DIGNIFYING DEMENTIA: a Caregiver's Struggle New ebook Now Launched

Cork, Irland -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/08/2011 -- Every seven seconds someone in the US is diagnosed with some form of dementia, according to some studies; according to others, there will be a staggering 81.1 million by 2040. It strikes without warning. In her book, DIGNIFYING DEMENTIA, Elizabeth Tierney has written an affecting account about caring for her beloved husband for nine years as he deteriorated from a particularly vicious form of dementia. She writes with directness and humour of her experience in hopes that others – and there are and will be so many - may avoid the many pitfalls she faced.

'Diagnosed with dementia in 1997, my husband, Jim, lived at home during his illness and died there in January 2006. I wish this story were fiction, but it is not. Dignifying Dementia is both a love story and an attempt to reach out to others who are living through or who will live through a similar tragedy. It is written in the hope that others might benefit from what I learned as the caregiver of a dementia victim. Only then will Jim's cruel affliction serve some purpose, because it might help others feel less lonely, bewildered, angry or frustrated than I did, shorten the dreadful learning curve, or encourage others to ask more questions and make fewer assumptions. And because it might remind members of the health care industry – from physicians to orderlies, from agency administrators to certified nursing assistants – that dementia victims and their loved ones are human beings who deserve respect, kindness, empathy and patience, so often lost in our fast-paced society.

The diagnostic process I describe was painful and disappointing; perhaps someone else's caregiving experience might be easier. Caring for Jim was exhausting; perhaps someone else's might be less draining. Watching someone lose his or her mind and body is not polite. It is rude and mean-spirited. Dementia brutalized Jim and stole the love of my life from me. It altered him, us and me.
This is not a medical text; it is the story of our experience with dementia and the lessons I learned as I tried to be Jim's voice, to maintain his dignity and to care for him and for me.'

DIGNIFYING DEMENTIA is now available in Kindle ebook format from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk and available for pre-order in paperback also (release date September 30).

Why Big Macs Don't Cost The Same in Every Country

Quick Win Economics, Answers to your top 100 economics questions, by Stephen Kinsella, is now launched by Oak Tree Press, Ireland. Part of the Quick Win series, the book has a unique grid system to search across a range of topics.

Cork, Ireland -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/02/2011 -- Quick Win Economics is aimed at practical people who understand that economics is important, because economic models inform the most powerful people in the world, who make decisions based on the advice of economists. Those decisions affect the daily lives of millions of people for better and for worse. The mistakes of economists can have serious consequences, so it pays to know what they are talking about.

Quick Win Economics will help you decode economic phenomena – and is designed so that you can dip in and out as you'd like, looking for answers to questions you might have or just a place to start to understand the theory. Each entry is tagged by one of five subject areas: Economics Essentials, Micro-economics, Macro-economics, Economic Policy, Applied Economics.

The author, Stephen Kinsella, is a lecturer in economics at the University of Limerick, Ireland.

He holds a BA (Mod) from Trinity College, Dublin, in economics, an MEconSc and PhD from NUI, Galway and an MA, MPhil and PhD from the New School for Social Research, New York, all in economics. He is interested in computable economics, experimental economics and Irish public policy.

Sample questions include:

• What are economic indicators?

• What is risk aversion?

• How are the parts of the economy connected together?

• What is deflation and why is it worrying?

• Why does every country have a central bank? What does it do?

• Can the government manage the economy through monetary policy?

• Could we ever have a zero inflation economy?

• What is money and why is it useful?

• And, why don't Big Macs cost the same in every country?

You can also use the grid system in the contents section to search for questions and answers across a range of topics or use the thread of cross-references provided at the end of each question and answer.
