In 2011, president Obama issued the first ever Presidential Proclamation designating October as National Substance Abuse Prevention Month and 5 years later we are still working towards promoting a safer, healthier drug-free America. Community leaders, community partners, schools, colleges and workplaces are joining together to educate and promote awareness to stop substance abuse before it begins.

The key to stopping the growing substance abuse problem in America is preventing drug use before it starts. By reaching out and educating our communities we can put a stop to substance abuse before it happens. A crucial part in stopping substance abuse before it happens is raising awareness with our youth. Teaching our young has proven to be the most cost effective way to reduce drug use and its consequences. A study has found that each dollar invested in prevention programs with in a school can reduce costs related to substance use disorders up to $18.

If you are interested in helping White Sands Treatment Center raise awareness this October for National Substance Abuse Prevention Month there are a number of things you can do. Getting social is another great way to raise awareness. By sharing images, facts, and personal stories on social websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube you can reach hundreds to thousands of people not only in your community but worldwide.
The first year they gave out 6,000 ribbons at a local event to anyone who wished to wear a ribbon to honor a friend, family member or partner who had passed from a drug overdose even if they were not directly affected. The second year of the Overdose Awareness Day event a steel badge was given out and requests for badges and information came in from all over Australia and New Zealand. Since then the International Overdose Awareness Day has grown into a worldwide event that communities, health centers, hospitals, awareness groups, government and non-government organizations participate in all in hope of helping to end this preventable tragedy that continues to occur across the world.

Alternative addiction recovery activities at White Sands Treatment Center that are provided to help an addict on his or her substance abuse journey. The bonfire takes place in Immokalee, Florida on the Seminole Indian Reservation just a short drive away from the White Sands Treatment Center. Raynaldo (Ray) and his wife Norita Yzaguirre host the monthly spiritual bonfire for White Sands and multiple other addiction recovery groups. These spiritual bonfires are to help addicts and loved ones of addicts find support on their road to recovery.

Ray Yzaguirre, who has been sober for over 10 years, leads the bonfire by sharing some of his experiences in active addiction and in recovery. After sharing about himself he gives a guest speaker the opportunity to share their own experience with addiction recovery with the group. At this point in the night the group breaks to share a BBQ dinner that Ray and his wife supply by the light of the bonfire.

After dinner Ray will get up and speak about the importance of asking for help and having hope and faith while in recovery. Attendees are then invited to step forward and share their own personal stories and experiences if willing. To conclude the night Ray and Norita raffle off prices to those who attended the event.

"The spiritual nature of the event is validated by sitting on Seminole Reservation land, seeing the fire in the moonlight and feeling the energy of the attendees. It is not a religious based group rather it's more spiritual in nature" says Adam Hochberg, White Sands Community Outreach Director. At White Sands Treatment Center we believe that a patient's chance of a successful recovery is significantly enhanced by involvement in these types of support groups.

White Sands Treatment Center Encourages Public to Take Part in Alcohol Awareness Month 2016

Annual observance increases awareness on alcohol-related issues

Fort Myers, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/07/2016 -- The White Sands Treatment Center family is encouraging people of all ages to take part in Alcohol Awareness Month this April, an event sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) since 1987. This annual observance increases the public's awareness and understanding on alcoholism, in addition to helping reduce the stigma that is often associated with alcohol-related issues.

The theme for 2016 is geared towards young men and women and is titled, "Talk Early, Talk Often: Parents Can Make a Difference in Teen Alcohol Abuse." April will be comprised of various local, state and national events geared towards educating youth about alcoholism, how to treat and prevent it, and how parents can teach children about the effects alcoholism can have on their life. Events are typically held through local NCADD affiliates, in addition to community organizations, churches, schools, colleges, and more.

The mission of this year's theme is to educate young people about how dangerous alcohol can be to themselves and others around them. Alcohol is directly tied to violence, suicide, traffic deaths, alcohol overdose, unsafe sex, failure in school, and behavioral issues. Because adolescence is typically a time when young men and women engage in risky behaviors, it is crucial that parents inform their sons or daughters about the risks before they learn about alcohol through an untrusted source. Studies show that children who have conversations about alcohol and drugs with their parents or guardians are 50 percent less likely to touch the substances over those children who do not have these types of conversations. This statistic is a great reminder to have this conversation with your children during Alcohol Awareness Month.

This year's month-long observance begins with an Alcohol-Free Weekend (April 1 – 3), which was designed to raise awareness about alcohol use in individuals, families and communities. During the weekend, the NCADD invites everyone, young and old, to engage in three alcohol-free days. For anyone who struggles with this three-day period, they invite him or her to reach out to their local NCADD affiliates in order to get help.

White Sands Treatment Center Offers Sobriety Tips for Ultra Music Festival 2016

Keep these tips in mind for staying sober at music concerts and festivals

Fort Myers, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/15/2016 -- The White Sands Treatment Center is reaching out to men and women who plan to attend this week's Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida, in hopes of helping them maintain their sobriety while enjoy this year's concert. Held in Downtown Miami, The Ultra Music Festival has become known as one of the nation's most popular outdoor electronic music festivals with hundreds of thousands of attendees each year.

