Types of Forging for API Wellhead Component Manufacturing – Tip Sheet

Forged Components, Inc. releases a tip sheet describing the types of forging that can be used for API Wellhead Component Manufacturing

Humble, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/21/2017 -- Forging methods are an important consideration when making any wellhead or pressure vessel component. Here are five common forging methods for API wellhead component manufacturing:

Open Die Forging

In open die forging, metal is compressed but not constrained between two flat die with no pre-cut profiles. Open die forging is a very versatile method and can be used with nearly all forgeable alloys. It is often used for large parts weighing over 200,000 pounds.

Seamless Rolled Ring Forging

To craft forged steel rings or other seamless rolled rings, manufacturers use open die forging to punch a hole in a circular piece of metal, creating a doughnut shape. The metal "doughnut" is then heated and placed on a roller to shape and expand the ring.

Impression Die Forging

Impression die forging, also called closed die forging, uses a die with cavities to compress the part and restrict metal flow, forcing the metal into a particular shape. Impression die forging can create very detailed parts in symmetrical and nonsymmetrical shapes.

Cold Forging

Cold forging is a variety of impression die forging that uses temperatures between room temperature and several hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Manufacturers may use cold bending, cold drawing, coining, or extruding to create a range of shapes. Cold forging is especially useful when making shaft- or cup-shaped parts or bent configurations that weigh less than 10 pounds.

Precision Forging

Another type of impression die forging is precision forging. In precision forging, material is carefully measured so that little or no metal overflows out of the die during the forging process. Precision forging can create highly detailed parts with thin sections that require little or no finishing.

Forged Components, Inc. Presents Blog Series Looking at Wellhead Components

FCI presents multi-part blog series describing the components of a wellhead for an oil or gas well and what they do.

Humble, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/22/2017 -- FCI is one of the top wellhead component suppliers in the country, but what are the components of a wellhead and what do they do? This series of blog posts will explain these components and how they work within the wellhead itself.

The wellhead is the part of an oil or gas well that is above ground. It is the interface between the equipment in the hole and the production control equipment on the surface. It helps provide the structure and pressure and serves as the suspension point for the casing strings within the wellbore as well as maintains the pressure within them.

Casing Strings – These are pipes that run through a particular drilling zone and serve to protect the area outside of the pipe, such as a fresh water zone, from contamination. They serve to seal the outside areas from the wellbore in order to prevent cave-ins, manage areas with different pressures, and seal high pressure zones from the surface.

Wellhead Casing or Casing Head - Are the lowest part of the wellhead assembly where the casing string can be set and sealed. It also seals off the inside of the casing from the external environment.

Blowout Preventer – This component maintains the surface pressure during the drilling process. Because drilling often causes extreme changes in pressure within a well reservoir, blowout preventers are designed to regulate the pressure within the wellbore and, in some cases, kill or seal the well to prevent a catastrophic "blow-out." Blowouts may eject tubing, equipment, etc. explosively out of the hole cause tremendous damage and casualties.

Forged Components Launches Tip Sheet for Choosing Forged Flanges with Marketing Advantages

Texas-based company specializing in connections for ASME pressure vessels looks at advantages of seamless integrally reinforced forged connections versus multi-component fabrication.

Humble, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/01/2016 -- Forged Components, Inc. (FCI), a global leader in the forging, machining and manufacture of integral self-reinforced connections for ASME pressure vessels, has announced the launch of its tip sheet for choosing forged flanges that have marketing advantages. The document focuses on the advantages of seamless integrally reinforced forged connections versus multi-component fabrication, with Forged Components representatives stressing to quality-conscious customers that integrally reinforced forged connections boast improved strength, as the connection is forged close to the finished profile.

According to the tip sheet, FCI's industrial flanges simplify shop fabrication by eliminating pad fabrication reinforcement, nozzle neck fabrication, component fabrication, pad installation reinforcement, inspection and testing, handling of associated components to and from the various work stations and inspection and marking of component material (identification/traceability).

Improved quality control comes in the form of reduced component and shop fabrication inspection, allowing quality control inspectors to direct their efforts to other more demanding or critical areas of concern. Further, in lighter duty applications, the use of long weld necks eliminates/reduces the possibility of barrel distortion that can occur in pipe necks due to heat input from welding.

