£20,000 Promised in Payments to Lancashire Farmers Ravaged by Floods

Lancashire, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/22/2015 -- Storm Desmond caused havoc across much of the North West of England in early December, with heavy winds and rain leading to flooding in a number of areas. Severe flood warnings were put in place, with exposed and flat land at particular risk. Unfortunately, this has meant that multiple areas of farmland have been waterlogged; especially as fields often flank rivers. The flooding experienced by farms within Lancashire has led to loss not only of land, but also livestock and valuable equipment. In response, the government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has promised to support payments of up £20,000 in order for affected farmers to restore this land. Yet this money is only part of wider effort to support Lancashire farmers not just financially, but through a variety of means, at this difficult time.

Financial assistance from DEFRA is being offered to areas in Lancashire and also in Cumbria – another significantly affected county. A similar scheme was used in order to support communities following the Somerset floods in 2013 and 2014. But other avenues of assistance have become quickly clear in recent days, with local communities – such as those in the Lancaster and Blackpool areas – getting actively involved in helping to shift water from affected areas and even shelter animals. The level of kindness and support being shown could be seen as testament to Lancashire's farming community, something a proud supporter, The Pendle Pig, was keen to comment on:

"Here at the Pendle Pig, we are proud to use locally-sourced meat from Lancashire farms. The county's farming tradition is something to be celebrated, and the community spirit in helping to clear the floods is an inspiration. We will continue to support our friends in the farming community through this difficult time and certainly will continue to source from our local provider. We hope that more follow suit in supporting the farmers."

New GM Maize Blocked by MEPS

Lancashire, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/21/2015 -- On Tuesday this week, The European Commission (EC) adopted a resolution to ban the new glyphosate-tolerant GM maize NK603 x T25 in food or feed. The EC stated that the entire authorization process for GM foods was "under review". This has led to increased attention in the UK towards the chemical contents of our food; with many people preferring to opt for most natural choice.

Concerns were expressed by MEPs who suggested that until improvements are shown, the procedures for authorizing GM food and feed should be suspended. This was met with opposition from the European Parliament who contended that there would be difficulty policing the laws and border checks between pro and anti GM countries may have to be re-established. The Commission is now expected to make a new proposal with a practical and realistic assessment of the procedures. It is expected that the customer's rights to still enjoy non GM food will be seen as important.

A spokesperson from The Pendle Pig was quick to reflect on the recent developments – especially in terms of the impact on catering. They said:

"This is fantastic news for everyone concerned in the industry. We pride ourselves on the quality of our pigs and personally don't use GM feeds – as we uphold the importance of natural, quality fodder for all our animals. All of our pigs are free range and organic and we work very hard to ensure the quality so that our customers enjoy only the finest pork."

Strong Public Support for Local Food Backed by Government: The Pendle Pig Responds

Lancashire, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/26/2015 -- A key hog roast company, The Pendle Pig, had recently commented on the governments plea to have food better labelled, to display just where the food has come from, due to the desire by many to choose local food over anything else.

The government put together a study which reveals that 80% of the general public prefer their food to be local, which helps support local farmers, rather than farmers outside of the area which have no connection to the town, other than as another place to supply to.

In April, it became mandatory for meats such as pork and lamb to be labelled as such, and the government also plan to introduce Great British Foods later in the year, to celebrate the diversity and quality of local meats.

Often commenting on industry related news, a spokesperson for The Pendle Pig said, 'This is great news as local farmers need to be supported, and having the local area choose local food helps the town feel like a town, something which is becoming harder to do as large franchises integrate into town culture.

At The Pendle Pig, we only source fresh organic pigs from the area, so you know you'll be getting a local delicacy at your event, rather than some unknown entity imported from across the globe!'

China's Demand for Pork Set to Skyrocket

Lancashire, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/13/2015 -- Pork is the most prolifically eaten meat in the world with some estimates accounting it for 38% of the world's meat production. And it is particularly popular in Asia and the Pacific regions, where it is most widely consumed in China. Now, new business figures suggest that Chinese demand for Pork imports is set to skyrocket. The regions set to fulfill this demand will most likely be the EU and US, prominent exporters of pork.

