iYogi, a leading remote tech support company published a recent research report so that you can have deeper understanding about the technology usage and monthly spend on services. This survey report shows that 63% of US households spend more on technology bills than utility bills.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/10/2012 -- A new report published by iYogi Insights titled, Consumer Research on Growing Spends on Technology Services 2012 revealed that 63% of US households spend 35% more on technology bills than utility bills. The research also shows that mobile phones top the chart on monthly technology spends. iYogi, a leading remote tech support company published this new research based on surveying nearly 1100 of its customers to understand their technology usage and monthly spend on services.

The rising cost of energy has become a topic of hot debate, with US Department of Energy reporting that consumers spend 6% to 12% of their income on utilities. iYogi put its hypothesis, "is technology now the real utility" to the test through this research. The research based on an in-depth survey offers interesting insights into the digital home, with technology bills for services surpassing utility bills for a majority of the respondents. Research shows that with the ever-increasing role played by technology in every sphere of life, consumer spending on connecting to the Internet, subscribing to online services, mobile communication, and multimedia entertainment has also risen.

"iYogi Insights is a new initiative that reviews emerging and disruptive technologies and trends impacting our lives. Our large panel of customers, across multiple geographies, contribute to these insights", says Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and co-founder of iYogi.

"Technology is now the real utility as increasingly households spend more on a combination of technology bills to stay connected than their utility bills. The results of the survey also cite that technology continues to be the key enabler for empowering people in today's fast-paced interconnected world, driven by demand for newer and smarter devices that connect to the Internet and to each other".

Key highlights from iYogi Insights: Consumer Research on Rising Technology Spends 2012:

• Number of technology devices in households with more than two members goes up to 10-11.

• The highest expenditure is on mobile services with an average of $94 a month and an additional $19 on downloading games, music, movies, etc. Voice and data services are the most popular with 60% respondents saying they subscribe to such packages.

iYogi Reviews: Top Five Computer Infections

The new series of iYogi Reviews highlights the top five computer infections and their post affect on our computer systems. It precisely educates our customers about the mentioned infections in detail and further how to safeguard your systems from the same.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/15/2011 -- iYogi, an independent direct-to-consumer provider of remote tech support services, has released the latest 'iYogi Reviews' about top five computer infections. Enabling advanced security settings on a computer is not always enough protection, as cyber criminals are always working overtime to stay ahead of the technology race and figuring out new ways of breaking into users' computers. The 'iYogi Reviews' series published from time to time is aimed at helping users understand various aspects related to personal computing. In this latest review, iYogi takes a closer look at the workings of top five computer infections: Viruses, Malware, Worms, Trojans and Spyware.

Instances of security breaches are r egularly recorded in organizations big or small. The Sony PlayStation network incident, where hackers successfully breached the security wall and wiped out millions of Sony users' account information causing havoc is a good instance. However, corporations and large organizations are not the only ones at risk of being attacked by hackers and cyber criminals. Home PC users are as much or more at risk, as hackers capable of cracking advanced security systems deployed by corporations can easily break into most individual systems without much trouble.

While all of us can be susceptible to attacks by hackers and cyber-criminals, a better understanding of the different kinds of infections which can be inflicted on our PCs , is a step towards protecting vital data from being stolen or preventing our systems from crashing. Different computer infections are designed for specific purposes. Some may cause system breakdown, while others may steal sensitive information like username and passwords. Some infections might just steal banking details, while others target entire networks and cause system slowdown.

Computer infections are intelligent pieces of programming. Each one is designed to perform specific tasks. Infections usually work as a single cell system, targeting vulnerable parts of a computer. Some infections work as a team or a set of programming files, targeting different areas of a computer collectively. This is done in order to complete the specific tasks of corruption as assigned by their creators. These infections are capable of causing damage to the computer system. Earlier versions of most infections were designed to corrupt the user data or boot sector of the computer but with time, these infections have become deadly and intelligent. These infections target specific information and once they find it, send it to the hacker. Then they wait for a new set of instructions, never giving any clue about their presence to the PC user.

Virus
What is a virus?
A virus is an intelligent software program, designed to associate itself with an existing or running application. It can also create an application of its own. This infection can run along with other programs and applications, corrupting computer settings and damaging files.

Viruses likeILOVEYOU a.k.a Lovebug/Loveletter Virus, CIH a.k.a Chernobyl Virus, Melissa Virus, Code Red have all proved to be lethal for computers.

How does a virus work?
Viruses can easily be associated with a running application on the system. However, at a later stage viruses may multiply and infect other applications as well. Viruses can slowly kill a computer by sharing its system resources and performing unsolicited tasks or utilizing the system resources and making the computer slow.

Malware
What is malware?
Malware also called malicious software is a pack of applications that includes set of programming codes and executable files primarily viruses, Trojan horses, spyware, adware etc.

How does malware work?
Malware uses multiple infections to corrupt computers and it is one of the most effective and easiest modes of infecting PCs and used often by hackers and scammers. According to studies by security experts, most computer infections are results of malware. It is easier to infect a PC with multiple infections and bring it down in no time. Malware are dangerous as they act as carriers for performing Internet related crimes like e-commerce and phishing scams.

Worm
What is a worm?
A worm is software that infects computer files and then replicates itself at a later stage. It follows the same principle to spread in other machines and then to the network.

How do worms work?
Worms are nightmares for PC users as they are capable of bringing an entire PC down in no time. Worms work quickly and multiply at lightning speed. It can quickly replicate almost every folder and file in a system. Worms take advantage of security flaws of the system and look for the same flaw on other machines so that they can multiply and spread infections there too.

Worms also carry a set of instructions referred to as "payload". These payloads make desired changes in the target computers' OS like opening ports, changing policies, deleting registry keys etc. These changes allow hackers to access the computers and steal sensitive data. Some worms operate with such stealth that an antivirus present on the system at times might fail to detect them.

Trojan
What is a Trojan?
A Trojan horse is a deceptive computer infection, which appears to be a part of genuine software. Once it get installed on a computer it changes the computer settings and allows hackers and attackers to take control of the machine, steal data and perform unauthorized tasks at will.

How does a Trojan work?
Trojan horses come in under the guise of authentic application software. While they do not multiply like worms, they are equally lethal as they can modify and delete files, steal data, and keep a tab on a user's Internet habits. Some advanced Trojans are capable of crashing systems, downloading and uploading files too. When the settings on a machine are changed and the security compromised, the worst scenario could be that the entire data on the hard drive and the web surfing details stored in cookies and temp files will be at risk.

Spyware
What is spyware?
As the name suggests, spyware is a computer infection that specializes in collecting users' information secretly.

How does spyware work?
Spyware targets cookies and other temp files, present on computers to steal personal information. Spyware is not there to slowdown a PC or corrupt data. On the contrary, it steals vital personal information and sends it to the hacker. Unlike worms, spyware do not multiply or replicate but they are more devastating to computer users as they target personal and financial information.

"Computer infections in form of viruses, malware, spyware etc are the scourge of the digital age which users across the world have to battle with on a regular basis. Even as antivirus and other security software manufacturers work overtime to stay ahead of the race against computer infections, newer and more insidious forms of infections are finding their way into people's PCs every day," says Vishal Dhar, President, Marketing and co-founder iYogi. "We get calls from our subscribers daily complaining about symptoms on their PCs which stem from some form of virus or other infection which our tech experts help resolve while helping them also take the necessary steps to protect their machines from future attacks."

iYogi Reviews: Wi-Fi Hotspot Security Gaps

With more and more people using the net, the rate of its misuse is becoming far too common. To make users aware of the dangers of using Wi-Fi hotspots, iYogi reviews the inherent dangers in this practice and lists steps on how users can stay safe while surfing in public places.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/12/2011 -- With the rapid increase in Smartphone and tablet users, service providers are offering a plethora of services to lure new as well as existing users. Wi-Fi hotspots are just one of them. A Wi-Fi hotspot is a dedicated area where customers can use their Smartphones, tablets or other Wi-Fi enabled devices like netbooks or laptops to go online with ease.

Though this service is a boon for people on the move wanting to go online, it also gives scammers and hackers an opportunity to exploit the inherent weakness of Wi-Fi security, leaving customer's personal data extremely vulnerable to hacking attempts. iYogi reviews how customers' data can be at risk and what they can do to protect it.

