The Changing Face of PR Jobs

Birth of the ‘Media-Hub’

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/26/2010 -- PR may be at the cusp of its evolution says Major Players, the UK's leading creative industry recruiter. The digital boom, the birth of the media hub and the fall of the journalist may have sparked the beginnings of a new trend within the industry that could inevitably lead to a new focus for PR – content. So, is this really a new trend and if so what effect if any could this have upon how PR jobs are recruited in this changing landscape?

Birth of the 'Media-Hub'
Back in February of this year, Global PR giant Edelman hired Richard Sambrook, the former head of BBC News as 'Chief Content Editor' in a move to help its clients develop their digital presence further by focusing on quality content generation.

In a recent interview, Richard Edelman offered some insight into what he felt was happening within the industry and why the decision to hire Sambrook was made: "Every one of our clients needs to become a media company, to tell its own story and to do so, not just through podcasts or having employee bloggers but having an authoritative set of information that is easy to access by this ever evolving 24/7 world of media. We're not trying to create a substitute for media; we're trying to improve access to the corporate knowledge base."

Content content content
Tone, style, format – it all boils down to one thing, content. Whilst liaising with the press is an integral aspect of any PR role its importance is weakened by the decline in stature of the journalist. They are no longer the gatekeepers; this has been proven by the rise in digital media and the many redundancies faced by journalists during the economic downturn. As such, content generation is becoming an increasingly important skill to possess for the PR as it enables companies to bypass the journalism gauntlet, primarily where online content is concerned.

PR briefs appear to be containing more requests for candidates with the ability to generate quality content, as opposed to more emphasis upon media relations. Jon Gloyne, Major Players recruiter for PR jobs said: "I have noticed that over the past few months the job briefs we've been getting do place more emphasis on possessing the ability to write strong content; clients are more selective in terms of their recruitment process, particularly the larger agencies. Writing tests are becoming more stringent, but this shouldn't really be an issue for PRs as generally they should already have a strong writing ability."

Evolution of PR
So the PR talent has the capability, perhaps it's just a case of brushing up, particularly for those new to the industry. Jon continues: "I don't think that these adjustments will have any impact upon already established PRs, perhaps more with juniors and recent graduates. I'd suggest putting some extra-curricular work in to bump up your writing skills if you're new to the industry. Work experience placements with publishing houses and PR firms would be a good start."

These new developments could offer tremendous scope to candidates looking for , the likelihood of new content driven teams being set up within agencies or even in-house is higher due to these new advancements in communication channels. The 'dark side' may be evolving once more.

Creative Industry Sees Shortage of Digital Talent Across Creative Services Jobs

London, England-- (SBWIRE) -- 06/07/2010 -- Major Players, the UK's leading creative recruiter, reports that the industry is currently experiencing a skills shortage for experienced talent to fill digital production and project management jobs.

Karine Lionnet, Major Players head of recruitment for creative services jobs (including production, project manager jobs and creative artworker jobs) said: "The market for creative services jobs has definitely changed over the last couple of years. With the digital explosion in full swing, the demand for tech savvy talent has led to the best candidates being snapped up, leaving traditional agencies and talent struggling to make the move into the digital job space."

So how can the industry bridge the talent gap? Karine advises of a few options for both candidates and businesses working in a traditional space.

Remember what it was like to be hungry? Just starting out and willing to do anything for a chance? There are loads of talented digital natives coming out of uni who are bursting with enthusiasm and itching to put their skills to use in the digital job sphere. Investing in grad talent now could bring big dividends in future once you're equipped with a team that sits on the cutting edge of the online space.

Look elsewhere Agencies should also be looking outside the industry for talent with transferable skills. How many potential candidates are out there working in project management jobs in a clientside environment that could bring great digital thinking to an agency with a small amount of re-training? People in producer jobs working in broadcast across a multitude of media platforms could also be an untapped area of resource for forward thinking agencies. Traditional project managers can bring a wealth of talent and experience to any role and making the leap to digital won't be much of a stretch.

Digitise your skill set If you're in a traditional production job or project manager role, now would be a great time to start investing in your digital skill set. Nothing is as valuable as on the job training, so if there's already a digital team at your agency, perhaps spending a couple mornings a week shadowing one of them could help you add another string to your bow while giving your employer the leverage to take on ever more digital projects. If you're thinking of looking into some courses, have a look around the web for Agile and Prince 2 training.

Retention Should Be the Prime Focus of PR Agencies in 2010 Says Leading Creative Recruiter

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/07/2010 -- Staff retention and potential increases in salary brackets while recruiting for PR jobs at senior level should be the prime focus of any PR agencies moving forward in 2010 says Major Players, the UK's leading creative, PR and marketing recruiter.

