Ford used the Geneva Motor Show to announce a range of styling, driving and equipment changes to its EcoSport model. The practical and economical EcoSport was launched in the UK in 2013 and this is its first major revision.

It will be available without a rear-mounted spare wheel for the first time and interior revisions include a restyled instrument panel with a chrome surround and a relocated easier-to-reach handbrake. It is driving where the changes will be noticed most though. The new EcoSport has retuned suspension with a 10mm lower ride height and changes to electronic stability control and power steering systems.

Diesel and EcoBoost engines are the same as before but updated to the latest emissions standards and noise levels have been cut thanks to better soundproofing and tighter pedal seals. A winter pack will be offered which includes a heated windscreen and mirrors and heated front seats. Later this year built-in sat-nav and a reversing camera will be available too.

There will also be an EcoSport S model for the first time featuring 17-inch alloy wheels, a sporty rear diffuser and privacy glass.

There were seven cars in the final shortlist for the awards, narrowed down from 31 original candidates. The winners are decided by a 58-strong judging panel made up of respected European motoring journalists. The competition is open to new cars that have gone on sale within the last twelve months.

Judges choose winners based upon a number of criteria, including comfort, design, driver satisfaction, economy, functionality, handing, performance, price, safety, technical innovation and value for money.

Volkswagen has dominated the Car of the Year awards over the last few years, with the VW Polo taking the prize in 2010 and the VW Golf named as 2013's winner. In traditional style, the winners were announced ahead of the opening of the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. Votes are added up to find one overall winner rather than allotted to different categories.