Connecting to the Internet using Wi-Fi hotspots in railway stations, airports, hotels and cafes while being easy to use can sometimes be exploited by scammers and hackers to get into people's Smartphones and laptops and steal data. Though the security systems in most phones are capable of detecting external threats like virus attacks, data being hacked while moving in and out of a machine, through a fake gateway is something phones can't always detect. As these fake gateways set up by hackers act like any authentic gateway to connect to the Internet, it is difficult to detect a fake gateway easily.

What is a Wi-Fi hotspot?
A Wi-Fi hotspot is an area where one can go online over a local wireless network. These Wi-FI hotspots are created using router or other wireless devices which act as gateways. Common hotspots are coffee shops, airports, train stations, libraries and other public places. As Wi-Fi hotspots free users from cables and hardwire connections they have rapidly become popular with users. But there are reports of stray incidents of users losing their personal information over Wi-Fi networks, which have raised concerns over the security of Wi-Fi hotspots.

How are fake Wi-Fi hot-spots created?
A hacker can easily create a fake hotspot gateway using a simple mobile Wi-Fi Internet router at any public place like a train station, airport etc. Once the fake Wi-Fi router is connected and ready to work, wireless devices within that area will try connecting to it and to the Internet using it. Once the devices are connected and data is transferred, the hackers can easily view and access all communication and data transfer made from all devices using the gateway. Keeping a tab on the browsing habits of users is just a click away. At times users have to pay for the Wi-Fi service for which they need to fill in a form and enter their personal information along with financial data eg. credit card or bank account number. In such cases, the hacker keeps a tab on this information and uses it later. In this entire operation Wi-Fi users are totally unaware that their personal and financial information are being compromised.

Is there a way to check whether a Wi-Fi hotspot is genuine?
Technically there's no way to check whether a Wi-Fi hotspot is fake or genuine. Few service providers are now trying to secure their hotspot services but are still a long way away from making them totally secure. Others are advising their users to take preventive measures like using VeriSign keys that allow users to be certain that their financial information is secure and safe. Checking the authenticity of the websites being browsed is something one should also try and do. But lack of tougher security measures and effective safeguards , Wi-Fi hotspot users remain vulnerable to data theft and hacking attempts on their devices.

What can be done to safeguard one's data?
While using a Wi-Fi device make sure that the network is secured with Wi-Fi protected protocols, and access keys are set to the right parameter. These setting options change across platforms like Android, Windows, Mac and iOS device. One can refer to a manual or manufacturers' website for Wi-Fi security setting instructions. It's always advisable to disable the Wi-Fi option when a device is not in use. This limits the chances of someone sneaking into a system undetected.

While using Wi-Fi hotspots, if possible try accessing e-mails through corporate mail services like Microsoft Exchange servers, Lotus Notes or other e-mail clients as these are far more secure and safe. For those who don't have access to corporate e-mails; Gmail, Hotmail, AOL or Yahoo Mail are fairly safe bets if secure sockets layer (SSL) protection is enabled on the browser. The SSL can be activated from security page. The security page can be accessed from the Internet options menu on the browser homepage.

Before entering financial information online check whether a webpage is secure or not. Websites with an "https" prefix is considered to be secure and encrypted. Chances of losing data through these sites are minimal. So, next time before entering any personal information while surfing the Web at a Wi-Fi hotspot, make sure that there is an https extension before the web address.

Users can always encrypt their saved data be it on a phone or a computer. Encrypting data can help secure information to a large extent. As the entire data stored in the computer is encrypted, it will be extremely difficult for anyone to access the information. The simplest option to protect data is to lock the device when not in use.

As it is almost impossible to tell whether a Wi-Fi service or a hotspot is secure or not, taking few important safety measures can go a long way in helping one safeguard data. Service providers are working to get this fixed and it should not be too long before a full proof security solution is found.

What iYogi has to say:
"Wi Fi zones and hotspots at public places has given a whole new fillip to computing on the go with the ability to surf the Internet conveniently from airports, cafes etc.", says Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and co-founder of iYogi. "However, with ease of use comes the threat of hacking and data theft, as security of Wi-Fi zones are not at desired levels yet. It is absolutely essential for users making use of public Wi-Fi zones to take all the necessary safeguards to ensure that they do not become victims of hacking or losing critical information."

iYogi Alerts: Inheritance Scam

iYogi Alerts about the ongoing Inheritance scam in order to enlighten you of the tips and identification methods regarding the upsurge in such online spam e-mails and scams. This scam fools people by convincing them that they inherited some money, property, etc. from their far-off relative. To know more, visit iYogi website.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/12/2011 -- iYogi, a direct-to-consumer provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has announced the latest 'iYogi Scam Alerts' about the prevalent inheritance scam. The scam usually perpetrated through e-mails is intended to mislead recipients that a long-lost deceased relative or friend has left them a substantial inheritance. Scammers sometimes also target potential victims claiming that they share their surname with someone who just passed away, leaving behind a substantial fortune. Such announcements of unexpected inheritance through e-mails or phone are usually just scams to lure people. To help prevent people from falling prey to common scams and fraud, iYogi regularly posts alerts about prevalent scams through its 'iYogi Alerts'.

Although the e-mails may change in tone or content, the aim is to finally trick people out of their money by dangling the prospect of a large and unexpected inheritance from an unlikely source. These fake e-mail notifications of such inheritance ostensibly come from a representative of a law firm or at times private investigators and security consultants. The representative might state in the e-mail that he/ she is conducting a standard process investigation on behalf of some renowned bank trying to establish the beneficiary of some large inheritance for one of its recently deceased customers. Recipients are then asked to answer some similar set of questions to affirm the fact along the following lines:

• Do you know a relative who shares the same surname as yours and was last settled in [name of some foreign city]?

• Born on [dates that are many decades in the past]?

• Do you know the investment of considerable amount made by such a person [name of authentic bank would be suggested]?

• If possible can you establish your eligibility as a rightful owner?

Once the victims are reeled in with dreams of a far-off rich relative, leaving them a huge fortune and hasten to provide personal information in detail, they are slowly relieved of their money in the form of various fees, which are supposedly necessary to settle the estate and other formalities. By the time the victim realizes that there is indeed no inheritance and that s/he has been conned, s/he is already poorer by a fair amount of money. Inheritance scams have been around for a while and are propagated through letters, newspaper ads, e-mails or phone calls searching for the rightful heir of huge estates or large sums of money.

What can be done about it:
Although these scams are simple and people easily get trapped, it is quite easy to avoid becoming victims. Recipients of such inheritance communication just need to verify few things before they proceed further. This includes asking for a physical address, phone number and firm details, which then need to be verified with the help of external experts if needed. When the sender claims to be representing a well known bank or legal firm, the recipient needs to check with such entities whether such a firm is working on their behalf. Poorly written communication with bad syntax and grammar is also a strong indicator of a fake e-mail. iYogi also recommends not to respond or indulge in communication from anyone communicating from a foreign country on until one is completely satisfied with the person's antecedents.

What iYogi has to say:
"While the idea of suddenly inheriting a large sum of money or estate may be a very tempting offer for most people, the chances of such an inheritance coming from an unknown and unlikely source, intimation of which is sent through e-mail or phone, should be enough to raise suspicion," says Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and co-founder of iYogi. "Exercising extreme caution and discretion while dealing with any dubious communication and verifying senders' credentials are the best ways to avoid becoming victim of such scams."

Top 5 Consumer Complaints: iYogi Reveals Five Primary Issues Users Face During Wireless Router Configuration to Network

iYogi launches the ‘Top 5 consumer Complaint’ series, which provides complete information about the common problems faced by users at the time of configuring wireless router to network. We can also provide you the step-by-step instructions for troubleshooting such problems.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/06/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support service, released a report on 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints' related to wireless router configuration. This report is designed to provide information about common issues faced by customers when trying to configure a router.

Wireless routers have redefined the way people go online. However, while routers are fast becoming house hold devices, many users still find it difficult to set-up and install them. Wireless set-up is simple and easy if done right and as per the guidelines. Otherwise it can become a tedious and challenging task.