Davina Forbes, Major Players recruiter for PR jobs said: "What a difference a year can make. In 2009, candidates were prepared to take pay cuts, move sideways, work longer hours – anything to hold onto the jobs that seemed to hang precariously on the edge. But this year, no sooner has the economy taken its first tentative steps towards recovery, everyone's clamouring for more money, more progression, more everything. Despite a smattering of redundancies in 2009, top tier candidates working in PR jobs at Senior Account Manager / Account Director level know full well they're in short supply and they want the packages that come with scarcity."

The company is already seeing increases in salary requirements from candidates actively seeking new jobs in public relations. These talented individuals have not seen a pay rise in 18 months and with experience beyond their levels due to promotion freezes, they're looking forward to make up for this. Many of the recruiter's top candidates are fielding more than one offer at a time, resulting in bidding wars where agencies throw more and more benefits their way to tempt them across.

Davina adds, "Clients wishing to retain their staff in 2010, especially in the public relations and event management job sector should definitely bear this in their minds. People may already be getting itchy feet and hitting the PR job boards – especially if salaries at their level in the market are picking up and they're being left behind. If you have anyone in your public relations staff who has been at the same level for over 18 months without a pay rise, perhaps now is the time to think about dangling a few enticements their way?"

If you're looking to add some new superstars to your PR or communications team, Davina Forbes can be contacted by email here, or by calling 020 7845 7266.

Digital Explosion Exposing Gaps in Skill Sets Reports Leading Creative Industry Recruiter

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/07/2010 -- Major Players, the UK's leading creative and marketing recruiter reports that specialist developer roles are becoming increasingly in demand as the digital jobs sector continues to expand rapidly. In some cases, this is leading to skills shortages across the board. Of the recruiter's extensive developer database, only 1% have the necessary skills to take advantage of the growing need for Facebook developers.

Borz Farahani, Major Players recruiter for digital technical roles including developer jobs, DBAs, IAs, web analysts and systems admin jobs commented: "With the digital landscape changing so fast and clients wanting more for their money, it pays for developers to keep their skill set as sharp as a tack. To help our candidates focus on what's in demand, we've outlined some of the areas in the digital technical job sector where we're seeing a lot of movement."

According to Borz, the most in-demand developer jobs are:

Facebook Developer Jobs: "Social gaming is only getting bigger (Farmville anyone?) and our clients are snapping up Facebook developers as fast as we can supply them."

How to get the skills: Get to grips with the Facebook API and FBML (Facebook Markup Language) and you're on your way.

Front-end developer Jobs: "If you're not up with JavaScript, you need to be."

How to get the skills: If you're looking for a front end developer role, make sure you can hand code in JavaScript without the use of libraries such as jQuery. This is vital if you want to win the hottest digital development jobs.

Also, start looking at HTML5 / CSS3. Depending on market take up over the next 12 months, this could have a huge impact on the web, possibly overtaking Flash for popularity. Check out YouTube on the Google Chrome browser – they're already trialling HTML5.

Creative Developer Jobs: "Got an eye for great design? Understand the user experience? Like I said earlier, our clients want talent that can deliver more for their money. Developers that understand both form and function are always going to get the edge over standard coders."

Get the skills: Get on some short design courses, talk to colleagues in design jobs, check out great websites (Adobe's site of the day is a good place to start) - and start getting creative. Develop some mock ups or take a look at your previous projects and see where you can improve on usability and design.

Borz adds: "While we're on the subject of creativity, it's worth mentioning that in this super competitive market, having a good portfolio is absolutely key. Be sure to include live and up-to date work and include a secure area to upload sample code where potential employers can see your handiwork."

In-House Design Roles on the Rse As Companies Strive to Cut Costs During Recession

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/07/2010 -- Major Players, the UK's leading creative recruiter, reports that demand for in-house design roles has been steadily increasing since 2009, with print designers among those finding the most success.

When looking at the spread of appointments, most in-house design roles have been permanent, but there has undoubtedly been a heightened requirement for freelance designer roles as well. In many cases this has been because headcounts could not be increased due to company wide recruitment freezes. However, this overall increase across the sector came as a result of companies requesting designers to meet a completely new need. They need specialists.

Phil Braham, Major Players specialist consultant for design jobs commented: "With companies cash tight, the logical choice is for them to bring more provisions in-house, providing an on-tap resource. Of course, in 2009 some companies chose to reduce head count and closed their studios altogether in an effort to cut costs. The future will tell whether this short term gain will equate to actual cost savings."

