Tanker Overturn and Explosion Damaged Road 91- Repaired Using FlexSet

A tanker truck, loaded with 8,800 gallons of gasoline, overturned and exploded, on the Memorial Day. The maintenance crews began to repair the pavement between Eastbound 91 and the Southbound 71 , to facilitate the opening of other lanes to Eastbound 91 traffic. The emergency repairs were carried out using Roklin Systems Inc.'s FlexSet product, for a quick and long-lasting repair.

Lake Forest, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/30/2010 -- A tanker truck exploded and closed one of Southern California's busiest freeways for more than eight hours, creating havoc for hundreds of thousands of commuters and motorists trying to start their Memorial Day weekend. Starting about 10:30 a.m., traffic backed up for miles in Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino counties after the truck, loaded with 8,800 gallons of gasoline, overturned and was left to burn in the eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway in Corona.

According to CHP dispatcher Jon Twenty, a total of six cars were involved in the wreck that cut off one of the only arteries between Orange and Riverside counties. Caltrans maintenance crews set up emergency closures on the Eastbound 91 and the Southbound 71 leading onto the 91. A multi-agency command post was established and the group decided to let the nearly 9,000 gallons of gasoline burn itself out.Once the tanker had burned itself out damage assessment and clean up began. After the crew determined that the wreckage was cooled down by placing water on it, wreckers moved in to remove the large debris.

Next HazMat and Caltrans maintenance crews moved in to clean up and expose the pavement underneath all the burnt debris. Maintenance divisions set up immediate emergency response for traffic control and delivered lighting equipment in case repairs lasted until nighttime. Once the fire was out and before all debris was removed maintenance crews began to repair the outside edge of the pavement in the #3 lane in order to expedite the opening of other lanes to Eastbound 91 traffic. The westbound 91 lanes - heading toward Orange County - reopened shortly before 3 p.m.There was significant damage with spalling from 3" to 5" deep extending quite a distance. Once the initial clean up was performed Maintenance staffing began the emergency repairs using Roklin Systems Inc.'s FlexSet product.

FlexSet is designed for quick and long-lasting concrete repair. FlexSet buckets were mixed up and applied, filling in the damaged area quickly. The damaged concrete repairs were completed and cured by 8:20 PM and all lanes were opened to traffic at approximately 8:50 PM.The 91 is one of the most congested highways in Southern California . It is also the only major corridor available between Orange and Riverside counties. During the typical workweek, motorists make more than 300,000 trips a day on the freeway - a flow mostly heading west in the morning and east for the evening commute.

Asphalt Welder 'Asphalt Repair Product' Now in Cartridge Format

Lake Forest, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/07/2010 -- Roklin Systems Inc, manufacturer of the top polyurethane products for asphalt repair, has launched the cartridge version of 'Asphalt Welder'. Coupled with a hand operated dual cartridge gun, Asphalt Welder promises to be the first choice for maintenance engineers, handymen and those looking to do asphalt repairs themselves.

Maintenance Engineers, handymen and even do-it-yourselfers can now repair minor asphalt cracks quickly and simply. Roklin Systems Inc.'s Asphalt Welder was recently released in cartridge format. Available for use with a hand-operated dual-cartridge gun, Asphalt Welder for hairline cracks can be purchased directly through Roklin's web site.

Polyurethane repair products withstand vibration, heavy traffic loads, and thermal movement Long-time users of polyurethane asphalt repair products will enjoy the ease and flexibility of the new format. Asphalt Welder adheres to and seals asphalt cracks, repairing damage and strengthening the Asphalt. The thin high-strength polymer formula flows into cracks, penetrating the damaged area. It seals and waterproofs, protecting against freeze/thaw cycles that increase cracks sizes. Rough surfaces can be smoothed out with a high-traction surface.

Sealing asphalt cracks can be done simply using Asphalt Welder in a cartridge format. Make sure the crack is clean and free of moisture. Snap cartridge into cartridge gun, attach static mixer to the tip and squeeze Asphalt Welder directly into the crack. Use a scraper or straight-edge to smooth the Asphalt Welder out. Sprinkle topping sand over repair. Wipe up any excess material and allow to dry for 30 minutes. Now the crack is filled and ready for use.

For larger cracks or when a longer working time is needed FloMix and PolyFlex DS are available. PolyFlex DS is a polymer formerly known as Dopey Soup. PolyFlex DS works well in Control Joints or Traffic loops. When greater flexibility is needed PolyFlex can be used with no added sand. FloMix can be used to fix potholes and alligatored asphalt. FlexSet and Concrete Welder are used to repair concrete potholes and cracks. Asphalt Welder can be used for asphalt repair and is also available other colors on special order.

Asphalt cartridges fit into an EHD 3337 Hand Operated Dual Cartridge Gun. It uses 3/8" case-hardened rods and cam. All three rods push the washers for added ease of dispensing product. It is supplied with a side handle for added stability which can be used on either side. Once a cartridge is installed in the cartridge gun, a static mixer can be attached to the tip of the cartridge. Roklin's disposable static mixers are quick and efficient for one-time use.

The Static Mixer eliminates the common problem of materials setting up too quickly and clogging your equipment. The Static Mixer has mixing tubes that eliminate this problem by transporting the A and B materials separately into the mixer. To clean, simply remove the mixer, throw it away and wipe the cartridge clean.

These polymer cartridges simplify crack repair in Asphalt. More affordable than most cartridge repair products available, Asphalt Welder can be ordered directly from the Roklin Web site with no delay in delivery. With no additional tools needed, cracks can be filled simply and quickly and repairs can be opened to foot or vehicular traffic in minutes, not days. Repairs done with Roklin's polyurethane repair products are safe to apply as well as durable and long-lasting.