Based on feedback from its hundreds of thousands of subscribers captured in its proprietary technology platform, iMantra, iYogi has identified the five primary issues users face while configuring their wireless routers.

iYogi reviews the top 5 complaints related to Wireless router configuration:

Arduous Configuration: To configure a wireless network, all one needs is a wireless router and important cables. But one needs to be extremely careful while connecting them, making sure there are no broken parts and that the jacks are not loose at the ends. Some computers which are not configured for wireless will need wireless adaptors or dongles installed first. Laptops are easier as they come with in-built wireless systems. Also as each and every network is different setting up or personalizing can sometimes be challenging and may require expert help.

Problem Enabling File Sharing: Wireless routers are also often used as a file sharing devices, as they are enabled with USB ports. Users can simply connect their external USB drives to them and share files over the network. Users can also share their entire computer or a specific drive. Sharing a drive over the network with same SSID name or specific IP address is easy. One needs to open few ports, and check/uncheck some firewall settings on the router webpage. It's always advisable to use a security password on computer drives so that other users on the network cannot access it without authentication. Sharing data over networks is easy but configuring data sharing properties or adding a new sharing device on a wireless network is not all that simple. It varies across manufacturers so users may have to do a bit of research to get acquainted with these features on the router webpage.

Enabling temporary wireless access: One of the biggest security risks to a wireless connection is allowing other people permanent access by design or default. Often, if a known person asks for urgent access, most users end up giving permanent access. When a visitor asks for access it is always advisable to enable a temporary access so that security is not compromised. In a temporary access, the time is preset and the user can use the wireless service for a certain duration. After that time frame the computer will stop recognizing the network. Router manufacturers are trying to simplify this process and recently few makers have launched a USB key with an automated setup routine. This application can be used on guest computers to help them get temporary wireless access.

Determine who all are on wireless network: A wireless network is not as secure as hardwire. Anyone can access it, and no matter how great the security architecture is technically, it's not foolproof. It's highly recommended to keep a tab on users. Regular checks might help you get details of network usage. Routers are shipped with a default SSID. Change it so that other users can't sneak in using this information. To check who all are on the network, users can browse "attached devices or DHCP client list" on their router's webpage.

Enabling effective security measures: Security of a wireless network is always a challenge and should never be compromised. These are a few things users can do to enhance overall security of their network:

• Set up static IPs on devices – this saves potential IP address conflicts, it's like giving a permanent unique code to a machine.
• Enable Mac address filtering – this is like adding an extra layer of defense, as this feature performs complete check on devices connecting to the network and prevents unwanted network break-ins.
• Assign a WEP passkey to the network – this allows devices to exchange encoded messages.
• Set up Ad-Hoc Home WLAN – this makes entire network a closed group and devices are free to share data without going through a centralized location.
• Update router firmware frequently – this ensures the router's first line of defense is current.

What iYogi has to say about it:
"Wireless has liberated the way we surf the Internet and go about our daily business, allowing us to work in different parts of our homes and offices by not being restricted to just once spot. However, while wireless has its many advantages, users are still challenged with configuration of routers and network security, " says Vishal Dhar, President, Marketing and Co-founder of iYogi. "Our tech experts are constantly being approached by subscribers with issues related to the wireless router configuration, which they help resolve."

Top 5 Consumer Complaints: iYogi Reveals the Top 5 Complaints While Setting-up Internet Parental Controls

iYogi introduces ‘Top 5 consumer Complaint’ series that highlights the primary issues faced by the users while configuring Internet Parental Controls. This latest review includes complaints with the Content Advisor settings, installing additional parental controls, forgetting administrator’s password and more.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/24/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, released a report on 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints' related to Internet Parental Controls. Computers are a part of most homes today with adults and children using the Internet for entertainment, communication and accessing information. However, while the Internet has eased our lives in many ways, there is always the risk of extreme dependency and misuse of the vast information that the technology provides. Added to these, access to inappropriate content and the risk of becoming targets of cyber-stalkers are among the many risks that can pose serious threats to children. This is why it is necessary to have some control over access to the Internet in homes with children.

Internet parental control is a feature that restricts children's access to the web, number of hours they can spend on the computer and games or applications they can run. This latest iYogi reviews report on 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints' addresses the most common issues that users face in implementing Internet parental control, based on the feedback from iYogi's large subscriber base. iYogi continuously monitors and publishes the most common complaints to help people solve their day-to-day problems related to technology.

iYogi reviews the top 5 complaints related to Internet Parental Controls:

• Content Advisor settings – The Content Advisor tool controls the type of content that the user permits the computer to access via the Internet. At times, one might encounter problems opening websites that were not meant to be blocked. This usually happens because the Content Advisor tool works on the basis of ratings that websites voluntarily provide to block / allow certain content and as not all websites are rated, the unrated ones also automatically get blocked. To resolve this issue, the settings on the Content Advisor tool needs to be adjusted to ensure that only the desired websites are blocked out.

• Ability to access despite active control settings – When using parental control software applications, the child might be able to continue to chat with friends or anyone whom parents might find inappropriate; depending on the settings. For example, despite having all the access blocking mechanisms in place, it may still be possible to access unwanted sites; if these live chat applications are open at the time of activating these controls. To completely block such Web applications, one must ensure that all the applications are signed out of and closed before the controls are set. This will cover all Web applications under the control settings. If the child is still able to access the restricted websites/ Web applications, check whether the installed antivirus system on the PC is compatible with that of the Internet parental control software.

• Error message while modifying Parental Control settings – When one attempts to modify the Parental Control settings in a Microsoft Office 2007 program or Microsoft Office 2010 program on a Windows Vista-based computer system, there might be an error message saying "The user account does not have permission to save your changes. You must log on as an administrator or other account allowed to modify Parental Control settings." This problem occurs when the user does not have the permission to modify Parental Control settings. One can resolve this problem by running a Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2010 program as an administrator and then modify the Parental Control settings.
Note: Any modifications made to the Parental Control settings of Microsoft Office programs will affect all the related Office programs.

• Installing additional parental controls – Sometimes, the basic controls that Windows operating system provides are insufficient and parents may find it challenging to keep their children from falling prey to the darker sides of the Internet. Additional parental control software applications from other service providers can be used within the default parental control settings. For example, Windows 7 operating system does not include the features of web filtering and activity reporting. However, most of the available additional control software includes these extra features. To put these additional controls in place, one must download and install the software application from the manufacturer's website.

• Forgetting administrator's password – System administrators have complete authority and control over the computer system and forgetting the password means losing control over the system. Therefore, it is essential to know how to change the system administrator password in order to continue to enjoy the privileges of installing and uninstalling programs, creating or deleting user accounts for both administrator and standard users and adding/ removing hardware. So, if one has the access to an alternate administrator account or is logged in under the system administrator's account, the password can easily be changed. To change the password click 'Start' in the main menu Select 'Control Panel' choose 'User Accounts' Click 'User Accounts' to advance to the management section. Click 'Manage user accounts', which would lead to a list of all user accounts on the system. Now, click system administrator account and then click "Change the password." Once the new password is typed twice, click "Change password" to save the changes and then exit the "User Accounts" window.

What iYogi has to say :
"While the Internet has eased our lives in many ways by changing the way we work, communicate, shop and entertain ourselves, there is also the darker side of the Internet especially for children having unhindered and unsupervised access to the Web. These could include easy access to inappropriate content and chat sites frequented by cyber stalkers and criminals who prey on unsuspecting youngsters," says Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and co-founder of iYogi. "Technology allows parents to regulate and track what their children are surfing on the Net, but implementing parental control tools also come with their own set of unique problems and loopholes. Our tech experts are regularly helping users resolve issues with their parental control software on their computers."

Top 5 Consumer Complaints: iYogi Reveals the Five Primary Issues Users Face With Printer Installation

If you have any complaints while installing your printer, iYogi has what it takes to help you out. iYogi provides the top 5 complaints people face during printer installation and ways to resolve the issue.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) --06/10/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, released a report on 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints' related to the installation or setting up of a printer. Installing a printer on a computer should not be a difficult process. In fact, with continuous advances in computer technology, printer installation is designed to be relatively easy.