What's most interesting is that the growth of in-house studios has not been sector specific. The company has worked successfully with every sector including retail, corporate, public sector, arts organisations and charity. Furthermore, designers of all kinds have been in demand, from conceptual Art Director roles to 3D, environmental, structural, typographer, experiential, product, packaging, and of course - digital design roles. As a reflection of the volume of digital briefs that Major Players has received, the company now has a dedicated in house digital design job specialist.

Importantly for designers, clients are trying to add to the high level of creativity they received from their design agencies. They are looking for inspirational thoughts, intriguing concepts and pristine execution from those in graduate design jobs all the way through to creative directors. And the best thing is that designers of all disciplines are embracing the experience and understanding that working client-side can still provide great opportunities for career progression.

Since 2007, Major Players has had a dedicated division set up to service the recruitment needs of in-house studios and their designers. If you're looking to add some new superstars to your design team, Phil Braham can be contacted by email here, or by calling 020 7845 7250.

Candidates looking for new opportunities in design and creative can take a look at the Major Players website for the latest design jobs here, including digital design jobs, art director, visualiser and art worker roles.

Administration Jobs Double: Receptionist Jobs, Business Services Roles on a Roll

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/06/2010 -- Major Players, the UK's leading creative recruiter, reports that permanent front-of-house briefs (such as admin jobs, secretarial, reception and PA jobs) have doubled since the last quarter of 2009, as companies across the marketing and creative sectors recruit support staff, encouraging speculation of further recovery in the coming months.

Fiona Wood, director of recruitment for business services roles at Major Players commented: "During the last year when urgent core cuts were needed to help cash flow, administration roles were often the first to go. In the first quarter of 2010, there has been a dramatic increase in briefs for key organisational roles such as reception and admin jobs. This suggests companies are re-building their infrastructure ahead of expected new business wins and additions to core business functions such as creative, production and project management roles."

Looking at the number of briefs received from October to New Year (104), compared with those from New Year to April (206), these administrative roles have risen by almost 100%. In the same two quarters, Major Players has seen a 12% rise across all other sectors (creative jobs, PR, advertising and design jobs), and anticipates a further increase in job briefs over the coming weeks.

Further hopes for recovery were highlighted in a separate job satisfaction survey conducted by Major Players across candidates in creative and marketing roles to reveal some of the reasons for their current job search or career change. From a sample of some 400 applicants, some surprising answers were revealed, with a large proportion (44%) indicating that their position had not been affected by the adverse economic conditions. The majority of respondents also appeared content with their current salary (30%), working hours (60%) and holiday entitlement (53%). The full results to the survey are available here.

Fiona Wood added: "The increase in briefs alone is cause for optimism, but gaining such healthy results from an industry wide survey of our candidates is just further reason to believe that things may be finally looking up for the industry and the economy as a whole."

If you're looking to add some new superstars to your support team, Fiona Wood can be contacted by email here, or by calling 020 7845 7232.
CEO Jack Gratton said: "The checks we have in place are focused on making sure we're compliant with Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations, Asylum and Immigration legislation, and Data Protection guidelines."

He added, "This not only protects our clients from potential legal problems, but we're proud to say that as a result of our thorough vetting procedures, an industry-topping* 8 out of 10 candidates placed by us in Marketing jobs, Creative, Research & Insight and PR jobs make long term commitments to their employers."

The following standard checks performed on each and every candidate:

• Face to Face Interviews: Each and every candidate is interviewed by Major Players prior to them ever being put forward for a job in the creative industry. A specialist consultant conducts the interview, identifying what the candidate wants from their career, their aspirations and background, their reason for seeking work, as well as their technical experience and interest in the role and organisation.

• Qualification Check: Where a qualification is necessary or essential for the role, the company requires original documentation to be provided at the interview stage which is then scanned and uploaded to the system.

• Referencing: Each candidate is required to provide reference points for organisations they have worked with in the last two years. Those applying for creative and design jobs are required to provide examples of their portfolio during the interview. Major Players utilises a comprehensive reference template which investigates competencies and performance of the candidate, which is sent to nominated reference points. Companies are verified for their authenticity. Psychometric profiling and competency testing can also be performed if required.

• Right to Work in the UK: All candidates must provide original documentation at interview which allows Major Players to verify their right to work in the UK. This might include the need for a valid working VISA.

• Photo Identification Check: Photo identification, such as a passport, is required at the interview stage. These are scanned, signed and dated by the consultant for the company's records.

