UK Pig Production on the Rise

Padiham, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/19/2016 -- The latest figures from Defra show that pig meat production is steadily increasing in the UK. The statistics showed that figures for March were at 79,800 tonnes of output, an increase of 5%. Clean pig slaughterings also rose by 3% for the month standing at 920,000 head, being heavier when compared with March 2015 at an average weight of 83.1kg... a whopping kilo more.

The research suggested that an additional 7,500 sows were brought to slaughter between January and March of 2015. Northern Ireland saw lower output than the remainder of the UK which is reportedly caused by the Easter holidays having an impact. Ongoing financial uncertainty in the industry has ensured inflation in sow slaughtering with near to 10% more total output than the figure for March of last year.

A spokesperson for Hog Roast Yorkshire said "The latest figures from Defra show can only mean one thing; more delicious pork being enjoyed by the British public in 2016. This is incredible news!We have also felt the impact as more people have booked to have a hog roast for their event in 2016 than any other year."

1 Million Shoulder Joints Suggests Pulled Pork Campaign Is off to a Positive Start

Padiham, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/30/2016 -- AHDB Pork, a prominent organisation behind the UK Pork industry, has recently been involved in launching the industry's latest 'pulled pork campaign' for 2016. This indicates that the 'pulled' form of the meat is highly popular and seen as productively marketable –complemented by a new TV ad which took place on ITV and the emphasis that over a million pork shoulder joints are easily available for British public to buy and create their own pork. That February saw the start of the campaign and that it is taking shape through March, highlights the importance of pulled meat as raising the profile of pork as a whole.

Pulled meat is created through cooking the meat for longer over a lower temperature, therefore sealing in succulence. The resultant tenderness and ease of eating – typically falling away from the bone – are factors why pulled pork is anticipated to be popular, and showing that pigs do not just provide bacon and sausages.

Keen to comment on the significance of pulled pork and its increasingly popular attention was The Yorkshire Pig, a provider of hog roast services, serving up pulled pork at a range of events.

A spokesperson had this to say:

"That the 'pulled pork campaign' is being continued in 2016 and is set to increase engagement in these coming months epically – particularly through the TV and online – shows that it is held in high regard as a way of enjoying pork. That is why we are proud to provide a roasting and catering service which provides the possibility of pulled pork at range of events."

Yorkshire Pudding Day Draws Attention to More of the County's Fine Food: The Yorkshire Pig Responds

Padiham, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/25/2016 -- The recent celebrations for British Yorkshire Pudding Day, which fell on the 7th February 2016, have drawn attention to a wider trend; a popular focus on Yorkshire's cuisine as a whole. The county is often famed for its substantial and iconic food – including not only the puddings themselves, but also foodstuffs such as Wensleydale Cheese, and particularly popular right now, pulled pork. A number of Yorkshire pudding day events actually drew further attention to pork as a product; for example the Hog's Head Inn in Alnwick celebrated the occasion by having a competition to create some of the biggest and best puddings, served up with a variety of roasted meats.

Roasted meat and batter puddings are a traditional and much-loved British combination; particularly inspired by Yorkshire. It has thought that the celebrations of this fine food have provided a kick-start for a greater focus on wholesome, Yorkshire-inspired food, with a bit of adventure. For example, pulled pork is again showing particular popularity as it a traditional foodstuff yet offers a slightly different twist from the typical beef. But will it be big for 2016? The Yorkshire pig, a prime provider of a hog roast catering service in the area was keen to comment:

"Yorkshire Pudding day was fantastic as drew attention to the wide variety of food and combinations inspired by this county. It showed that 'yorkies' are a much loved combination with pork too; and the county in itself is known or its quality roasted meats. That's why we are proud to offer a hog roasting service of a high quality."

The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon Is Set to Return for an Even Bigger 2016: The Pendle Pig Comments

Padiham, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/04/2016 -- Recent reports have drawn attention to the launch of the Plusnet Marathon entry on January 5th – which means that people can now put themselves and register for the race – which is set to take place on the 9th October 2016. The first Yorkshire marathon of this kind took place in 2013 and has been carried out annually since; every year selling out due to the scale of popularity. Therefore, the 2016 event, now the fourth year of the marathon, is anticipated to be bigger then ever. This emphasizes the active spirit and high level of public engagement in Yorkshire, as well as setting up many people to be excited for a big autumn occasion. A number of businesses in the area have been keen to comment on this, including The Yorkshire Pig.

An especially big 2016 is expected for the marathon as the 5th January opening for entry has already seen a considerable number of applicants, with many running for charitable causes. Thousands of runners are therefore expected at the start line, ready to take part on a route which is varied and interesting. Furthermore, the marathon is not only expected to bring participants to the towns of Yorkshire, but also tourism. It is clear, especially following the Tour De Yorkshire last year that the county is being seen as an increasingly desirable place for sport and tourism gatherings.

Keen to comment on the recent news was the Yorkshire Pig, a hog roast catering company working throughout the county. A spokesperson had this to say:

"The news of the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon and the anticipation that it is going to be so popular is great news. The county is known for its sporty vibe and big social events, and that is why we are proud and prepared to offer extensive catering options. We offer a full hog roast service; protein-packed and delicious food ideal for a variety of events."