Different printers may encounter different problems during the installation process. However, there is always the possibility of problems with the hardware or software that arise during the installation process. This latest iYogi reviews, 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints' sheds light on the most common printer installation issues that users face based on feedback from iYogi's large subscriber base. iYogi continuously monitors and publishes the most common complaints to help people solve their day-to-day problems related to technology.

iYogi reviews the top 5 complaints related to printer installation:

• Connection/ Cable Issues – The most common problem that occurs while installing a printer is related to connectivity. To simply diagnose and rectify the issue the printer either needs to be attached to a network (including wireless printers) or directly to a computer. During the installation process, one must use the proper cables. The cable acts as a USB for a local printer and Ethernet for a network printer. The cable connected to a printer consists of a 36-pin centronics connector at one end that is connected to the printer and a 25-pin-D-type connector at the other end. This particular end is attached to a port located in parallel and is known as LPT, or printer port. The printer is furnished with a data buffer that collects data from the computer and delivers it to the printer. However, a bad cable will make smooth printing nearly impossible. Lastly, the connection might get disrupted whenever it passes through an electronic interference.

• Incorrect/ Outdated Drivers – Drivers are the most essential components for the functioning of a computer and its related peripherals. It's important that printers come with their own drivers, which need to be installed before a printer can start working. Each printer model requires its own software. The most common printer issue arises when incorrect or faulty printer drivers are used. This may lead to issues while printing and even lead to "Access Denied" errors. The wrong configuration of drivers can lead to degraded print quality. One must always download the latest and the best available printer driver, which works with your operating system. One must also ensure that the correct setting options are selected for the printer – this includes RAM settings and settings for the source tray related to paper type, paper size, paper orientation, and resolution of print.

• Malware Issues – It is extremely important to remove malware, or any kind of malicious content, from the computer system before installing the printer's driver. The presence of malware harms the installation process by interfering with what was intended to be a simple procedure. It may either stop the installation completely, or in some cases slow down the process. To remove or check for any malicious content on system before the installation process, choose an antivirus application. In addition, ensure that enough disk space is available before installing the drivers. Malware applications take a lot of space on the system. After the successful removal of hardware, check the availability of space. If there is not enough space to install the drivers, installation might fail. Each set of drivers has different disk space requirements.

• Hardware Incompatibility – Checking a printer's compatibility with the hardware is essential before making a purchase or trying to install a new printer.Microsoft provides the hardware compatibility list for easy reference. This list can be helpful in determining whether a printer, or any other device being installed, is compatible with the current version of Microsoft Windows operating system installed on the PC. Using this list one can update Windows with the latest Windows Service pack best suited for the new printer, ensuring compatibility.

• Improper Port Configuration – Another common complaint arises out of incorrect settings of the parallel port in CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) set-up. To ensure correct configuration, the parallel port must be integrated on the motherboard or Windows may indicate a problem with the Device Manager. Always configure the printer so the information is sent from the correct physical port. Most of the printers use a serial port, which is labeled as LPT1. Some of the latest printers use USB ports instead of serial ports. Windows operating system is efficient enough to automatically detect and configure the port and device driver information once the printer is turned on – this is of course after the connections have been made.

iYogi's response to consumer complaints:
"Even as printers begin to proliferate in homes, given the availability at all price points and ease of installation, we still receive complaints from our subscribers related to printer set-up," said Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and Co-founder of iYogi. "Users are still plagued by common problems, which continue to frustrate them and our tech experts help resolve this specific issue on a regular basis."

Top 5 Consumer Complaints: iYogi Reveals the Five Primary Issues that Users Face With USB Devices

iYogi has introduced 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints', wherein computer users can get complete information about computer and its peripheral related problems faced on a regular basis. In our latest report, one can know about the issues experienced while using USB devices.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) --06/07/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, released a report on 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints' related to USB devices. The use of USB (Universal Serial Bus) devices is quite common and millions of users across the world use them. These devices are designed to be plugged/ unplugged into the computer system without affecting the functioning or power on mode of a PC. This includes hardware devices like cameras/ web cams, scanners, etc.

Sometimes, the port wherein the USB device is plugged in may stop responding. There can also be issues if the device is repeatedly inserted or removed, without being stopped properly. This latest iYogi reviews series on 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints' addresses the most common USB devices related issues that users face based on the feedback from iYogi's large subscriber base. iYogi continuously monitors and publishes the most common complaints to help people solve their day-to-day problems related to technology.

iYogi reviews the top 5 complaints related to USB devices:

• USB not detected/ functioning – For a USB device to be detected, there must be an appropriate driver installed on the computer system. Windows operating systems usually come with the necessary drivers installed or they can be automatically downloaded from 'Windows Update'. Most USBs have a plug-and-play functionality, wherein they install the necessary drivers by default as soon as they are plugged into the PC. Windows 'Device Manager Utility' can be used to manage and control USB settings. There can possibly be two instances if USB does not work after plugging in; either Windows does not find a driver for the USB device or Windows does not recognize it. If Windows installs a device driver automatically, there is a notification indicating that the device is ready to use and if it is unable to detect the driver needed, it prompts the user to insert the disc containing the driver that comes with the device. The drivers can also be downloaded from the device manufacturer's website. The problem can also persist if any of the following: device, driver, USB port or power supply is defective or if there is not enough power supply to USB hubs.

Note: All the drivers must be compatible with Windows version installed on the PC. Do not download drivers that are compatible with other versions.

• USB device not recognized immediately after standby/ hibernation – The computer might have difficulty in recognizing a USB device once it is plugged into a Windows–based computer system, immediately after the computer resumes either from standby or hibernation mode. In such cases, users will be prompted with a warning message "Unrecognized device has been found." This chiefly happens because when the computer resumes, there is a time span of 5 to 10 seconds, when the 'Selective Suspend' feature of the USB driver interferes with detection of the new USB device. To resolve the issue one must unplug the device and then plug the device back into the computer.

• Lack/ Non-functional USB 2.0 port in computer – Sometimes, high-speed USB 2.0 ports might not work due to the lack of correct drivers installed for the ports in the computer system. There might also be a possibility of ports being faulty. If an external USB hub is plugged into the PC, the chances of it being out of order or lacking the proper drivers are always a possibility. One must ensure the proper functioning of USB ports or hubs by checking for 'Device Manager'.

• AutoPlay automatically opens a program – When a USB device is plugged into a computer, a dialog box is shown that is called the AutoPlay box. AutoPlay sometimes, automatically opens a program that might not be required by the user. To never see the AutoPlay dialog box again you can follow some simple steps: Click 'Start' Click 'Control Panel' Click 'Hardware and Sound' Open AutoPlay. Now, select the 'Take no action' option, to ensure that the AutoPlay dialog box is not visible again. Moreover, if one wants to choose an action each time he/ she plugs in a device or insert a disc, 'Ask me every time' option can be selected and a program that needs to be automatically opened each time can be chosen.

• Device cannot be stopped – Once the purpose of using the USB device is fulfilled, users would want to stop and remove the device. However, many-a-times "The device cannot be stopped right now" error message is displayed. The most common reason is that a running program has 'opened' files on the device drive. The most annoying part is that this often happens even when all the programs on the desktop are closed. The device gets locked due to one of the background processes running on the computer, like antivirus software, etc. 'USB Safely Remove' icon on the system tray helps to detect device locking due to several reasons and also to resolve the issue.

What iYogi has to say about it:
"USB devices have caught on in popularity because of their versatility and ease of use, and problems with a USB device or port can sometimes bring our digital lives to a grinding halt" said Vishal Dhar, President, Marketing and co-founder of iYogi. "Our tech experts are regularly helping customers resolve problems with their USB connections."

iYogi Alerts: Online Software Scam

‘iYogi Scam Alerts’ is an alarm for the Internet users that provides complete information about the upsurge in the online threats. In our recent report, we inform about online software scam that tricks people into buying fake software program.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) --06/01/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has announced the latest 'iYogi Scam Alerts' report focused on pirated software sold online. This scam operates by selling pirated versions of original software for significantly lower prices than the original costs. However, buying and downloading such software can expose users data stored in their computer or network to hackers and identity thieves. In order to help users understand the workings of such scams and avoid becoming victims, iYogi regularly posts alerts about prevalent scams through its popular 'iYogi Alerts' series.

