazine Talks to Regional Director of Bastian Solutions

Modern Materials Handling Magazine Talks to Regional Director of Bastian Solutions

Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/03/2016 -- Bob Trebilcock, Modern Materials Handling magazine's Executive Editor recently spoke with Greg Conner, Bastian Solutions' Indiana Regional Director.
