Buyer Behaviour Study by GfK1 Shows That UK Car Buyers Not Clear on What They Want

Stevenage, Hertfordshire -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/06/2015 -- The latest Auto Trader's Buyer Behaviour Study by GfK1 has shown that most UK car buyers have no clear idea of which vehicle they are going to buy when they go shopping for a vehicle.

The results of the latest survey were extremely revealing. Nearly half of those who researched their next vehicle still went to the forecourt with no clear idea of which make or model they would buy.

This was especially the case with women and young children. Overall 48% of buyers had no idea of which vehicle they would actually buy.

Just over 32% of women had not decided which vehicle they would buy by the time they turn up on a car dealers forecourt. Young people were even more likely to be undecided, 36% of those aged between 17 and 24 were not sure of which vehicle to buy. For those aged over 45 that figure was just 25%.

Auto Trader is one of the UK's biggest sources for both new and used car research. Millions turn to the site to research their next vehicle purchase and find places to buy.

This is the second time Auto Trader has published this survey, which looks at how new and used car buyers behave. The 2015 study specifically looked at how UK car buyers research their purchase and make the final purchasing decision. The results of the survey showed that most people carry out the majority of the research that they do online.

During the research phase, most consumers visit several dealer websites, but only visit one garage forecourt. They are using the web to decide who they buy from, but it is the dealer that helps buyers to decide which vehicle they buy. In other words, those looking for used cars for sale in Stevenage are very likely to know who they are going to buy from, but have no idea of what they will buy when they arrive on the forecourt. This survey underlines the importance of having a good web presence and impressing the consumer online as well as on the forecourt.

BCA Report Highlights Challenging Trading Conditions for Used Car Dealers

A recent report by the British Car Auctions (BCA) showed that sales of used cars were buoyant, but that many used car dealers made less profit.

Stevenage, Hertfordshire -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/07/2015 -- During 2014, sales of used cars were up in all areas of the UK, but profits were down in most areas. The number of used cars for sale in Hertfordshire and other parts of the South East were definitely higher in 2014, and most of those cars were successfully sold. Yet despite increased sales, more used car dealers struggled to make a profit in 2014.

Weekly profits in London and the South East did grow. In London, the average weekly earnings were up to £692 a week, in the South East profits averaged out at £638 per week.

Across the rest of the UK sales rose, but weekly earnings fell. This turned 2014 into a challenging year for many of the UK's used car dealers.

However, there is good news too. Other reports compiled by the BCA, WhatCar and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders all indicate that 2015 will be another good year for both used and new car sales in the UK. They all anticipate that more units will be moved, so sales will be made in 2015 than 2014. This means that falling per unit profits can potentially be offset by increased turnover.

However, not everyone in the industry agrees that sales will grow by enough. Some industry specialists believe that the UK car market is more volatile than it used to be, so sales could just as easily fall rather than rise during 2015.

Only time will tell who is right. Those who are confident about future growth in the industry point to the fact that many UK consumers have not replaced their car since the recession started in 2008. Instead, they have hung onto their old cars in an effort to save money. Those who foresee continued growth point out that many of these cars are reaching the point where they cannot be safely kept on the road, so many car owners will have little choice but to replace them. A fact that will help to drive sales in 2015.

Experian and the DVLA Says, Demand for Used Cars in 2014 Grows at a Record Pace

The latest used car sales data from Experian and the DVLA shows that people in the UK are once again buying cars.

Stevenage, Hertfordshire -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/16/2015 -- After years of difficult trading conditions, used car dealers have been able to breathe a sigh of relief. The latest sales figures indicate that for them the recession is over.

When the recession struck in 2008 sales of both used and new cars in the UK slumped. Prior to the recession the sale of used cars in the UK were running at around 1.92 million units per quarter. Once the recession took a hold, sales slumped to below 1.5 million units per quarter.

In 2013, things were better with 1.82 million cars being sold, but that was still at pre-recession levels. For the last quarter of 2014, 1.92 million used cars were sold across the UK.

Currently there are plenty of used cars for sale in Stevenage and the surrounding area, but with sales as strong as they are many dealers in the area have fewer used cars to offer their clients. Overflowing forecourts are definitely a thing of the past. Fortunately, most people who are looking for a used car in the UK want to buy a vehicle that is less than three years old. The sales of new cars have taken off over the past few years and many of these vehicles are now re-entering the market as used cars. This means that used car forecourts are being re-stocked at a faster rate than they were, so there is no real danger of used car dealers not being able to find clients the car they really want.

There is also growth within the fleet car market. In 2014, new car registrations for the fleet sector rose by 9.3% year on year.

This increased demand for both new and used vehicles is being driven by the fact that many feel that the corner has been turned and that the UK is now coming out of recession. Falling fuel and food prices mean that UK consumers have more money available than they did. The same is true for businesses. Add in the fact that both groups now have easier access to low cost finance and it is easy to see why the sale of new and used cars is rising.
