Local dental professional helps to dispel common misnomers and myths around misunderstood dental procedure

Santa Rosa, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/19/2015 -- Santa Rosa Endodontics joins the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) in supporting Root Canal Awareness Week March 22 - 28, 2015. This year marks the ninth annual effort to increase public awareness and knowledge of the facts about root canals.

Increased training and better tools for root canal treatment helps save diseased and injured teeth without the agony portrayed in movies about the Old West and the early 1900s. Root Canal Awareness Week will show the general public and referring dentists how root canals have improved over the years.

Endodontics is a specialty field requiring an additional 2-3 years of training after earning a dental degree. It focuses on study and treatment of the dental pulp located within the tooth and its roots. Root canal therapy is often required by patients who tend to put it off until the pain causes them to book an appointment.

Emine C. Loxley, DMD and owner of Santa Rosa Endodontics, notes that a recent AAE survey indicated 56 percent of respondents stated "root canal treatment makes them anxious". The same survey indicated 78 percent preferred having a root canal over losing a permanent tooth. The numbers are not good enough. The goal of this year's Root Canal Awareness Week is to spread the word that root canals actually relieve pain, rather than cause it.

Dr. Loxley received a specialty certificate in Endodontics at the U.S. Army's Tengay Dental Clinic and the Medical College of Georgia. She relocated to Santa Rosa to start a new practice after nearly 10 years of endodontics work in Bend, Oregon. Her mission as a member of the AAE is to spread the word to the general public that root canals relieve pain and restore healthy teeth.
