Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/04/2015 -- The IAM has voiced concerns over the growing amount of technology found within new vehicles and how this impacts driver concentration levels and safety.

Each new generation of cars introduces fresh technologies both under the bonnet and in the cabin to make motoring more efficient, convenient and entertaining. And many recent models come with an array of interior distractions, from sat nav systems to smartphone connectivity.

However, while these features may be seen as beneficial to drivers, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued an appeal to the government to take action to ensure that this technological evolution of vehicles does not lead to safety risks.

IAM chief exec Sarah Sillars identified the need for the introduction of American-style regulations over the kinds of distractions that can legally be included within reach of drivers. She made the argument that no piece of tech should cause the driver to take their eyes off the road for over two seconds at a time, which may mean that manufacturers will be less able to include certain features in the future.

Smartphone synchronisation is a particular worry, since modern cars which can join forces with portable handsets to access entertainment and connectivity capabilities are also more likely to lead to people fiddling with settings and changing tracks while they are behind the wheel and their attention should be elsewhere.

Sillars said that more research needs to be done in order to formulate safety guidelines that can better govern in-car gadgetry. And the new government which is formed after the general election in May should make this a priority, according to the IAM.

Aberdeen, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/11/2015 -- People looking to buy used cars are set to get access to more attractive finance packages as the market adapts to flourishing new-car sales.

Although the auto industry was put in a tough spot following the financial crisis in 2008, sales of new cars have grown significantly in recent years, largely thanks to the availability of personal contract purchase (PCP) financing packages.

In many cases, this has meant that buyers are compelled to choose a new car rather than a second-hand model because the finance packages have been more favourable. But now PCP deals are starting to penetrate the used market and will make things better for buyers and dealerships alike, according to analysts at CAP Automotive.

Dealers have found that PCP deals on new vehicles have put them in a difficult position when selling second-hand cars, forcing them to discount used models significantly in order to make them competitive and thus reduce the amount of profit that can be made on each sale.

Now the plan is to make PCP financing a widely available option to buyers investing in used cars, meaning that deposits will be low or non-existent in some instances, while monthly repayment rates will be affordable.

Industry expert Robert Hester explained that PCP has the added benefit of building brand loyalty in buyers and even encouraging them to return to the same dealership again once their initial contract has expired. This could help to stimulate the used market further and give consumers and dealers a reason to be confident.