Production cost reduction advantages as outlined by Forged Components' tip sheet for choosing integrally-reinforced forged connections include material requisitioning, purchasing and expediting of one part as compared to three parts (pipe, flange and plate), material handling of only one part into stock and then directly into the final assembly of the work inventory control of fewer parts, quality control improvement in the areas of traceability, inspection, testing and documentation and reduction of fabrication schedule, thus improving the purchaser's deliveries and internal cash flow.

The marketing advantages of utilizing integrally reinforced pressure vessel flanges, according to Forged Components representatives who contributed to the tip sheet, encompass improved and more consistent equipment deliveries to customers due to less variables affecting production, more consistent pricing of equipment due to fewer variables estimations, more competitive pricing as a result of being able to use smaller connections for man ways and instrumentation connections, increased sales revenue as a result of increased production, aesthetic appeal of completed work using seamless connection, predetermined cost and guaranteed quality level, assuring on-target performance for the connection portion of a budget.

One major marketing advantage, say Forged Components reps, comes in the form of special contour forged insert lips – contour forged with aligned grain flow – which impart maximum strength and toughness and which can be specified for applications requiring superior resistance to thermal and mechanical stresses.

Tip Sheet: 7 Forged Connection Marketing Advantages of Using Those That Are Integrally Reinforced

In this tip sheet, Forged Components shares the advantages of using integrally reinforced forged connections.

Humble, TX -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/01/2016 -- Forged Components, a global leader in the forging, machining and manufacture of integral self-reinforced pressure vessel connections and ANSI flanges, discusses the unique marketing advantages to using connections that are integrally reinforced.

1. Equipment deliveries are enhanced through the consistency of production with less variables involved. The reduced amount of variables results in less factors that influence the product.

2. Pricing becomes steady due to the consistent production of equipment, also as a result of reduced variables.

3. Pricing is flexible to be more competitive in the industry. This is a result of using smaller connections to produce forged connections for manways and instrumentation.

4. Sales increase from the consistent production and ability to meet customer demands.

5. The completed product's visual appeal shows through using seamless connections.

6. Budgets are maintained from predetermined costs. Quality is not compromised and is, in fact, guaranteed for the connection to be on-target in its performance.

7. Special attention given to creating maximum strength and toughness with the contour of the forged connection with insert lips and aligned grain flow. Applications that need superior resistance to stress from thermal and mechanical processes benefit from specifying the need for contour.

In addition to these marketing advantages for forged vessel connections, the process in which Forged Components, ASME section VIII division 1 vessel manufacturers, operates improves quality control and reduces the cost of production. By simplifying the process, these display the advantages of seamless integrally reinforced forged connections over multi-component fabrication.

The focus for Quality Control Inspectors is on critical areas of the finished product. This focus is an improvement in quality control because it reduces the inspection of areas that are of little to no concern, including the traceability of materials, inspection of component and shop fabrication.

Additional advantages include the cost reduction of the reinforced forged connections through production. Costs are saved in materials, inventory control, handling, quality, and fabrication. Pressure vessel connections are manufactured according to industry standards, including ANSI, ASME, ASTM, and API. Custom pressure vessel components manufacturing is also available for specifications needed by customers.

Tip Sheet: Forged Components Presents the Applications of ANSI Flange Connections

Pressure vessel manufacturer, Forged Components, presents ANSI flange connection applications in the oil and gas, train and rail, nuclear, chemical and petroleum industries.

Humble, TX -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/30/2015 -- Forged Components is an industry leader among pressure vessel connection manufacturers in forging American National Standards Institute (ANSI) flanges to use in a broad range of applications. They adhere to the industry leading standards of ANSI, American Petroleum Institute (API), and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

What Do Flanges Do?

Flanges connect pressure vessels together. They can connect pipes, valves, and other types of equipment. They are used in the oil and gas, train and rail, nuclear, and many other industries.

Applications for ANSI Flanges

ANSI flanges have varying applications that require specific sizes and shapes. The type of flange depends on the purpose of its use. Depending on the use, flanges have different classes for pressure ratings. Most flanges have specific purposes for their use.

Forged Piping Flanges – These flanges are used in manufacturing, pipelines, and power generation. They provide an ability to allow the extension of the pipe in and easy way to openly access it.

Blind Flange – These flanges are used in applications where a pipeline needs to be closed off. It does not have a center hole and instead seals a line or vessel, but also allows it to be reopened.

