South Cowichan Eyecare Brings Cutting Edge Tech to Cobble Hill

New Keratograph Technology Represents Revolution In Disease Detection

Cobble Hill, BC -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/31/2015 -- South Cowichan Eyecare, a local Cobble Hill eye care practice with a reputation for tech focused, customer centered approach to eyecare, proudly introduces the latest addition to their practice, Keratograph technology.

Commenting on the new technology, Dr. Trevor Miranda, one of the foremost doctors at South Cowichan Eyecare, says, "In an effort to deliver a world class eye care experience to our patients, we have consistently committed ourselves to investing in the latest technology. The Keratograph is an exciting new instrument that provides a look into the future of the health of your eyes, utilizing multiple functions to allow us to diagnose a number of diseases in the absence of obvious symptoms. It is a very comfortable, convenient and accurate test, which is completely non-invasive and requires only 10 minutes for testing."

The Keratograph is particularly important in the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye disease. Tests such as how quickly your tears evaporate, unevenness in the cornea and the state of some of the glands associated with tear production allow our doctors to diagnose and monitor dry eye disease. Whereas, in the past, monitoring was based solely on the patient's symptoms, the new Keratograph allows for monitoring of signs of disease progression, which aids in monitoring and treatment.

Using the corneal topography function, the Keratograph is also able to give an in depth analysis of the "hills and valleys" of a patient's cornea. This is important in diagnosing certain corneal diseases such as keratoconus, in which early diagnosis is key in allowing for surgical intervention and slowing down progression. It is also important for optimizing contact lens fitting for patients with high or irregular astigmatism.

Dry eye patients, contact lens patients and patients undergoing cataract surgery are all recommended for testing using South Cowichan's new Keratograph.

Trouble with Blepharitis? South Cowichan Eyecare Has Got You Covered

Local Optometric Practice Introduces Innovative New Blephex Blepharitis Treatment

Cobble Hill, BC -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/09/2015 -- South Cowichan Eyecare, a local Optometric practice constantly at the forefront of patient care innovations, has recently introduced the latest technology in its effort to further protect their patients' sight: Blephex.

This amazing technology is used to treat Blepharitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the eyelids which is caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria that live along the eyelid margin. Blepharitis can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender, but generally becomes more prevalent as a person gets older since tears usually contain less antibodies with age. "As this bacteria grows out of control, it begins to produce a biofilm that traps debris along the eyelashes," explains Dr. Trevor T. Miranda, "Bacterial toxins then become trapped and begin to penetrate the eyelid and cause it to swell, leading to possible damage to your tear glands and impacting tear production. Less tears with even less antibodies allow this bacteria to continue to grow, creating a vicious cycle which quickly spirals out of control if not dealt with. The BlephEx tool works by spinning a medical grade micro-sponge along the eyelid surface, eliminating scruff & bacterial debris that builds up along the lid and base of the eyelashes, removing bacteria and destroying the environment it thrives in."

Discussing the patient benefits of Blephex, Dr. Miranda notes, "Patients are excited that there is a new treatment. Many eye care professionals have not addressed this disease in the past or they have simply masked the symptoms with drops. Finally there is a treatment that can eliminate or reduce the causes of blepharitis & improve the health of the eyelid by cleaning up the lids. This causes the patient to have less redness/irritation. Because they can see and feel the difference, patients are often better at keeping up with their lid hygiene at home. This is particularly helpful with demodex infestations as it helps to break down the collarettes on the lashes which are difficult to treat with regular home treatment. In terms of how it feels to patients, the patient experience seems to differ, although most people report a mild tickling sensation"