The operators of this specific type of scam tempt the victim by selling the software at a very low price. In reality, the software programs are unlicensed, stolen or pirated. Ordering any such software can easily end up with online criminals remotely taking control over a computer and accessing the data stored in it, without the user's knowledge. The danger with online software scams is not limited to getting robbed but extends to possible exposure to personal details and information, which could have other long-term repercussions.

Online software scams can also offer you OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) software at very reasonable prices. The scammers in this situation rationalize the low pricing through citing cheaper packing and manual costs. In reality, OEM software:

• Cannot be resold

• Is sold in combination with hardware

• Is frequently pre-installed at the time you buy a new computer

Furthermore, selling OEM software alone is illegal. Therefore, anyone offering to sell OEM software is probably out to cheat you. Scammers also sell malicious software in the name of antivirus software etc., which instead of protecting a computer infects it with viruses and other malicious programs.

Below are some channels used by scammers to target users for online software scams:

• Auction sites: Online auction portals are the most common platforms used to target potential online software scam victims by posting pirated software up for sale. Although most of these auction sites have legitimate products and deals, they are sometimes used by scammers to carry out their objective to sell illegal online software.

• Other Websites: The most frequently visited Websites and search engines offer space for advertisement and are frequent targets to advertise the fake software. Other sites, which allow content files to be uploaded for sharing are also common platforms used by these scammers as they allow users to upload content and receive a link that they can post to various other users through e-mails or ads. In addition, the accessibility to block the information about the person controlling a website has made it more difficult to trace the authentication of the site. This has reduced the scope of protection for the consumer on many levels.

What iYogi has to say about it:

"The options to acquire quality software at lower than market prices are often difficult to resist. Scammers and cyber-criminals are using this to cheat people into buying pirated and fake software, which can often have far-reaching effects," said Vishal Dhar, president of marketing and co-founder of iYogi. "Being cautious about so called deals on the Internet and buying software from manufacturers or other reputed sources can prevent people from becoming victims of such scams."

Top 5 Consumer Complaints: iyogi Reveals the Five Primary Issues Users Face With Antivirus Installation

iYogi has introduced its 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints' series which highlights problems faced by PC users while installing antivirus. We can also provide step-by-step instructions to resolve the problem.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) --05/11/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, announced its first 'Top 5 Consumer Complaints', a series that provides insights into common complaints from users. These reports are based on the large subscriber base on most common problems faced and the series is aimed at helping people save time and simplify computer use.

In the first report iYogi reviews the top 5 consumer complaints regarding issues directly related to the installation of antivirus software. The below report from iYogi highlights the top issues related to the process.

What is Antivirus Software?

With increase in necessity and demand of these security tools, today there are many antivirus programs available in the market. All the programs vary in features, support and scanning options they offer to consumers. These programs run in the background to detect and remove malicious files that are capable of slowing down your system, leading to system crashes or theft of personal information.

Why is this important?

• Antivirus software is essential for any computer used for surfing the Internet.

• The software helps protect computers from malicious programs and processes.

• The process of installation can be tedious and infuriating at times.

• Understanding the issues that might occur while installing antivirus programs can ease what may seem like a daunting task.
The errors that might occur during the installation process of antivirus software can be caused due to several factors. These errors might seem to be complicated but are not impossible to resolve. What one needs to know are simple rules.

iYogi reviews the top 5 complaints about installing antivirus software:

• Conflicting Antivirus Programs – If there is existing antivirus software on a PC, there is a high possibility of errors preventing the installation of another antivirus program. If the installation process stops midway and states the presence of another security tool, immediately uninstall the existing software. This can be done by going to the 'Control Panel' and clicking on the 'Uninstall/ Remove' option. Then one can proceed with the installation of the new program process.

• Compatibility Issues – Antivirus programs do not always match the computer's hardware and configurations. Purchasing any antivirus software without checking compatibility may result in a failed installation attempt. As a result, users have reported facing system slowdowns, system crashes or an entire system freeze. If the service pack owned by the consumer does not match the requirement mentioned on the software CD, there are greater chances of facing installation errors.

• Virus Hijacking – Whenever a malicious program has already entered a computer before installing the antivirus software; installation often fails due to existing malicious programs already on a computer. Some viruses like Trojans are strong enough to disable the security center on PCs. To install antivirus programs in such a situation, one might need to first manually remove the malicious files. As this can be a difficult task, it is best to have a tech expert do the job.

• Disguised Security Programs – Downloading or attempting to install antivirus programs from unknown companies should always be avoided. Countless rogue applications are capable of entering your PC in the name of antivirus software – they come disguised as legitimate security tools. As a result, the users have reported paying for something of no use, causing damage and loss to the system, and frequent complaints regarding the loss of important information. Always go for genuine security programs and brands.

• Updated Software – Some versions of particular antivirus software might not be compatible with other operating systems. For e.g. when users try to install an older version of antivirus software to the latest or newer versions of Windows based computer system, they often complain about installation errors. To avoid this, buy a correct version of antivirus software, which will contain software compatible with the operating system.

iYogi's response to consumer complaints:

"Strong antivirus software from a reputed company is a must for all PC users, given that most people use their computers for communications – both personal and official – and storing their important data in." said Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and co-founder iYogi.

"Every day we receive complaints from customers about system crashes and resultant data loss due to virus attacks and problems faced while trying to install antivirus software in their systems, which our tech experts help resolve."

iyogi Reviews: the Difference Between a Laptop and a Netbook

iYogi reviews the difference between a laptop and a netbook. With this latest review we aim at informing you about the best deals when you plan to buy a laptop or a netbook based on your requirement. Go through this information before you make a purchase.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/05/2011 -- Laptops have come a long way as a convenient mode of computing. However, the latest buzzword in the computing industry is netbooks. iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has recently come up with a report to help distinguish between the two so you can make an informed purchase. This latest 'iYogi Reviews' report gives you a comparative analysis between the laptops and netbooks. For starters, the netbook is smaller, lighter, cheaper and simpler.

According to research firm Gartner, the sale of laptops witnessed an enormous increase by 43.4 percent in the first quarter of 2010 compared to 2009. Out of which, 71 percent of the overall laptops sales growth was due to netbooks. However, netbooks have their own limitations. Before making any buying decision consumers should have a deeper understanding of both laptops and netbooks.

"The entry of netbooks into the market has played a huge role in the quantum leap in laptop users across the world primarily due to their lower price points and ease of use," said Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and co-founder of iYogi. "However, deciding if the laptop or netbook is the best option depends on individual usage patterns, needs and budget."

iYogi reviews the top features that distinguish laptops and netbooks:

• Portability - What instantly comes to mind, when one thinks of a netbook is the ease to carry it anywhere and anytime. The display or screen size of a netbook ranges from 7 to 10 inches, while a laptop display or screen size is larger, usually from 13 to 22 inches diagonally. This makes netbooks weigh less and smaller in size as compared to laptops. Also, netbooks weigh less than 5 pounds while laptops are reasonably heavier.

• Resolution – Resolution is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that are displayed on the screen. Usually, the larger the screen, the better the resolution. Most netbooks today allow for maximum screen resolution of 1024*600 pixels. This is the lowest resolution still offering you effortless reading and comfortable surfing over majority of websites. Anything below this resolution, combined with a smaller screen, will not allow you to view the whole width of the web page in a single view. Thus, you will need to scroll the page back and forth to read a complete line of text.

• Performance – Size is not the only discriminating factor. The main drawback of netbooks is weaker performance specifications. If you compare it to a laptop, a netbook is comprised of lower hard drive speed, processor speed and data memory. As a result, running any kind of processor-intensive jobs (i.e. graphics, footage or video) would be obstructive and not as clear as a laptop.

• Keyboard – One of the more noticeable drawbacks of a netbook when compared to a laptop is a cramped keyboard with small keys. There is a much greater possibility to mistype in a netbook as a result. You will likely spend much of your time correcting and re-doing the mistakes you made.

• Optical drives and connectivity – Netbooks lack the provision of optical disc drives – this means you cannot operate any CDs or DVDs in it. However, all netbooks come with built-in Wi-Fi and the latest ones have Bluetooth connectivity allowing for an easy wireless connection to a 3G mobile phone for Internet access while on the move.