Long Weld Neck Flanges – These flanges are used where there are extreme temperatures fluctuating and where there is a high amount of handling and bending. Long weld neck flanges are typically used on vessels where extensions are needed. Steel long weld neck flanges are mainly used in the chemical and petroleum industries.

Heavy Barrel – Heavy Barrel "HB" connections reinforce the long weld neck flanges with a thicker barrel.

Threaded Flange: The threaded flange has threads that are tapered to connect to pipes that have threads externally. These are connected without the need to weld the connections together.

There are different flanges within each industry that are used. Flanges used ensure easy assembly and disassembly of pipes. They are either welded or screwed into place. Flanges are machined and available in a variety of materials.

Tip Sheet: Key Benefits of ANSI Flanges and How to Select a Manufacturer

Forged Components, Inc. describes ANSI flanges’ key benefits and how to select a manufacturer from a list of best practices they provide for customers.

Humble, TX -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/25/2015 -- In essence, flanges are metal rings designed to link pipes, valves, pumps and ancillary equipment needed in order to build pipelines. A flange is extremely useful in that it facilitates trouble-free inspections, quick modification and simplified cleaning of the pipes, which comprise pipeline systems.

Multiple types of flanges exist and are used in a wide array of situations and applications. While utilized by numerous industry sectors, the oil and gas industry is certainly among the most prolific users of flanges. The railroad industry also makes extensive use of many specific types of flanges.

Flange Rating Systems

ANSI flanges are those pieces of equipment that meet or exceed design specifications promulgated by the American National Standards Institute. An API Flange is one built to the standards and ratings considerations of the American Petroleum Institute.

The ANSI Flange and Its Uses in Numerous Industry Sectors

ANSI flanges are one of the many flanges currently in existence. These flanges are designated as being "compact" flanges. Typically, this classification of flange is used in industry segments where equipment failure brings the possibility of catastrophic harm. This type of equipment is often found in environments in which a leak would prove devastating, such as might be the case in nuclear, oil and gas applications.

Common Materials Used in Flange Fabrication

It is possible to find flanges rendered in a variety of materials. Flange manufacturers regularly produce brass, bronze, silicone and plastic versions of this equipment, but these do not represent the most commonly utilized medium. The majority of large diameter flange products are now made in forged carbon steel, which has been expertly machined.

Using a number of production methods produces flanges. There are those featuring lips, and those without lips. One common characteristic of most flanges, however, is an attached seal meant to prevent leaking relating to the pipeline's function.

The Benefits of the Blind Flange

A key aspect of a blind flange is the fact that it is meant to permit nothing to flow through it whatsoever. It is intended to form a strong barrier, which allows for downstream flanges to be deactivated while retaining the liquid contained therein. This function proves extremely important when it is necessary to add new piping to existing lines. Blind flanges facilitate a seamless process of expansion.

Shop Fabrication Made Easy

Customers who need ANSI flanges, can look for a manufacturer that makes the process of fabricating flange systems simple by eliminating:

1. Fabrication of reinforcing pad - design layout, cutting, forming work, drilling and weep hole tapping

2. Fabrication of nozzle neck - layout process, cutting and beveling pipe; forming; welding and inspecting plate neck

3. Fabrication of components - fitting and welding the flange to the pipe or plate or a forged cylinder neck piece

4. Installation of reinforcing pad - fitting and welding one or two-piece padding to the nozzle neck and vessel shell

5. Testing and inspection - PT, UT, MT, air testing and other inspections and testing of all components

6. Moving of components around to various assembly stations

7. Chain of custody control over component items for tracing and identification purposes

Better Quality Control

Reductions in material tracing tasks and inspection of shop fabrication methods can be achieved, permitting Quality Control professionals to focus on more pressing matters of concern. Light duty application users will benefit from the use of Long Weld Necks, as they reduce the potential for barrel distortion that welding-related heat inputs can cause in pipe necks.

Lower Production Costs

Forged connections with integral reinforcement can lower the costs of fabrication in the following realms:

* Materials purchasing, requisition and expediting of a single part rather than three

* Handling of just one part into stock followed by rapid final assembly

* Reduced inventory control concerns due to lower volume of parts

* Reduction in inspection, traceability, documentation and testing tasks

* Shortened fabrication calendar which facilitates faster delivery and better purchaser cash flow
