Alex Tsakiris of Skeptiko Interviews Theoretical Physicist Dr. Lawrence Krauss About Whether Reincarnation Is Nonsense and Why the Dalai Lama Should Step Down

Join Skeptiko host Alex Tsakiris for an interview with Dr. Lawrence Krauss, author of A Universe From Nothing. During the interview Professor Krauss discusses his film “The Unbelievers”, and his call for the Dalai Lama to resign

Del Mar, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/01/2015 -- One of the many aspects [of Buddhism] that is completely ridiculous is [this person] who claims to be a reasonable man, and tries to be in accord with science, the Dalai Lama. His whole position is based on something that is absolutely ridiculous. If [he] really believed in what he said; if he really put his money where his mouth is, he would resign as Dalai Lama because the Dalai Lama is based on reincarnation which is just nonsense.

Alex Tsakiris: I don't know if it's just nonsense.

Lawrence Krauss: It is nonsense.

Alex Tsakiris: But I just talked to Jim Tucker, respected psychologist in the department of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Virginia. They've done extensive work published in the best journals in their field, and they offer the only explanation for what they found in terms of reincarnation... I think you would really have to tell me specifically what is wrong with--back to science--what's wrong with the scientific method they've employed?

Alex Tsakiris of Skeptiko Interviews Dr. Michael Shermer About His Skepticism of Near-Death Experience Science

Del Mar, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/30/2015 -- Join Skeptiko host Alex Tsakiris for an interview with Dr. Michael Shermer, founder of Skeptic magazine, and author ofThe Moral Arc. During the interview Dr. Shermer discusses how his interpretation of a peer-reviewed near-death experience research paper outraged the researcher:

Alex Tsakiris: In the article you cited [Dr. Pim van Lommel's] work and you said his research "delivered a blow to the idea that the mind and the brain could be separate." Do you remember this whole thing?

Dr. Michael Shermer: Yes, of course and he wrote me and said, "I disagree. That is not what [the original] research means…" So we agreed to disagree. That's how I read it.

Alex Tsakiris: But how can you "agree to disagree"? If you said his methods were wrong or that his conclusions were faulty, but what you did…

Dr. Michael Shermer: It's not in the methods it's in the interpretation of what [his research] means…
Alex Tsakiris: … but that's his research…

Dr. Michael Shermer: … and I am skeptical of some of the methods of how they interpret experiences that people report having.

Alex Tsakiris: …but I think this gets at the issue a lot of people have with the skeptical/atheist community…it feels like there's this pattern of disinformation/misinformation… when a guy reports research [findings] you can either say, I agree with the research, or I disagree… but you can't say the research says [something different than what the researchers concluded]."

Alex Tsakiris of Skeptiko Interviews Harvard-Trained Social Scientist Dr. Jeffery Martin About Whether Enlightenment Can Be Taught

Del Mar, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2015 -- Join Skeptiko host Alex Tsakiris for an interview with Harvard-trained social scientist Dr. Jeffery Martin. During the interview Martin discusses the goals of his research on transformational states:

Alex Tsakiris: Dr. Martin, what's your goal in this? I hear you talking about engaging video game makers and other culture makers and I just scratch my head and go, really? Is that where we're going with this? Or you talk about, equally kind of hard for me to grasp is you talk about engaging religious leaders which–in what way? To kind of tell them you're wrong again? What is your goal in some of that culture making and culture war kind of stuff?

Dr. Jeffrey Martin: I think from our standpoint, you know, we've got a lot of data around a very different sort of sense of self than is traditionally researched and is prevalent in society today. So a question for us is, you know, how do we get that information out in meaningful ways that are able to significantly impact people's lives? Because it does seem quite beneficial. I don't think you release something that produces a permanent shift in someone without releasing the undo button for it right? I mean we're not advocates that like everybody should want this and everybody should experience this and this should just be enforced from on high you know, by the powers that be or should be subliminally put into you know media or whatever else but it's certainly…it's certainly hard for anyone in our position seeing the data that we've seen over these years to say that it shouldn't be widely and more reliably available.