• Price – Price is one of the most considered factors that lead people to opt for netbooks. Netbooks are available within the price range of $200-$500 depending on the brand. On the contrary, the lowest price for a laptop is around $400 and can go up to $2,000 if one is looking to invest in a high-quality brand with all the premiums. Thus, the netbook price range undercuts the laptop market considerably. One can easily get Internet access, type and edit documents, and play games that don't require a lot of graphics to run. The higher end netbook models offer more storage, more RAM and other added features.

• Battery life – Due to its large screen and peripheral devices, laptops necessitate more power backup because the overall battery consumption is significantly higher. Laptops cannot run on true battery power for as long as netbooks can. Battery life is a strong point that netbooks have over laptops - some models also boast offering up to 9 hours. The smaller the size of the netbook the more power efficient they are. You can conveniently use a netbook for 5 to 6 hours on average without recharging the batteries through an external source. This is approximately 3 times longer than what your laptop would deliver.

Despite the lack of certain features, the price, portability and battery backup, all put together; can make a netbook a better deal, especially for students and travelers. But depending on individual requirements and approach; whether one wants it to remain at one's home or office or needs to carry it while on the road, one can choose between the two. Also, if you are an avid user with daily requirements of high processing speed, storage etc., iYogi suggests that a laptop is your best bet.

iYogi Alerts: Watch out for the Domain Name Scam

‘iYogi scam alerts’ latest release highlights the most popular domain name scam that targets people owning companies to cheat them in the name of registering or renewing the domain name by offering them tempting rates, much before the date of expiry.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/04/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, released a report on domain name scam that operates by offering people to register domain names for their companies(i.e. iyogi.com). In today's Internet-driven world, a domain name is critical for organizations to establish their presence on the Internet. A domain name ensures that people browsing the Internet can find you conveniently when you host your web site; it represents your company brand and is considered a key asset to any company.

Capitalizing on the growing demand for domain names, several fraud companies urge you to buy a domain name for your company at the earliest, in order to quickly begin driving sales leads to your site. The latest in the series of 'iYogi scam alerts' attempts to highlight how the domain name scam works. Based on feedback from its large subscriber base, iYogi continuously monitors and publishes online fraud and scam alerts to help people avoid becoming victims of this scam.

The domain name scam operates by sending you an e-mail convincing you to renew or register your domain requirements at cheaper than market rates. Such e-mails, pretending to be in your favor, are an excuse for these companies to generate more business.

You might also receive a call from a company asking you for payment to renew your domain registration. As your domain registration is probably up for renewal soon, you do not suspect that the caller may not be genuine. Poachers and scam artists generally contact you well in advance of needing renewal to avoid the risk of making contact after your credible domain name provider has done so.

In many other cases, the fake registration company would call you with an offer to reserve a domain name for you with a new extension, which has not been released yet. They would certainly offer a better price and will take you in confidence that your domain is being looked after. The risk in such deals is that you would never come to know how many other companies have booked a space for the same extension. Additionally, there is no certainty that the domain name provided by such companies gets an approval.

Registering with such companies can be risky as they can disturb both your business and finances. Therefore, it is important for you to be vigilant about such tactics.

What can be done about it:

• It is always better to stick to your existing hosts or website design team rather than approaching a company that you are not familiar with.

• You must make a note of when your domain names are due for renewal so that you can avoid paying any suspicious invoices arriving before time.

• Last but not the least, right before your domain expires, contact your web designer or site hosts to ensure that they renew it on time. Re-registering a domain name is essential in order to avoid others from grabbing it which might lead to your business incurring the loss of site traffic that has been generated in the past. Also, the credibility of your company can take a serious hit, if your customers go to another website with disturbing content under the same domain name. Even worse case scenario, your competitor purchases your domain name and re-directs all traffic to their site.

What iYogi has to say:
"In today's Internet-driven world, the domain name for an organization is more important than it's physical address. That said, cyber criminals have been quick to cash in on the opportunity by convincing people and businesses that their domain registration is about to expire," says Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and co-founder iYogi. "To avoid falling prey to such scams for something as important as a domain name, it is critical to always work with known hosts and treat it as seriously as renewing the lease of one's office."

iYogi Alerts: Fake Antivirus Scam

‘iYogi alerts’ informs you about fake antivirus scam. Such scam tricks you by sending virus infection warnings on your PC and convinces you to buy a rouge security software. We, at iYogi can assist you in protecting your computer from malicious software, in order to stay safe and secure while using Internet.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/29/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has released a report on the fake antivirus scam that has affected millions of Web users all over the world. This scam capitalizes on the fear of Internet users that their computer will get infected by malware and an organization of scammers will con them. The latest edition of 'iYogi Alerts' aims to create awareness and prevent you from falling victim to criminals conducting fake antivirus scams. Based on feedback from its large subscriber base, iYogi continuously monitors and publishes activities to alert other customers of online fraud and scams.

Security is a prime concern for all Internet users. And rightly so as cyber criminals are forever on the lookout for new ways to pry into your computer and steal sensitive and personal information. Fake antivirus scams operate with scammers, hackers and identity thieves working in an organized fashion to deceive unsuspecting computer users. While the scammer may aim at selling the fake products, the hackers are generally out to get your personal information; which can result in identity theft and huge losses.

Extensive research at iYogi has revealed how fake antivirus scams works. The pop-ups that appear when you surf the Web are often the carriers of malware. The majority of computer users have come across some of these, which carry warnings meant to scare you about virus infections and spyware on your computer. Many of these come in the form of a triangular pop-up, in yellow or red.

You will start having problems with your PC after opening these pop-ups regardless of whether you choose to follow their warnings, or simply close them. If you take action on the warning message, you will most likely end up purchasing the fake antivirus as a solution to your problems. Even if you are not deceived and simply close the pop-up, they will start multiplying rapidly and your system will begin slowing down.

The fake virus alerts are also triggered by Trojans, which get into your computer from e-mail attachments, malicious websites or during a simple download.

What iYogi has to say:
"We are frequently approached by subscribers seeking assistance in resolving computer issues resulting from malware entering users' PCs in the guise of antivirus software," said Vishal Dhar, co-founder and president of marketing of iYogi. "In addition to being stringent about opening pop-ups and e-mail attachments from unknown senders, installing good antivirus software from a reputable company is the first step in protecting your computer and data stored in it."

What you can do about it:

• Never click on pop-ups
• Do not open e-mail attachments from unknown sources
• Use antivirus products from well-known and established brands only
• Install a good firewall to guard your PC from malware
• Scan attachments with antivirus when you download them
• Set your Windows security to at least 'medium' level
• Consider having Firefox as your browser, as it offers advanced security

iYogi Reviews the Top Five Laptop Issues for Mobile Users

iYogi informs you about issues that laptop users face and how these can be tackled. iYogi also provides you help to keep the data in your system safe and secure as hackers are increasingly prowling the digital domain to attack unwary Internet users.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/25/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has announced a new 'iYogi Reviews' revealing the top five laptop issues that travelers face. With the increasing escalation of laptop market share and rapid growth of mobile consumers, experts at iYogi produced research looking directly at the laptop issues that face users frequently on the move. Sourced from iYogi's knowledge base iMantra™, this report is compiled on the basis of customer interactions and covers in-depth solutions for the top five laptop problems confronted by mobile users.

"The increasing dependency on computers for work and play has created a growing base of mobile users who simply cannot live without their laptops", comments Vishal Dhar, President Marketing for iYogi. "More than a third of the world's workforce in the coming years is expected to be mobile and consumers want access and flexibility. As a result, they are driving a greater adoption for laptops."

iYogi reviews the top five issues and resolutions for laptop users:

• Internet security: If a user connects a laptop to a public Internet connection or unsecured Wi-Fi (i.e. at an airport or hotel), without taking adequate security measures, then the data sent and received across the network becomes accessible to hackers and privacy intruders. You are opening your device to possible identity fraud and making all your personal information available to hackers in the area.

Solution: The user is required to activate the built-in firewall included in the Windows operating system. This must be done every time the user connects the laptop. For a detailed solution on turning on the firewall, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/firewall/turn-on-the-in-built-firewall.html

• E-mail error alerts: SMTP, also known as Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, is used to send e-mail messages from an e-mail client to a mail server. When the e-mail client installed on your system is unable to send an e-mail, then an SMTP error message or code is displayed. Usually, an SMTP error is displayed when the outgoing server address is incorrect or incomplete. You should verify the complete server address before sending any e-mail. Error messages are often displayed such as "SMTP Error 550" or "SMTP Error 553" while trying to send an e-mail. This is most during common during travel and a common problem reported by users.