Without performing these primary checks, Major Players will not submit an individual for a client interview. Karine Lionnet, head of recruitment for creative services, project management, production and design jobs said, "This meticulous screening process takes the hard work out of recruitment for our clients and ensures that our candidate pool is made up of only the industry's best talent. It's all part of the reason why so many of our clients keep us on their Preferred Supplier List."

2010 Salary Survey for Jobs Across The Creative Industry

Major Players today released its annual salary survey covering the entire scope of jobs across the creative and marketing industries. The much anticipated report shows that while salaries have generally maintained similar levels to 2009, some sectors have seen a rise by as much as 10%.

London, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/31/2010 -- Findings by job sector:

Account Management & Planning Jobs: Account Executive and Account Manager level jobs are in demand due to a scarcity of talent and lack of grad recruitment during the recession. Above-The-Line (ATL) agencies are looking to bring on board a wider range of skills and experience - candidates across digital, integrated and PR roles are increasingly in demand.

Business Services Jobs: The support market has split into several different sectors and candidates looking for PA, HR, secretarial and admin jobs will need to stay flexible and able work across multi-faceted roles to stay competitive.

Creative & Design Jobs: As we saw last year, companies are increasingly diversifying, with digital roles continuing to integrate across ATL, Integrated, Design and Branding. Those candidates with experience in digital roles will continue to find the most success.

Creative Services Jobs: Marker visualisers and artworkers who can cross over to retouching and design roles will remain in healthy demand. Project managers who can bring a creative flair to their role and production talent that can work across all media are also in short supply.

Digital Jobs: 2010 will see the sector consolidate its place as the favourite of companies looking for accurate ROI and measurable results. The talent pool is growing ever larger but as always, good candidates will always find themselves being scooped up for the best digital jobs.

Marketing Jobs: Despite the turmoil of the economic recession, salary levels across marketing roles have remained fairly level. Incremental growth is starting to drive new hires and we're still seeing skills shortages at senior manager and Board Director level – specifically across digital roles.

PR & Comms Jobs: Consumer PR jobs saw a rise of 10% across all levels, reflecting a desire for agencies to hang on to remaining staff following several rounds of redundancies throughout 2009. Digital PR jobs saw a rise of just 5%, as agencies strive to keep a broad base of expertise in the growing social media sector.

Research, Insight & Analysis Jobs: Clients are increasingly looking for candidates who are able to add value by providing insights into new methods. This was especially prevalent across digital research roles as more agencies moved collection methods online, while in-house teams focused more on web analytics.

Sponsorship, Experiential & Events Jobs: This year, sampling will remain popular as brands continue to want maximum ROI for their efforts but live events jobs will start to re-appear again after a tough economic period that perhaps hindered these types of events being activated.

As 2010 continues, Major Players expects remuneration packages to increase in line with the nation's confidence in economic recovery, fuelling hopes of an end to the downturn once and for all.

Creatives Getting Into Bed With PR Agencies

Looking for a great creative job? Check your nearest PR agency. Research by Major Players (the UK’s leading Creative Recruitment agency) has revealed a substantial increase (200%) in client requirements for Planners and Creative Directors over the last 18 months.

London, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/18/2009 -- Looking for a great creative job? Check your nearest PR agency. Research by Major Players (the UK's leading Creative Recruitment agency) has revealed a substantial increase (200%) in client requirements for Planners and Creative Directors over the last 18 months. As the economic climate improves and PR agencies strive to stay a step ahead of their experiential, event and marketing rivals, this trend may soon include juniors and maybe even graduate roles.

Lorraine Barker, Head of PR at Major Players said: "To keep from being drowned out in an increasingly crowded media space, PR agencies are evolving. Creative Directors are being drafted in to inject fresh thinking and bring a new dimension to campaigns, while Planners are delivering consumer insights and developing rigorous strategic frameworks to underpin the big idea." The result is a focused PR offering that stays on brand, on tone and most importantly – makes people stand up and take notice.

The newer roles are different from the traditional planner or creative you might find in an advertising agency - and while some PR agencies seem happy to consider above the line candidates, the main demand is for talent that can think big, but be practical in their application of creative ideas. Equally, many above the line candidates often feel that moving into a PR environment will restrict their role.

Lorraine added: "We've found that the most successful among those we've placed are candidates who have had a high level of involvement in the creative or strategic planning process - not only candidates from account planning, but account handling, research & insight and new business. However, it's equally about the candidate's hunger and passion for all things media and the latest comms channels, trends and cultures."

Major Players is perfectly positioned to support this new growth area. As the industry's leading creative recruiter, they work with some of the UK's most exciting and forward thinking PR agencies. To find out more, call 020 7845 7236 or email Lorraine here.
