Autorola Says, the Average Price Paid for a Used Car in the UK Has Risen in 2015

The average amount that UK consumers paid for their used cars rose during the first quarter of 2015.

Inverness-Shire, Scotland -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/24/2015 -- Autorola, who is the UK's biggest remarketing portal, released the figures at the start of April. Their research showed that during Q1 of 2015, the average price of a used car went up from £8,484 to £8,624.This £140 increase is an important one for an industry that has been struggling to make a profit for several years. For the past five years the amount of profit made on each sale has been falling, so any increase in the average price paid is important.

There are several reasons why UK consumers are now prepared to pay more when they buy a used car. The first factor is the fact that UK consumers are feeling better off. They can see that the economy is recovering and many people have more spare cash available because of falling fuel and food prices.

People are feeling more financially secure, which means they feel confident enough to go out and make big purchases. This increase in demand is allowing used car dealers to secure a better price for the cars that they sell.

In addition, buyers of used cars are looking for slightly younger cars. During the recession, people were buying slightly older vehicles than they are now. The vast majority of the used cars for sale in Inverness dealer showrooms and in other parts of the UK are nowunder 4 years old. Most consumers are trying to buy a three-year-old vehicle, last year they wanted older, cheaper vehicles. Today, they are prepared to spend a bit more and buy a younger vehicle.

It is not yet clear whether the average price paid for used cars in the UK will continue to rise, but demand for used cars in general is expected to be high during 2015. Easier access to finance for used cars will also play a role and help more people to buy than in the past. Given the fact that increasing demand normally results in higher prices it seems likely that the average amount paid for a used car in the UK will continue to rise steadily during 2015.

DVSA Says, More Driving Tests Being Taken in the UK

Inverness, Scotland -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/25/2015 -- Statistics released by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in March show that more driving tests are being taken in the UK than over the same period for 2013.

The latest statistics cover the period between October and December of 2014. During that time,393,025 practical driving tests were taken. This total includes all types of tests, that is to say car, bike, LGV and PCV tests. The number of tests taken represents an increase of 3.1% across the board than for the same time during 2013.

Of those nearly 400,000 driving tests, the vast majority were car tests, 90% to be exact. The number of practical car driving tests has risen by 5.1%, whilst the number of theory tests taken has risen by 7.9% over the same time.

In theory more driving tests translates into more drivers and, therefore, more car sales, and there is no doubt that there is some correlation between the two figures. Comparing historical pass data with car sales demonstrates the connection between the number of people taking their driving test and the level of car sales. However, despite the fact that the number of practical tests taken is up by 5.1% the pass rate has only gone up by 3.1% meaning that whilst more people are taking the test more people are failing.

This data means that the majority of cars for sale in Inverness, and much of the rest of the UK, will continue to be bought by older drivers rather than new drivers. However, it does appear that young people are prioritising taking their test and getting their driver's licence more that they once did. Many see having a licence as key to getting a job and having the flexibility to study where they can get the best education.

For the sellers of used cars the fact that more young people will potentially be entering the market is welcome news. As the average age of the population increases, their customer base is set to fall as people in their late 70s, 80s and 90s give up their licences. The DVSA believe that the upturn in the economy has also helped more people to be able to afford the lessons and tests fees, which has fed demand.