Solution: To see step-by-step solutions to fix error messages and ensure hassle-free e-mail communication on your laptop while traveling, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/email/resolve-smtp-errors-in-sending-e-mails.html

• Battery consumption and powers surge: While traveling, locating an electrical outlet compatible with your laptop charger can sometimes be difficult. To be a proactive user on the move depends on how long the battery can last without needing to recharge.

Moreover, an unexpected power surge while working on the laptop can cause serious damage to the system.

Solution: You can configure your laptop's settings to enter standby or hibernation mode after a defined period of inactivity. Users can prevent the damage caused due to power surges by utilizing a reliable surge protector. To access a step-by-step solution to change the power settings of your laptop, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/laptop/configure-power-settings-in-your-laptop.html

• Threats or loss of confidential data: The safety and security of private and confidential data while traveling is another major concern among users.

Solution: Complete data backup can help prevent data loss. Additionally, you can encrypt important files and folders on your laptop.

As a result, even if someone gains access to your laptop, they will not be able to read and view your confidential data and information. To access step-by-step solutions to install encryption software and take a complete backup of all the data, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/data-backup/encrypting-important-data.html

• Access to comprehensive tech support: Just like you would not consider traveling without travel insurance, access to comprehensive tech support while traveling with your laptop should be a priority. For problems and issues that are beyond your personal scope of troubleshooting, you will need professional assistance and it is imperative to subscribe to tech support. This can be accessed from anywhere and anytime. Because the concept of remote access to PCs for tech support is now easily available, this is an ideal option for those traveling with their PCs.

Solution: To learn more about iYogi's great tech support, visit: http://www.iyogi.net/technical-support/avail-comprehensive-tech-support.html

iYogi Alerts: Beware of Credit Card Fraud

The latest report in ‘iYogi alerts’ informs you about the credit card fraud. In this fraud, fraudsters cheat merchants or business owners by providing details of a stolen credit card for ordering unreasonably high priced stuff online. iYogi aims at informing its customers of the online fraudulent activities that might con you, resulting in losing huge amounts of money or incurring a great loss.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/21/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has developed a report revealing activities and patterns behind credit card fraud that dupes innocent companies or one-time product sellers into accepting online payments through corporate or personal credit cards that have been stolen. The latest edition of 'iYogi Alerts' helps a computer user learn about credit card fraud and how to protect themselves from it. Based on feedback from its large subscriber base, iYogi continuously monitors and publishes activities to alert other customers of online fraud and scams.

This kind of fraud operates using stolen credit card information. After a transaction goes through, the credit card owner will naturally not pay for items which s/he never bought and the payment will be withheld by the credit card company. As the merchant, you will lose your merchandise to online scam artists and receive possible fines or a chargeback fee by your bank. Avoiding credit card fraud shouldn't interfere with your productivity or demand constant prevention efforts resulting in missing out on possible sales or eating away at personal time. To help you out, the latest iYogi alert reveals specific patterns that make it possible to recognize credit card fraud. Most of the con artists using stolen or fake credit cards place hurried orders for expensive items in bulk, usually late at night, from a free e-mail address which cannot be traced.

What you can do about it:

• Check that the physical address of the buyer matches the credit card billing address.
• Insist that the customer uses an ISP based e-mail address which can be traced. The ISP address should be in the same area as the customer's address.
• Call back the customer at his/her telephone number and verify the order.
• Insist on getting the three unique digits on the back of the credit card. These are helpful in validating genuine credit card transactions.

What iYogi has to say:
"As businesses depend more and more on online services to speed up sales, accepting payments through online credit card transactions is also speeding up the chances of becoming the target of credit card fraud," says Vishal Dhar, President Marketing and co-founder iYogi. "While credit card companies are adding extra layers of security to credit card transactions, merchants who accept payments via this mode need to be vigilant and run some basic checks in order to protect themselves from being duped by online criminals."
• Libraries – Organizing and locating documents is easier and more intuitive. Rather than randomly searching for a document, you can type in different libraries like communications, contacts, pictures, music, videos, etc. in the search box for a shortcut to the document. With this new feature, you do not have to store the content all over your PC.
iYogi Alert: Internet Ticket Fraud

iYogi informs you about the Internet Ticket Fraud, which aims to dupe people who buy online tickets for sporting, musical or dance concert and any other event. With our latest release on frauds on iYogi Alerts, you get information on how to keep yourself protected from such kinds of scams and frauds. We also provide tips for keeping such fraudulent schemes and frauds at bay for safe computing.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/13/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, released a report informing online users about Internet ticket fraud which targets people purchasing tickets for various events online. Based on feedback from its large customer panel, iYogi continuously monitors and publishes activities to alert other customers of online fraud and scams. Sports and music enthusiasts are primary targets for this type of scam. This latest 'iYogi Alert' is aimed at helping you understand Internet ticket fraud and help you avoid being the next target.

How does Internet Ticket Fraud work? Fraudsters simply set up authentic-looking websites. These websites essentially mirror a legitimate online event service – e.g. TicketMaster.com – the difference between the sites could be as simple as using the number 0 in place of the letter o in the URL. Simply because the site looks valid, Internet ticket fraud tricks millions of people into handing over their personal credit card information and buying tickets from them. As a result, the majority of the tickets delivered are fake, and often no tickets are delivered at all.

Internet ticket fraud can devastate your credit, personal identity, and of course, your plans for the evening. In addition to the frustration and embarrassment of being turned away at the ticket booth, you miss the opportunity to watch your favorite events, even after shelling out a significant amount of money for tickets. Internet ticket fraud has the worse consequences for the victims tricked into parting with credit card and other personal information, which starts a new cycle of harassment, identity theft, and fraudulent charges on the victim's credit card.

What you can do about it:

• Get your tickets verified by organizers of the event.

• Be wary of tickets you receive via mail on poor quality paper.

• Watch out for receipts and invoices with grammatical errors.

• Never agree to wire money as payment for tickets.

• Organizers are better off having barcodes on tickets, as these are programmed for single use only.

• Work with event sales sites that allow you to print your ticket off immediately.

• Always follow up with a phone call and speak to a real human being to confirm your purchase.

What iYogi has to say about Internet ticket fraud:
"Buying tickets for events online is convenient and saves time, but most shortcuts come with a price and its own set of hazards," says Vishal Dhar, President, Marketing and Co-founder of iYogi. "Like any online transactions, it is essential to take some basic safeguards against fraud so you don't end up a victim of countless financial scams and miss your favorite event at the same time."

iYogi Reviews: Key Elements to Consider when Buying a Laptop

iYogi Reviews the top 10 key elements to consider when buying a laptop to avail maximum value for your money. iYogi provides you with detailed information about all the aspects that you need to keep in mind before you buy the laptop. We can help you in choosing the right laptop that suits your budget as well as requirement.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/07/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has announced a new report to help consumers with some of the complex decisions associated with buying a new laptop. You must always keep a watch on certain key aspects when you plan to purchase a new laptop or buy one for the first time. The latest edition of 'iYogi Reviews' is intended to help users learn about these important areas.

We rely on laptops for so many day-to-day needs like communicating for work and with family and friends, storing important data, and entertainment. When the time comes to purchase a new laptop, the process is often difficult, given that the technology gets updated very frequently with more advanced editions and versions. Also, with the diversification within the technology sector it is becoming practically impossible to stay up-to-date. This edition of 'iYogi Reviews' is aimed at providing information about the things to look out for while buying a laptop and helping consumers make the right decision depending on their specific needs.

A laptop is different than a desktop computer as far as features and functions are concerned. Here are 10 of the most important features to look for while purchasing a laptop for yourself to get the maximum value for your money:

The Processor – Faster the processor better is the performance of your laptop. While comparing laptops it is important to review the processors. Always choose the fastest processor that you can afford. The Intel Pentium M CPU lineage offers excellent speed combined with good battery life. If you combine these chips with Intel wireless LAN electronics and either the 915 Express or 855 chipset, Centrino mobile technology is ready. The only drawback with the Pentium M series is its high price. If price is a concern, you can go for the affordable AMD mobile processors. AMD chips offer optimizations for high performance, wireless capability, and long battery life, but slightly vary in performance when compared to Intel. However, a faster processor, such asCore 2, will have less battery life. So, if you just want to run Microsoft Office, play an MP3 and do a little bit of browsing, perhaps the ULV processor is the best deal for you.

