Modern and Postpandemic-Friendly with Natural Light, Brixmor's Newly Remodeled Offices Include SONEX AFS Ceiling and Wall System and SONEX Linear Absorbers

Minneapolis, MN -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/01/2021 -- Located in the Plymouth Square retail shopping center in Plymouth Township, Pa., the newly renovated 45,000-square foot Brixmor office went from being a virtually unrentable basement space to a dream office. In addition to installing glass curtainwalls on two sides of the building to allow natural light into the space, the design team created an inviting environment for approximately 200 employees. Planned for postpandemic employee safety and comfort, the office was designed with touchless doors, larger work stations and alluring amenity spaces. In addition to making sure that the facility had good air quality, sound quality was also addressed with SONEX® Linear Absorbers and SONEX AFS Acoustic Plaster System from pinta acoustic, inc.

JKRP Architects had been working with the previous owner of the shopping center on an updated design for the building when Brixmor, which owns and operates nearly 400 retail centers across the country, purchased it. Once a basement bowling alley, Brixmor wanted to transform the lower levels of the space into offices. To get as much light into the space as possible, JKRP Architects updated the design to add glass facades on the north and west sides of the building. And interior design firm, D2 Groups, LLC, transformed three very separate levels into one split-level office space.

"The building was built in the 1960s with thinner slab construction. It was not built with acoustics in mind," says Devon Gray, project manager for JKRP Architects. "The new Brixmor office space is located directly beneath an REI retail store where rolling carts sounded like a freight train. We knew we needed to bring in an acoustical consultant to perform acoustical testing and make recommendations."

"All too often, clients don't put acoustics in during initial design and construction," says Josh Wilson, senior project designer from D2 Groups. "They wait until it's a problem. Before the Brixmor space was remodeled, an acoustician from Metropolitan Acoustics in Philadelphia provided preconstruction testing and guidance on where acoustical treatments would be needed."

The interior design team from D2 Groups contacted pinta's representative, Jim Kolcun, at Applied Acoustical Group. After reviewing options, D2 Groups recommended SONEX Linear Absorbers to be installed above the workstations and in the cafeteria. The absorbers were suspended from the ceiling to create an attractive design element while maintaining the industrial open ceiling look. In addition, pinta's SONEX AFS Acoustic Plaster Ceiling and Wall System was installed in the boardroom and other meeting rooms.

"We used pinta acoustic's SONEX Linear Absorbers in another nearby project a few years ago," says Wilson. "Brixmor's team walked through that facility and were impressed by the look and function of the absorbers."

"Our general contractor did the fit-out of the office we toured with D2 Group," says Lucas Heverly, senior project manager, construction at Brixmor. "In addition to getting favorable feedback about performance from our general contractor and the occupants of the space, we liked the look of the baffles. When we were doing construction, the sound was reverberating off the glass curtainwalls, concrete and other hard surfaces. Once SONEX Linear baffles were installed, there was a noticeable difference with less echo."

D2's interior designer wanted a grid element hanging over the kitchen in the cafeteria. To build the grid, the team needed something constructable and wanted to use acoustic material to absorb sound reverberating off the hard surfaces in the space, including glass, polished concrete and exposed metal ceiling deck. Grey SONEX Linear Absorbers were used to create the grid-style pattern that blends well with the ceiling and creates an interesting design element. To absorb sound above the work stations, SONEX Linear Absorbers in 10- and 12-inch heights were hung in rows to create movement and interest without being visually overwhelming.

D2 was looking for ways to integrate the Brixmor brand that includes a distinctive X graphic. In the boardrooms and three other meeting spaces, the interior design team developed a ceiling design that played off the branding. The ceiling included recessed LED lights along a magnetic black bar. This lighting treatment was surrounded by SONEX AFS Acoustic Plaster System, which provides a monolithic look like gypsum board along with the added benefit of excellent sound absorption.

"We knew we needed an acoustical treatment in the boardroom and other meeting rooms, "says Heverly. "The boardroom has two glass walls and is large to accommodate a sizable group of people. It includes web conferencing equipment and speakers in the ceiling and walls. We needed to make sure that there weren't any sound issues during important meetings and video conferences. SONEX AFS minimizes the reverberation in the room to maximize speech intelligibility."

