BMW has built its two-millionth 1 Series as it prepares to launch a new model.

Edinburgh, Midlothian -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/16/2015 -- It's hard to believe that BMW's entry-level 1 Series was launched as long ago as 2004. Offering buyers BMW's hallmark rear-wheel-drive handling in a smaller package with hatchback practicality, it proved a hit with buyers.

So successful has it been that BMW has now produced its two-millionth version of the car - a 120i destined for a Japanese customer. It's an even more impressive achievement when you consider that the coupes and convertibles that were originally part of the 1 Series range have since been spun off to become the 2 Series.

The milestone also marks the introduction of a revised 1 Series range which will go on sale in the UK this spring. It will be available in three- and five-door variants and features new front and rear styling as well as a host of other improvements.

Diesel models share the three-cylinder engine from the latest Mini, and even the entry-level 116d has a six-speed gearbox as standard. An eight-speed automatic will also be offered across the range with revised hardware and software for maximum efficiency.

Inside there's a piano black centre console with chrome highlights to air vents and radio. All 1 Series models will have single-zone climate control as standard, with dual-zone as an option. Options on offer include a self-parking system and full LED headlights.