Display/ Screen size – There are two types of displays, active-matrix (thin-film transistor or TFT) and passive-matrix (or dual-scan). It is advisable to opt for the active-matrix display, if your budget allows. With this technology, the picture appears sharper and smoother. A wide 17-inch laptop is always a favorite option unless you travel a lot. Wide-screen notebooks are another option with 16:9 aspect ratios, offering larger, sharper and all-round better images than their otherwise standard 4:3 screens. You can easily open two documents or web pages side-by-side. The most common laptop screen sizes are 12.1, 13.3, and 14.4 inches. Unless you are a frequent traveler, larger screens are always a better option.

Different Editions of the Operating System – If your main requirement is high speed, your best option is most likely the Windows XP operating system. On the contrary, if you want a modem interface, the only option you have is the Windows Vista. If you are a media buff and use your laptop for work as well as play, you can opt for the Windows 7 operating system. In case you want to switch to Windows Professional or Windows Ultimate edition, you have an easy option of the 'Windows Anytime Upgrade'.

Upgrades – Before you jump into an expensive purchase, check on the cost of upgrades like more RAM, a larger hard drive, a Blue-ray Disc movie player etc. You can enhance your new laptop's capabilities by paying a little extra. It's cheaper to buy extra RAM with a brand new laptop than getting it later. This way you can save on money and the effort of installing new hardware later.

Power back up/ Batteries – Batteries act as the in-built UPS (un-interrupted power supply) for your laptops, making it very important to check the battery life of the laptop that you plan to buy. You must always check for Nickel-Cadmium batteries as they are lighter, have a higher energy density, and do not suffer from recharge-inhibiting memory effect. However, most laptops have Lithium-ion batteries. Not only this, consumers must also look out for battery capacity and the number of cells as higher the range of the battery capacity, longer is the backup time. You must also ensure that the manufacturer clarifies what the standard battery usage life is when using the portable computer in all power modes. This is a necessary step as manufacturers usually indicate battery usage time at the lowest possible settings.

Slots/ Ports/ Drives – Ports are an essential part of a laptop as they will determine how many external devices like your phone, MP3 player, digicam, external USB drive etc., you can connect to your laptop. If the laptop has an e-SATA or 1394 port, or both, it can still serve the purpose. Old laptops will also have a memory slot and a memory card reader. An Ethernet port is a must for all laptops and there also has to be dedicated switches for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Drives are sometimes overlooked while considering features for a portable computer. However, it is an important aspect and laptops come with various drive configurations like 'One drive bay', 'Two drive bay', 'No drive bay'. When the CD-ROM and the floppy drive are interchangeable, it is called a 'One drive bay'. 'Two drive bay' laptops will have a floppy solution as well as CD-ROM solutions while a 'No drive bay' laptops are extremely light-weight and utilize external drives instead of internal.

Graphics or a Graphical User Interface – If you are vying for video RAM and have to make a choice, you must always aim for a graphics chipset that is capable of sharing at least 64MB of system memory and you must have the best and the latest GUI (Graphical User Interface) on your laptop. If you are a serious gamer, graphics or the quality of the graphics chipset in your laptop will be your topmost priority to determine the performance of your laptop. For this, you must have a Dedicated Graphics Card. You can choose the latest card and also check if it is possible to upgrade the graphics on the particular laptop you choose to buy. The latest NVIDIA or ATI GPUs are the favorite picks for gamers as they give you higher performance at lower battery consumption and make your laptop capable of several functions like 3D games, wide-screen HDTV, dynamic presentations, graphic processor and more.

Memory/ RAM – It is extremely vital for any laptop to have enough memory space as a pre-requisite to high performance. You must determine the memory space included in a PC as well as verify the possibilities of upgrading the available memory in the future.

Lots of RAM allows you to run more applications simultaneously. Features like graphics editing, image editing and video editing - crucial for 3D gaming - also demand for sufficient space. The more memory the laptop has, the more efficiently it will run.

Weight and Portability – You must always look for a easily portable laptop; in other words, how easy is it to carry and fit into tight spaces. Most laptops weigh between 1-2 kgs on average. Depending on your requirement, whether you travel often with your laptop or just confine it to home or office premises, you can make your choice. Buying a sleek and lighter laptop that could fit into your bag, is a better idea if you travel often, whereas, if your use is confined to your home and office, you can opt for a bulkier option with more features.

Warranty – Last but not the least, you must check the manufacturer's standard warranty. In case there's any problem with the laptop, the company either offers a repair immediately or within the first few months of use. So, it is essential that a manufacturer's warranty should last for a year. This will give you coverage without requiring you to pay for an extended warranty. Moreover, an extended warranty can be a valuable piece of insurance if you believe that your laptop stands a high risk of damage due to travel or rough use.

What iYogi has to say
"Choosing a new laptop is always difficult given the wide variety and new versions available at any given time," says Vishal Dhar, President, Marketing and co-founder of iYogi. "It is important that consumers keep in mind their own needs and usage patterns and matches them against the best value for their money when purchasing a laptop."

iYogi Alerts: Beware of Online Automotive Fraud

iYogi alerts about the different types of Online Automotive Frauds that one might fall prey to while buying an automobile on the Internet. This can be the possible outcome of a hasty decision taken by you out of sheer joy and excitement to find your favorite car or bike at a surprisingly low price. iYogi makes you aware of the things to watch out for to keep yourself safe while making online automobile purchases.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/07/2011 -- iYogi, the provider of on-demand remote tech support services, has released its latest iYogi Alert on online automotive fraud, in an ongoing effort to warn consumers of online scams through a series of notifications. Based on feedback from its subscribers, iYogi continuously monitors and publishes activities to alert other customers of online fraud and scams. The rising incidence of online automotive fraud has resulted in individuals losing large sums of money to criminal activity. This latest iYogi Alert is aimed at providing an understanding about the online automotive fraud and how to guard against it. Perpetrators of this fraud prey on both buyers and sellers of automobiles online, though buyers are the most often affected.

What iYogi has to say:
"While a good deal is often difficult to resist, especially when it comes to buying an automobile. The Internet, while offering a wide choice and many genuine deals, is also filled with scammers waiting to dupe customers of their money," says Vishal Dhar, President of Marketing and co-founder iYogi. "One must be even more diligent when buying a car online as one would when buying a car from the neighborhood dealership in order to avoid falling prey to a scam."

Types of online automotive fraud:
Luxury cars and sports vehicles accompanied by attractive photographs are put up for sale on a website, using the details lifted from an authentic automobile site to make the prospects look quite credible. In other cases, regular cars are advertised at extremely attractive prices. Often, the fraudster posing as seller includes a sob story too, explaining the need to sell the car at such throwaway price. If you get taken in and e-mail the 'seller', you would be told to pay the shipping charges, as the car is located overseas. If you wire transfer funds, as per the directions of the fraudster, the seller would vanish as soon as he got his hands on your money.

The online automotive fraud also works the other way round, to fool genuine sellers. In this case, a fraud who poses as buyer e-mails the seller about his intention to buy the car. He agrees to pay more than the price of the car by check; so that shipping charges can be covered. The "buyer" then asks the seller to refund the excess amount. The seller ships the car, and also sends the refund amount, when he cashes the check from the buyer. But the check bounces, and the buyer disappears from the scene altogether!

The third kind of online automotive fraud involves a buyer who seeks to check out the accident record of an advertised vehicle, which he seems to like. As soon as the seller provides the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for the purpose; the buyer vanishes from the scene. He would now use the VIN to make fake documents for a stolen car, in order to sell it.

What you can do about it:
Do not go in for unrealistically good deals - there is sure to be a catch.

Select an escrow service linked to an established auction site. Never believe in sellers who insist on using a particular escrow service.
Inspect the website offering the deal, and check for poor grammar in communications.

Rely on your intuition. If anything appears amiss, go ahead with thorough questioning. Crooks generally back out at the least indication of suspicion.