Across from another shopping center that the company owns, the new Brixmor office integrates two divisions into the same building for better collaboration and future growth. The office has been Fitwel certified and is being reviewed for LEED certification.

SONEX AFS Acoustic Plaster Ceiling and Wall System typically adheres to gypsum substrates, SONEX AFS consists of single- or double-sided fiberglass-mesh laminated to WILLTEC™ open-cell melamine foam panels, offered in a variety of thicknesses. Joints between panels are taped and finished, then base and finish coats of PA-85 plaster are trowel-applied, creating smooth monolithic walls or ceilings. Sound energy travels through the acoustically porous finish and gets absorbed into the WILLTEC panel core beyond, delivering exceptional NRC ratings within interior spaces.

SONEX Linear baffles absorb unwanted sound reflecting off glass, gypsum, polished concrete floors and other hard surfaces. SONEX Linear provides highly customizable options including sizes, profiles and colors. Made from pinta acoustic's Class 1 fire-rated WILLTEC foam, the baffles are available in lengths up to 96 inches (2438 mm) with depths from 6 to 24 inches (152 to 610 mm). SONEX Linear Absorbers are easy to install using channel trim and acouSTIC™ adhesive.

Pinta Acoustic's WHISPERWAVE and SONEX Valueline Panels Absorb Sound and Add a Flowing Wave Design to Northwest ISD Aquatic Center

Minneapolis, MN -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/21/2021 -- Located in Justin, Tex., the Northwest ISD (NISD) Aquatic Center is a multiuse facility that includes a 71-yard (65-meter) stretch competition pool, four-lane 25-yard (27.34-meter) practice pool, seating for 850 guests and a full-service sports medicine rehabilitation center. To improve the user experience and minimize acoustical issues that are common to indoor pools, pinta acoustic's WHISPERWAVE™ and SONEX® Valueline acoustic panels in custom colors were installed in the new 80,000-square foot (7432-square meter) facility.

Prior to the opening of NISD Aquatic Center in January 2021, the school district rented facilities in other communities for swimming and diving, which required travel outside of the area and limited practice times. Built to accommodate five high school swim teams, the aquatic center is located on the central campus to provide convenient access to students and the community.

Most people have experienced the echo in indoor pools that leads to difficulty hearing and understanding swimmers, coaches and lifeguards, which can pose a safety risk. The pinta acoustic products absorb sound energy from coaching, raised voices from enthusiastic participants and spectators, buzzers and music. WHISPERWAVE and SONEX Valueline panels prevent sound waves from bouncing between hard planes such as concrete, glass and the water surface, which is a significant source of sound reverberation.

Lauren Hoyle, RID, from Huckabee architectural firm in Fort Worth, Tex., researched acoustic products that could withstand high humidity in the aquatic center. She presented a single combination of products to the building owner: pinta's WHISPERWAVE and SONEX Valueline panels. Effective and visually appealing, the acoustic products are naturally resistant to mold, fungus and bacterial growth, making them ideal for an indoor pool facility.

"I wanted them to look like a wave," says Hoyle. "In addition to offering a product with fluid lines, pinta was able to provide custom colors to represent flowing water. Tyler Luttrell from Architectural Materials, Inc., pinta's Texas distributor, and pinta's team were very responsive with answers to questions and pricing. The facility owner liked the design a lot and chose the purchase and installation of the panels."

A top bright-blue color band of 30 SONEX Valueline panels was installed, using pinta's acouSTIC™ adhesive, above the tall windows on the wall and opposing accordion glass partitions in the practice pool area. Additionally, 198 48" by 96" (1219 by 2184 mm) WHISPERWAVE panels in four acoustic-coated colors, including white and bright blue with two lighter shades of blue in the same color family were installed in the competition pool area.