As one of the largest economies in the entire world, with the greatest population number, China is a leader in worldwide trends. With around 52 million tons of pork being consumed in a year, Chinese consumption easily equates to over half of the global consumption of pig meat in the world and is an esteemed food. Whole roast pig is considered particularly appetizing in Pacific Island cuisine, and is the national dish of places as far from China as Puerto Rico. The sociability and novelty of a hog roast is a worldwide preference. And the news regarding China's required imports is set to have implications worldwide, as countries will be expected to fulfill this demand and adjust their exports of pork accordingly. It is also likely to influence catering and cuisine trends as oriental lifestyles continue to influence world culture.

About The Pendle Pig
The Pendle Pig is one of the UK's leading suppliers of pork meat for events in the form of hog roasts. As passionate providers of quality catering services, they were eager to comment on these latest developments. 'We think it is fascinating that pork continues to increase in popularity. It is one of the oldest sources of food around, and was feasted upon by kings and normal people alike. Its legacy continues today, and this is evident from the expected projections of pork imports that are required by China. The good news is that everyone can enjoy the delicacy of pork in the form of a hog roast, no matter where they are. We provide exceptional catering services with onsite chefs or machine hire and bespoke menus for all occasions. And we've noticed that it is a popular option which never plateaus, only increasing in popularity yearly.'

MRSA Bug Found in Supermarket Pork Leading to Calls for Free-Range Priorities

Bridgewater Close, Lancashire -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/05/2015 -- Several supermarkets and other suppliers of meat have had to remove pork products from their shelves due to the presence of the MRSA bug found in them. It is thought to be due to the overuse of powerful antibiotics used on factory farms. There is also evidence that the UK could be at threat of a wider health crisis if the issue is not curtailed by authorities. The news comes in the midst of a climate where many are becoming increasingly aware about the source of their food and if it poses any health hazards. Meat reared and raised on factory farms is also used by many catering services, so the news could have wider implications than envisaged.

The need to stock ethically sourced food in turn is becoming an important consideration for many food and especially meat, providers. There have been increasing calls by consumers for providers to stock food which is wholesome and ethical. It could lead to a rise in the service of free range meats which abide by increasingly-strict standards. In terms of catering, there has been enhanced interest in on-site cooking using meat sourced from locally-reared animals.

About Hog Roast Lancashire and The Pendle Pig
Hog Roast Lancashire and The Pendle Pig service are leading suppliers of quality pig roast catering, having supplied thousands of customers with healthy and free-range fresh meat. As regular commentators on industry updates, a spokesperson had this to say, 'One of our key priorities is to provide high-quality meat sourced as locally as possible which is farmed to very high standards. Our clients regularly share their concerns about the injurious chemicals in meat, and they are so relieved when we tell them about the fact that every pig we roast is free range, healthy and carefully selected. This assuages their concerns, and secures their loyalty to us. We provide fresh meat and on-site cooking for our clients, so they can see exactly what they're eating and how it is made.'

Pulled Pork Popularity: The Pendle Pig Comments

Lancashire, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/19/2015 -- According to recent news from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) there is a planned Pulled Pork campaign which will be supported by culinary celebrities including Tom Kerridge, the Michelin starred T.V Chef. With the intention of encouraging interest in British pork as an affordable and attractive food, the campaign for pulled pork is expected to be supported with over 1.3 million 'perfect for pulled pork' stickers displayed on associated pork products in supermarkets. Retailers are hoping this will further the current popularity of pulled meat products and encourage people to try it themselves at home.

Pulled pork especially has soared in popularity in recent years, especially in light of how tender and succulent the meat can be. This makes for a tasty sandwich filling as well as satisfying in itself, and because of how the meat is cooked and drops away from the bone, this is an attractive choice for children also. Pork has seen a particular usage for pulled meat, as the shoulder offers an ideal joint to produce the most ideal texture. That BPEX, the pigs division of the AHDB is therefore planning to use a pulled pork campaign to further sales highlights how popular it is.

About The Pendle Pig
The Pendle Pig, a company based in Lancashire, are key experts in the provision of pulled pork, provided by roasting whole joints of pork as part of a full catering service. They are also frequent commentators on industry news and were quick to reflect on the new campaign.

