United International College's CAPS Department Becomes ACE

Zhuhai, Guangdong -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/02/2015 -- Hong Kong Baptist University United International College's Centre for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) formally changed its department name to Academy of Continuing Education (ACE).

The role of ACE at UIC is to leverage the strong caliber of UIC academic teachers and UIC's networks to supports professionals and students to sharpen their skills to advance their careers and studies. Also ACE wants to advocate the notion of "Lifelong Learning" and support the growth of UIC as a whole.

The main reason for the name change is that the former name of Centre for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) in both the Chinese and English language caused some confusion towards our target audience ;therefore, it was agreed to use a more standardized name to illustrate their main roles.

To celebrate the change,ACE held an official Grand Opening ceremony and provided wine and cheese. An open invitation was sent to staff, and to welcome them to the ceremony where ACE can explain the changes while also providing a chance to share and discuss ideas openly for the department. Michael Ching, the Director of ACE, opened up the ceremony by welcoming everyone, followed by the announcement for the winner and runner-ups for the ACE logo design. Zhang Ling, a Public Relations and Advertising student, scooped up the first prize, which was the latest Apple Watch for her winning design; other prizes included Beats speakers.

When asked about how they decided to select the new logo, Mr. Chinq said "Initially, we wanted to tap UIC students' talent to design the logo and did forgo to use the external designer". They then decided to use a selection process that would be three-folded. The first part was to select the best of 15 among all entries; then an online poll where observers could vote narrowed it down to the top five. Finally, the winning design was selected by a panel that was made up of the Associate Dean of DHSS, the Director of MPRO as well as the Director of ACE.

The responses from students were overwhelming and received a total of 67 artworks, and the online voting totally caught ACE by surprise with frantic activities by the participants to support their own friends or their favorites.

The key mission of ACE is to serve as an arm of UIC to provide quality education and training for individuals or institutions in the community to attain personal educational aspirations or professional goals. Through these means ACE brings in additional tuition fees to support the growth of UIC. Last year ACE increased the amount of courses they offered from 11 to 27, and this year they will aim to reach 45, which is a 67% increase. ACE has plans to expand into other educational offerings by introducing courses/programmes such as Indoor Air Quality, Food Hygiene and Safety, CIMA, CMA, CFA, CFP, CHICPA, FRM, French TEF, Spanish DELE, German Goethe-Zertifikat, Korean and Japanese languages and cultural classes, School Teacher Qualification Certificate, 3D Printing, Art and Design, etc.

Four types of trainings have been developed by ACE, which are Institutional and Governmental Bespoke Training, International Professional Certificatation, Preparation for Overseas Examinations and Summer Courses.

BNU-HKBU United International College Welcomes All International Visiting and Degree-Seeking Students

Zhuhai, Guangdong -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/12/2015 -- United International College (UIC) is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Since its inauguration in 2005 the college has gradually developed the option for foreign students to take part in one of their 20 programmes. Prospective candidates can either be degree-seeking students or visiting students half-way through a degree, looking to study abroad for six months or even a year.

Co-founded by Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), UIC is the first full-scale cooperation in higher education between Mainland China and Hong Kong.

As of 2015, there are twenty undergraduate programmes being offered by three divisions: the Division of Business and Management, the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Division of Science and Technology. Classrooms are state-of-the-art and e-learning is an integral part of UIC's Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning approach.

There are currently around 5000 students, including those from Hong Kong, Macau and overseas. English is used as the medium of instruction and the teaching staff are from more than 20 countries and regions.

Degree-seeking students will be awarded a Bachelor's Degree (Honours) by HKBU and a Graduation Certificate by UIC upon completion of the programme.

Alongside their major field of study, students take part in General Education and Whole Person Education classes. These classes promote a balanced mind, ensuring internationally-recognized quality and excellence in education, equipping graduates with seven attributes: citizenship, knowledge, learning, skills, creativity, communication, and teamwork.

Visiting students will be placed with a Chinese roommate to enhance immersion into the local student life. They also have the opportunity to partake in Chinese language classes and can learn about the culture, the history and the development of China's politics.

Moreover, UIC is located in Zhuhai and therefore boasts a vibrant student life with many clubs, including archery, rock climbing, yoga and traditional dragon and lion dance.

The cost to study a degree course is RMB¥ 80,000 per annum (Around $12,000 based on September 2015 exchange rate). Accommodation fee is roughly RMB¥ 5,000 per annum, while the insurance fee will cost RMB¥ 600 per annum. Monthly estimated expenses will approximately cost RMB¥ 1,200 per month.

UIC normally expects degree-seeking applicants to have obtained 12-year pre-university years of schooling. Admission will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Visiting students who are not seeking a full 4 year degree must have completed at least one year of university study as well as having a minimum GPA of 2.5 (4-point scale) or equivalent. Students whose native language is not English must have a minimum TOEFL score of 55(paper-based)/ 213(computer-based)/80 or above or have received an IELTS score of 6.0 or above.

If you wish to register and become a student, you can contact UIC's International Development Office (IDO) to find out further information as well as the application form to become a full-time degree-seeking student. UIC can help with all questions and queries as well as providing support for obtaining a visa.

The deadline to apply for four year degree-seeking students for the 2016 autumn semester is May 2016, while visiting students need to apply before October 2015.