WHISPERWAVE and SONEX Valueline panels are made from lightweight, nonfibrous, open-cell expanded melamine WILLTEC™ foam. Both products pass Class A per ASTM E84 flame spread and smoke density standards, as well as CAN ULCS-102. Options include natural white or grey as well as standard, premium and custom water-based acoustic-coated colors. Offered in most panel shapes and sizes up to 48" by 96" (1219 by 2184 mm) with 2" and 3" (51 and 76 mm), and custom thicknesses, WHISPERWAVE panels provide superior acoustic absorption across all sound frequencies.

Featuring a softly sculpted surface pattern, SONEX Valueline panels are affordable and easy to install with acouSTIC adhesives. SONEX Valueline panels are available in 24" by 48" (610 mm by 1219 mm), and custom sizes and shapes up to 48" by 98" (1219 mm by 2438 mm). Thickness options include 1½", 1 7/8" or 2½" (38 mm, 48 mm or 64 mm) and custom thicknesses.

Pinta Acoustic's SONEX Valueline Panels Help Improve Safety at Western Technical College's Sparta Shooting Range

Minneapolis, MN -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/20/2021 -- To expand its training facilities, Western Technical College moved its shooting range from a classroom building to an existing well-built storage building on the school's 160-acre campus near Sparta, Wis. Eliminating the frequent sound of gunfire in a classroom building and reducing sound leakage were among the primary reasons for moving the range. SONEX® Valueline Panels from pinta acoustic, inc. were installed to absorb sound reverberation and reduce decibel (dB) levels inside the building while minimizing noise outside the facility. pinta acoustic products, including SONEX Valueline and SONEX Classic panels, have been installed in many shooting ranges, including law enforcement, military, commercial and residential gun ranges.

The LEED® Silver Certified Sparta Public Safety Training Facility consists of indoor and outdoor firing ranges and a forensic investigation laboratory. The multifaceted building was designed to provide scenario-based training and is available for rent. Extra-wide doors enable vehicles to be placed in the building, and alternating flashing lights can simulate traffic stop conditions in the shooting range. In addition to the college's students, the shooting range is used by various agencies for training. More convenient to access than the range at nearby Ft. McCoy, the agencies renting the facility include U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

"We worked with Savage Range Systems to construct the indoor shooting range, and safety is always very important. Charles Nester of Savage Range Systems recommended using pinta's SONEX Valueline

Panels to absorb noise," said Jay McHenry, director of facilities at Western Technical College. "Nester's team is very experienced and can help facility managers and owners achieve their goals while saving money that can be used for other purposes."

Savage Range Systems glued the SONEX Valueline to ¾-inch plywood sheets in overhead containment baffles that consist of the plywood, an air gap and AR5000 steel, a high-carbon, abrasion-resistant steel alloy. The baffles protect the building from ricocheting bullet. A bullet can go through the foam, but not the steel; the baffle will capture any deflected bullet that hasn't found its way to the front of the range.

pinta's water-based acouSTIC™ adhesive was used to install the SONEX Valueline panels to the plywood. The baffles hang from chains that are attached to trusses, and were installed starting about three feet from the firing position, then spaced out down the range. The acoustic material absorbs sound energy and reduces the reverberation time of sound within the building, lowering the dB level inside the range as well as outdoors.

"People in higher education like to share their observations and concerns, but I can honestly say there have been no complaints or concerns about noise regarding the Public Training Facility," McHenry says. "Of course, people using the shooting range still use high-performance hearing protection. Outside the building, you can hear 'pop, pop, pop' as handguns and rifles up to .223 caliber are fired, but it's not at the level of an alarming sound."

Sound produced by gunfire is deafening outdoors, and when the acoustical energy it produces is confined to a small indoor space such as a firing range, it gets even louder. The noise can reach levels as much as 10 times greater than those experienced in outdoor ranges. SONEX Valueline helps eliminate this indoor range effect by absorbing sound energy that would otherwise build up to dangerous levels, causing serious discomfort and potentially even hearing damage.

A surprisingly small number of acoustical panels go a long way in most shooting ranges. Typically, a range requires an amount of foam equal to the square footage of its ceiling. The foam is divided between the ceiling and walls for the most efficient sound absorption. This will normally reduce the amount of acoustical energy in the range by an amazing 85 percent.

Part of managing acoustics includes good construction of the walls, ceiling, conduit, and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. McHenry upgraded the building's HVAC system to capture smoke and lead dust.