"We are very excited by the prospect of the campaign to increase the interest in pork products, bolstered by pulled pork especially," a spokesperson said "We are confident this will be very effective and hope that people really can see the brilliant potential in pork.

However, for the best pulled pork experience, we urge that everyone try the most traditional way at least once – with a full hog roast. This is a service we provide and are determined to bring to more. A whole roast pig is sure to be the centrepiece of any event, and in light of the AHDB prospects, is sure to impress."

Study Determines That Cucumber Disease Controls Might Also Be Viable for Pigs, the Pendle Pig Responds

Lancashire, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/19/2015 -- Leading UK hog roasting company, The Pendle Pig, has recently commented on the upcoming British Pig Executive (BPEX) innovation conference, which plans to showcase new experimental methods of controlling disease for pigs, including a study that links cucumber disease control with pig disease control.

The pig industry has started looking at other sectors to help find cures to disease, and a link has been made between the growing of cucumbers and the growing of pigs, in green houses and ventilated buildings respectively. The areas being studied include human medicine, aquatics and horticulture.

The BPEX conference is an annual event, and the event focusses on science, management techniques and technologies, allowing those who attend to learn about new possibilities from studying other industries. Existing techniques will also be detailed at the event, so anyone can make best use of what's currently available to help control disease for pigs.

University of Worcester research scientist, Alison Wakeham, said, 'There are massive similarities believe it or not, between growing cucumbers in green houses and growing pigs in ventilated buildings. Problems with disease (in cucumbers) for example, come in from outside. There's also a need to clean effectively between batches to prevent cross contamination and to identify infectious diseases promptly to reduce production problems.'

Technical innovation manager of BPEX, Charlotte West, said, 'The field of diagnostics has expanded significantly and there is a lot we can learn from other industries as well as our own sector. It is particularly important because of new and emerging diseases on the horizon, as well as the need to pinpoint more accurately and treat infectious organisms to help manage our use of antibiotics.'

Often commenting on industry news, a spokesperson for The Pendle Pig said, 'A healthy pig is a tasty pig, and the new tests to help against pig diseases is great for the industry and the pigs themselves. There are always concerns regarding meat safety, but in 2015 the solutions have never been greater, and it's only going to continue this way as more methods are discovered.

All our pigs are freshly sourced from the highest quality organic farms, making for delicious and healthy hog roasts!'

NFU Conference Shows Optimism: The Pendle Pig Respond

Lancashire, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/31/2015 -- The 25thFebruary saw the annual gathering of The National Farmers Union (NFU) take place, with potentially exciting predictions for the farming and related catering industries. This has excited much comment from prominent businesses working in line with the best farmers, such as the Pendle Pig.

At the NFU conference, a four point strategy had been set down by the British Government to bring increased productivity, competition and resilience to British agricultural practices. For example, in terms of pig farming this means an increased resilience and more skilled workers in the field, allowing for the highest quality meat, especially taking considerations of Free Range initiatives.

In turn, this suggests that there is much progress set to take place in British farming. For example,The NFU conference also showed that whilst France has 219 protected names in food products concerned with agriculture, the UK only has 62. It was the role of the conference to draw attention to these figures, so that they can in turn efficiently addressed in the future. This includes also reducing the use of pesticides in light of set restrictions from The European Commission in then what could be seen as sustainable, progressive methods of agriculture.

The Pendle Pig, who work closely with the local agricultural industries in Lancashire to source their high-quality meat and are regular commentators on market activity, were quick to comment in light of the NFU conference:

"We think that the conference shows real positivity in the farming markets," a spokesperson told us. "In turn, this means that catering closely related to agriculture is in an especially strong position.

"At The Pendle Pig, we work closely with local farmers to obtain the best quality, free-range meat for our hog roast. With the NFU guidelines seeking to improve resilience and make the EU rules accessible and workable for farmers, this inspires confidence knowing that we can continue to provide high quality products to our customers. In turn, this allows us to offer meats and accompanying food at the most affordable prices. We hope people can share this excitement and taste of progress as much as we do."