Asphalt Welder is available for purchase through the Roklin web site at http://www.roklinsystems.com or call 1-888-FlexSet. Other concrete and asphalt repair materials for large and small repairs are also available.

Roklin's Polyurethane Repair Products Proving to Be Green

Lake Forest, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/22/2010 -- Several aspects of polyurethane road repair are helping the environment. Roklin's products do not release toxic vapors, and are inert when fully reacted. The repairs do not erode into chunks like asphalt and get into water run-off, do not have Volatile Organic Compounds like asphalt, and because there is no removal of damaged concrete or asphalt, do not contribute to landfills.

According to a report by the Riverside County Community Health Agency Department of Public Health, Office of lndustrial Hygiene conducted for a Hazmat Manager at Caltrans, Roklin's products FloMix, FlexSet and Concrete Welder are safe to breathe. "Sample results indicate that airborne MDl levels are well below the levels permitted under CAL-OSHA Standard Title 8, California code of Regulations (CCR) 5155."

In mixing Roklin's polyurethane asphalt and concrete repair products, an "a" side and a "b" side are combined to form a reaction that becomes solid. This solid polyurethane material is completely inert.

Repairs completed with Roklin's products are not subject to breakdown like asphalt. Asphalt and concrete are not able to withstand water exposure indefinitely. Many factors contribute to asphalt and concrete breakdown. Asphalt will break down into small particles that ultimately end up in water runoff.

"Organic and inorganic contaminants in stormwater runoff can impair receiving water quality and disrupt ecosystem health," stated a paper entitled "A Review of The Contaminants and Toxicity Associated With Particles in Stormwater Runoff," prepared for the California Department of Transportation by scientists from University of California, Irvine, University of California, Riverside, Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, and University of California, Davis. The paper states that potential contaminants in roadway runoff include suspended solids, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, indicator bacteria and pathogens, and deicing salts.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemical compounds that have high enough vapor pressures under normal conditions to vaporize and enter the atmosphere. Because of existence of VOCs in some forms of asphalt, Illinois EPA has regulations for the use of cutback asphalt in the ozone season. Because of asphalt's need for sealants, coatings, caulks, or other finishing products, emissions are often higher than that of just asphalt. Polyurethane repairs have no VOCs.

Not only are polyurethane road repair materials safe to apply but they do not contribute to landfills. Many standard asphalt and concrete repairs require dig-outs of damaged material. Damaged asphalt is sometimes re-used, but most often it ends up in a land-fill. Concrete that has been removed often finds the same fate. Using FloMix, FlexSet and Concrete Welder eliminates the need to remove damaged asphalt and concrete.

A polyurethane product doesn't automatically evoke visions of green or eco-friendly products but Roklin's products have proven themselves to be just that.

Roklin's Asphalt & Concrete Engineering Expert Answers Your Queries

Lake Forest, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/08/2010 -- Roklin Systems Inc. is pleased to announce the release of "Ask Ben," a column for Website visitors to ask our expert, Ben, asphalt or concrete engineering questions. Visitors to the site, http://www.roklinsystems.com can submit their questions related to concrete or asphalt repair or use. Ben's extensive experience makes him highly qualified to give advice in this area. Ben Ramirez is our asphalt and concrete repair advisor who is retired from Caltrans where he was previously the District Division Chief.

As District Division Chief (a position now called Deputy Director), Ben managed the largest district in California. While managing District 8 maintenance division, which covered Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, Ramirez had 600 employees working under him. In addition to his Caltrans experience, Ben took engineering classes in college. Ben particularly liked his civil engineering classes.

Ben is uniquely qualified to fill the role of our expert advisor because at Caltrans, he worked in three divisions. His 40-year Caltrans career began in the construction division, followed by the design division and finally the maintenance division. Ben also worked on highways while in the military. Ben began as an army reservist and then moved to the air force reserves where he worked on road maintenance with the base facility management department.

"My first seven years was in the construction division. I did small structure inspections, paving inspections, worked in the lab testing materials that were used in the building of freeways," Ramirez said. Ben learned a lot about materials in that position as he was involved in the testing of asphalt and concrete production, and the properties of those products. He made sure that all the materials met all the specifications, giving him tremendous exposure to products used on asphalt and concrete.

Ben's second seven years were spent working in the design division. "My primary focus was on designing freeways," Ramirez said. The freeway design process can be quite complicated and involves many levels to complete. According to Ben it can take up to 10 years on large projects.

Ben's next move was into maintenance engineering. After two years he became a region manager for Riverside. It was there that Ben was in charge of the maintenance for the Riverside County Freeways.

Working at Caltrans was a rewarding experience that eventually led to Ben's working at Roklin and now acting as the official "expert" on Roklin's Website. "A Roklin representative showed up and had a product. I was the type of person who was always looking for new ways of fixing the highways. I used Roklin's product and it worked. I kept in contact with the rep after I retired and eventually began working at Roklin," Ramirez said.

Visitors to Roklinsystems.com can type their questions directly into the Ask Ben box and submit their questions. The questions will be answered directly and if applicable to a broad range of users, posted directly on the site. The questions and answers will be catalogued on the site and can be found through a search on the site. This expert advice is unique because the responses will be Ben's opinion based on years of experience working with a variety of materials. The column will not be focusing primarily on Roklin's products, but on becoming the go-to site for accurate and effective expert advice.