SONEX® Valueline Panels have a softly sculpted surface pattern and are made from lightweight, nonfibrous, open-cell expanded melamine WILLTEC™ foam. SONEX Valueline panels are affordable and easy to install with acouSTIC™ adhesives. Standard SONEX Valueline panels are available in 24" x 48" (610 mm x 1219 mm), and custom sizes and shapes up to 48" x 98" (1219 mm x 2438 mm). Typical thickness options include 1½", 1 7/8" or 2½" (38 mm, 48 mm or 64 mm) and custom thicknesses. SONEX Valueline panels have noise reduction coefficients (NRC) up to 1.05, and are available in natural white or light grey, and water-based acoustic coating in standard premium and custom colors.

SONEX Valueline panels are Class A per ASTM E 84 rated for flame spread and smoke density and pass CAN ULCS-102. These panels can directly support LEED® v4.0 and v4.1 Building Design and Construction (LEED BD+C) and LEED v4.0 and v4.1 Interior Design and Construction (LEED ID+C) projects.

pinta acoustic SONEX Linear Provides Color Saturation That Meets Interior Design Vision at Atmosphere's Showroom and WORKLAB

Minneapolis, MN -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/05/2018 -- SONEX ® Linear Custom Baffles from pinta acoustic add striking color in the downtown Minneapolis showroom and WORKLAB at Atmosphere Commercial Interiors. Design is a focus in the newly renovated Atmosphere office, which serves as a world-class showroom and flexible workspace for employees. Custom HPC-coated SONEX Linear Baffles reflect the carpet runner and complement the draperies with the added benefit of acoustic control.

In 2017, Atmosphere began a full renovation of two floors in the historic Young Quinlan building. The renovation included a 30,000-square foot (2787-square meter) WORKLAB and office furniture showroom that highlights the newest products, finishing and work environment. Incorporating residential and commercial features, the WORKLAB offers a balance between collaborative and individual spaces.

To mirror the color of the carpet runner on the ceiling, the design team initially considered fabric-wrapped baffles. More affordable, SONEX Linear was a superior choice because it could be custom coated to match Atmosphere's corporate aquamarine color.

"It's vital for us to maintain an updated look. The architect's design exposed the original terrazzo floor and opened up the front entrance with glass," says Susan Jakusz, operations manager at Atmosphere. "The design is ideal for the WORKLAB, which is also a beta workspace partnership between Steelcase and Microsoft. It combines technology and a unique creative work environment where many employees do not have designated desks and choose where they work."

The office is equipped with sensors to provide valuable insight into how the space is being used. Large monitors display available work areas.

In addition to offering a streamlined appearance, SONEX Linear Baffles absorb unwanted sound reflecting off glass, gypsum, terrazzo floors and other hard surfaces. SONEX Linear provides a streamlined appearance and highly customizable options including sizes, profiles and colors. Made from pinta acoustic's Class 1 fire-rated willtec ® foam, the baffles are available in lengths up to 96 inches (2438 mm) with depths from 6 to 24 inches (152 to 610 mm). SONEX Linear Baffles are easy to install using channel trim and acouSTIC adhesive.

Pinta Acoustic Ceiling Clouds Enhance the Industrial-Chic Aesthetics and Acoustics in PlayCore and Dero Office

Minneapolis, MN -- (ReleaseWire) -- 11/03/2017 -- The new PlayCore and Dero office, in the Northern Stacks business park in Minneapolis, has an open-plan, industrial-chic design with indoor bicycle parking and a climbing wall in the reception area. To absorb sound within the space, architect Brian Hunke, AIA from Mohagen Hansen, recommended pinta acoustic's BALANCE and WHISPERWAVE Ceiling Clouds.

PlayCore and Dero were in the heart of downtown for nearly 20 years. Many of the employees commute to work by bicycle, making the location of the new office essential. PlayCore provides innovative playground and recreational equipment to match the unique needs of each community it serves. Dero, a PlayCore company, designs and manufactures bike parking products.