Leeds Indie Food Festival Is Set to Return; Celebrating the Best of Yorkshire Food

Padiham, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/22/2015 -- It has recently been announced that Leeds Indie Food Festival is set to return in 2016, following a highly popular event in 2015. The festival took place on a city-wide scale and originally started out by championing Leeds' independent food industry. The coming year is set to incorporate more businesses than ever and showcase to the public a range of edible delicacies from around Yorkshire.

Yorkshire certainly has a strong relationship with fine food, and the festival aims to draw attention to this. Cities in the county such as Leeds and Sheffield have seen their own 'food scenes' emerge and develop considerably over the years; with tourists even willing to travel in order to try particular produce.

Yorkshire is classically known for its puddings, but other traditional food choices include curd tart, parkin and increasingly so, locally-reared meat. Keen to comment on this was The Yorkshire Pig and a spokesperson had this to say:

"The news that the Leeds Indie Food Festival is coming back in 2016 is highly positive. It illustrates an important movement in Yorkshire food at the moment – an emphasis on locally-produced, top quality food and drink. And this isn't just limited to festivals; here at The Yorkshire Pig we provide locally-reared pork cooked to perfection, truly capturing the tastes of this fabulous county. After all, it's a place known for its agriculture and opportunity, which makes meat even better. We are proud to be part of a place where the culinary and cultural worlds meet for all to enjoy and wish all the best to those planning to take part in the festival next year."

Pig Breeding Should Be About Quality over Quantity, Recent Research Says

Padiham, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/24/2015 -- Research by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Hillsborough last month found that piglets born heavy but weaned to be lighter are actually less likely to perform as well as piglets born light but weaned to be heavier.

What does this mean for the pig farming industry? Particularly with the strain on the pig farming market over the past year, farmers may be tempted to breed their pigs to birth as many piglets as possible. However, the AFBI's research, combined with that of Doctor Mark Hawe, adviser to the Department of Agriculture in Northern Ireland, has strongly suggested that this is not the solution to the problem.

The research shows that the breeding focus should now be on the size and weight of the piglets during the weaning period, rather than the number of piglets per litter. "Instead of aiming solely for large litters, which can lead to some very small piglets at birth, there will be a better lifetime performance by focusing on larger weaning weights," says Dr Hawe.

There is also good news for the adult females, as the care and attention expands to those from whom the piglets are suckling; both sows and gilts are not to have too many piglets to feed at any one time, so they can produce adequate amounts of milk for the piglets and are not being over exhausted. They will also be fed more often and a better quality of food, as the healthier the pig, the healthier the piglets who suckle from it. Milk flow and quality is also affected by hydration, so fresh, clean water should always be in ready supply for the sow.

Case studies have also shown that smaller piglets in a litter will get bullied during feeds, so will not be able to gain the nutrition and strength they need; the best solution proved to be grouping all the smaller piglets together to feed. Similarly, sows have bigger teats than gilts, so smaller piglets should be matched to suckle with gilts and bigger piglets with sows.

Darren Hargreaves, Hog Master from hog roast company The Yorkshire Pig, was glad to hear about the progressive research: "This careful management of the piglets at a young age is providing healthier, better performing pigs for the future. This is great not only for the future of the pig meat industry, but inevitably breeds succulent, tasty pigs for roasting when the time comes.

"Just because they are bred for meat doesn't mean they shouldn't be looked after whilst they are being reared; well cared for livestock always results in better quality meat in the end."

BPEX Campaign Underway to Promote Pork for Young Shoppers, the Yorkshire Pig Responds

Padiham, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2015 -- UK hog roasting company, The Yorkshire Pig, have recently commented on the campaign the British Pig Executives (BPEX) are planning to start, which hopes to promote pork in a way which will draw young shoppers to purchasing the meat.

The BPEX campaign is set to start on the 29th April 2015, with the £2 million marketing push including TV advertising, PR, social media and in-store activity. The campaign is set to last between three to five years, to help change the perception of pork for the younger audience.

BPEX revealed that pork still remains popular with people over the age of 60, but more needs to be done to promote the meat to younger people, and the BPEX have high hopes that the campaign will help drive sales.

The company are focussing on pulled pork for the campaign, after the success it had seen thanks to US cookery shows using it frequently in the past year, and the pulled pork could help increase the sustainability and profitability of pig farming in the UK.

A spokesperson for BPEX said, 'Changing consumer perceptions about pork will take time, but we are confident rejuvenating the image of pork, starting with pulled pork, will add value to the supply chain.'

Many processors and retailers have supported the campaign, with the BPEX stating that some companies have invested into the campaign themselves.

Often commenting on industry news, a spokesperson for The Yorkshire Pig said, 'The BPEX campaign sounds like a great way to promote just how tasty pork can be, and we believe it will draw in more consumers for the meat throughout the year.

Our hog roasts draw in huge crowds, and the quality of the meat is what keeps organisations and people hiring us. The pulled pork melts in your mouth and it's easy to see why the BPEX are focussing on that type of pork, and hog roasted it tastes even better!'