"Easy access to major highways for shipping, rail transit and metro-connected bicycle trails for employee commuting were key considerations. Sustainability is also central to our businesses," says Andy Lageson, vice president and general manager of Dero. "Located near the Mississippi river trails, Northern Stacks was ideal for our new headquarters."

"To achieve an industrial-chic look, the PlayCore and Dero office space was designed with concrete floors, other hard surfaces and open areas," says Brian Hunke, AIA. "To minimize unwanted sound reflecting off the hard surfaces and traveling throughout the open spaces it needed acoustic absorbers. Having worked with pinta acoustic's products before, I knew they would have an affordable, attractive solution."

Hunke had visited the pinta acoustic booth at a local architectural trade show. He specified two of the products that he saw at the exhibition, BALANCE and WHISPERWAVE Ceiling Clouds.

The combined company office space has concrete floors, gypsum walls and exposed ceilings. The lobby features two stories of glass in the corner as well as a visitor bike parking area. To absorb sound reverberating off the hard surfaces in the lobby, two 42- by 96-inch (1067 by 2438 mm) WHISPERWAVE Ceiling Clouds are suspended over the reception desk. The 900-square foot (83.61-square meter) breakroom is separated with a half-wall that is adjacent to the climbing wall, conference room and lobby. An overhead glass door can be lowered to provide additional separation between the conference room and breakroom. Hung over the breakroom, 18 BALANCE Ceiling Clouds with dimensions of 46 by 46 inches (1168 by 1168 mm) help absorb sound within the space.

WHISPERWAVE Ceiling Clouds, Panels and Baffles provide design flexibility and exceptional acoustical control across all frequencies. Class 1 fire-rated and lightweight, WHISPERWAVE products are offered in standard and custom wave designs. These products are easy to install and are available in standard and custom dimensions in natural white and grey. WHISPERWAVE acoustical products can also be HPC-coated in standard, premium or custom colors.

BALANCE Ceiling Clouds provide acoustical control while maintaining the appearance of an open ceiling. Completely preassembled, BALANCE products are easy to suspend from any ceiling or roof deck and are ideal for open-office environments and loft spaces. BALANCE Ceiling Clouds are composed of a 15/16 inch (24 mm) thick WHITELINE® Panel with a lightweight aluminum frame. WHITELINE Panels feature fleece laminated to Class 1 fire-resistant willtec® foam. Panels are available in white, black or custom colors. Offered in natural aluminum and white, BALANCE frames are available with nonexposed or exposed 3/8 inch (10 mm)-wide flange around the perimeter.

Moonacy Music Room Delivers Studio-Quality Sound Without Sacrificing Design with Pinta Acoustic's Products

To achieve optimum acoustics, the design and engineering team incorporated FABRITEC Wall Panels and willtec® strips from pinta acoustic into the art and décor.

Minneapolis, MN -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/31/2015 -- When singer/songwriter Jan Edwards expanded her property in Plymouth, Minn., to include the Moonacy Music Room performance space, aesthetics, a state-of-the-art sound system and optimized acoustics were vital. Designed to represent the four elements—earth, water, air and fire—the Moonacy Music Room is a collaborative venue for songwriter workshops, video conferencing, house concerts, fund-raising for music-related nonprofits and private events. To achieve optimum acoustics, the design and engineering team incorporated FABRITEC Wall Panels and willtec® strips from pinta acoustic into the art and decor.

The concept for the room began to take shape when Edwards had purchased an 18- by 9-foot (5.48 by 2.74 m), colorful Native American painting created by Rabbett Before Horses Strickland, an Ojibwa artist from northern Wisconsin. Called The Right to Consciousness, this artwork was central to the space. The creative process evolved during a brainstorming session between Edwards, architect Alex Haecker and interior designers Shelly Reihl David and Carl David. Edwards introduced a magazine tear sheet with a quilted wall. This was the impetus behind what has been named the magic wall.

The magic wall contains nearly 400 squares of custom FABRITEC acoustical tiles wrapped in 11 different textured and colored fabrics. To add movement to the wall, Luke Nelson from Acoustic Vision recommended incorporating 19 Planar® digital screens intermixed with the acoustical panels. These digital screens were programmed to display atmospheric images, such as the murmuring of starlings or a rolling storm. The video images on the magic wall represent the element air.

The music room was designed with angled walls, exposed metal trusses, a shiplap ceiling that increases in elevation from 11 to 17 feet (3.35 to 5.18 m) and an epoxy-coated concrete floor. The wall behind the stage contains a 98-inch (2489 mm) digital display from Planar, flanked by large twin guitar cabinets made with glass and reclaimed wood from a tobacco barn in Virginia. Reclaimed wood was also used to build the stage and wide baseboards and wainscoting. To allow natural light in, the space includes a wall of windows opposite the stage. The wood of the stage and cabinets, and the wood instruments symbolize the element earth.

The shape of the space, along with many hard, reflective surfaces, posed acoustical challenges. To address them, Nelson brought in audio engineer and classically trained cellist Charles G. (Skip) Kahane from PGS/Broadcast Media Services. Kahane recommended pinta acoustic's FABRITEC Wall Tiles, willtec panels and willduct® HVAC ductwork thermal and sound insulation for the Moonacy Music Room.

"The increasing rise of the ceiling, and ending in a glass wall, gave the space a megaphone-like characteristic," explains Kahane. "In music venues, we typically treat the stage first and the wall opposing the stage second. We were unable to do that because of the guitar cabinets and large display on the stage and the facing glass wall."

To treat the space, Kahane specified 15.5- by 15.5- by 1-inch (394 by 394 by 25 mm) FABRITEC panels for the magic wall. These tiles were custom-wrapped in the materials selected by interior designer David. 10.375-inch (264 mm)-wide willtec strips, faced with a superwhite HPC coating, were directly applied using acouSTIC adhesive in a pattern to blend with the white shiplap ceiling. Additional 1.5-inch (38 mm)-thick willtec acoustical panels were nested in the frame behind the artwork using string tacked in a zigzag pattern across the back of the frame. Testing after acoustical treatment reveals a reverberation time of .74.

"We couldn't have done it without pinta acoustic's product," continues Kahane. "Fiberglass wall panels were not an option. The exceptional acoustical performance of FABRITEC and willtec and the ability to custom-cut the product in the field allowed for the freedom to provide a simple solution."

"Many of the FABRITEC panels were shipped from pinta acoustic with the custom fabric fully wrapped on the top and edges," says Devin Jackson, acoustical engineer and owner of Jackson Sound Management Productions. "Additional panels were supplied with the fabric secured only to the top. This allowed us to custom-cut the tiles to fit the ceiling and wall lines. Once cut to size, panels were finished by wrapping and adhering the fabric to the edges. Each tile was direct-applied to the wall using pinta's acouSTIC adhesive. The willtec strips on the ceiling were also cut in the field to fit around the metal tresses and other fixtures."

"The fourth element, fire, is depicted in the bar that was created by a local sculptor, James Lamis. Also a light display casts the image of fire onto the draperies behind the bar. Unique hanging light fixtures simulate charred tree branches," explains Edwards. "One of my favorite features is the aquarium that's on the same wall as the painting. It exhibits specimens of beautiful koi and a replica of the Moonacy Music Room on a cliff. The painting by Rabbett, aquarium and the powder room symbolize water."

Made of pinta's willtec foam core, FABRITEC Wall Panels offer outstanding acoustical performance, absorbing up to 85 percent of the sound directed toward them. Available in custom and standard sizes, FABRITEC panels are impact resistant and have a tackable surface. Select from hundreds of standard or custom fabrics, including Guilford, Maharam and others. FABRITEC Wall Panels are lightweight, making them easy to install with adhesive and/or hook and loop.

willtec foam is Class 1 fire-rated and available in natural white or light grey with an optional HPC coating in standard and custom colors. Panel sizes can be any dimension up to 48 by 96 inches (1219 by 2438 mm), and typical thicknesses range between 2 and 3 inches (51 and 76 mm). Custom shapes, colors and sizes are available.

willduct was also used to absorb background noise caused by HVAC fans and blowers. Resistant to mold and mildew, willduct passes UL 181, is easy to install in HVAC ductwork and provides thermal and sound insulation.