As with many music concerts and festivals, drugs and alcohol are usually onsite, which when combined with the intensity and excitement of the festivities, can prove to be the perfect storm of temptation that could lead to a relapse.

The White Sands Treatment Center wants to remind those in recovery that there are ways to maintain your sobriety while enjoying your favorite live music. That's why we would like to offer some sobriety tips for Ultra Music Festival 2016. Be sure to have the right support system with you at the festival. Supportive friends or family members, or fellow recovery acquaintances can provide the encouragement and safety you need in an environment where drugs and alcohol will be readily available.

Be sure to discuss beforehand your plan should anyone outside of your group offer you an alcoholic beverage or drugs. In addition, always purchase your own drinks and keep them with you at all times. If you cannot find anyone in your support system that can attend the festival with you, search message boards and forums online for sober fan groups. Many large music festivals have fan clubs that are recovery based and have members who support and encourage one another during concerts. Some of these groups even set up their own tents at festivals so fans can connect and enjoy the music together while staying sober.

Another sobriety method you might want to employ is to kick-off and end your concert celebration with recovery activities. You can think of this method as bookends to the actual music event. Be sure to attend a recovery meeting before the festival and/or meet up with your sponsor or counselor right after the event ends.

Also, before attending the festival, keep in mind that you want this event to be memorable in a positive way. Being sober during the concert allows your mind to be clear and you to be completely present in the experience.

Last, have an escape plan ahead of time. If you begin to feel pressured or overwhelmed keep the number handy of a supportive friend or counselor who can help you get through it. You may also want to scout out some safe places you can be alone when you first arrive at the festival, should you need to get away from tempting atmospheres. Prepare to leave the festival all together if the pressure becomes too much to handle and you are tempted to engage in relapse behavior.

White Sands Treatment Center Observes Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week

Annual weeklong observance reaches out to children affected by parents with addiction

Fort Myers, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/17/2016 -- The White Sands Treatment Center is excited to take part in a very important awareness campaign, the Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week, happening from February 14 – 20, 2016. This special weeklong observance takes place every year through efforts by The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) and aims to offer hope to teenagers and children whose lives are being impacted by a parent or parents who are struggling with addiction. The mission is to call caring adults to be proactive, learn more about the signs of addiction, and offer hope and help to children who are living with and influenced by an addicted parent. The campaign's slogan is, "Become the star in the life of a child," inviting loving adults to shine brightly and stand as a beckon for children by modeling health behavior and demonstrating options that involve healthy living.

This weeklong observance is vital as many adults are unaware of the statistics and figures of children living with parents who are struggling with addiction. According to NACoA's "7 Facts about COAs" factsheet, two babies are born to addicted parents every second of every hour of every day! In addition, forty-three percent of U.S. adults have been exposed to alcoholism in their family and an estimated 18.25 million children are currently living in a home with a family addiction issue.

Because of the seriousness of these statistics, it is up to a concerned adult to take action and be the shining light in the life of a child.

Numerous studies show that just one supportive adult who reaches out to a child or teen and stands as a strong role model can positively change the course of that child's life.

For instance, neighbors of that child, who are armed with the knowledge that he or she might be living in a home filled with chaos due to addiction, may be vital to that child's safety. Aunts and uncles can also play an important role in supporting their nieces and nephews. Children need to be aware that there is a safe place to go should they need one and that "safe" people who can be trusted are nearby. It is also crucial that faith and educational leaders learn more about addiction. Through the love of caring adults who show support and model healthy behaviors to these children, a child at risk can become a child of promise.

To become more involved in the Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week and/or learn more about addiction, children of parents who are addicted, etc., visit NACoA's awareness website link.

White Sands' Adds Luxury Holistic Spa with Lavish Amenities

Alternative therapies have been shown to provide multiple health benefits to recovering addicts

Fort Myers, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/11/2016 -- At White Sands Treatment Center, we understand that each client needs an individualized and specific treatment plan when it comes to recovery and healing. We are a luxury holistic spa. This is why we offer a tailored approach that combines traditional methods with alternative rehabilitation therapies. Many of these alternative options can be found in our new luxurious onsite spa. From chiropractic care and yoga to exercise facilities, massage and more, each of these therapies provides their own unique benefits to an individual who is recovering from addiction.

Yoga is one of our highly sought after spa amenities by clients. This practice provides a sense of peace and is very calming to someone in recovery. It has been shown to increase the production of the neurotransmitter GABA, which can help increase low levels usually found in those with alcohol or drug dependence by up to twenty percent. Increasing this neurotransmitter has been shown to reduce anxiety and fear. Our yoga sessions provide White Sand clients with an opportunity to learn breathing techniques, muscle stretching exercises and more about their emotional state. It also helps clients infuse discipline into their routine, a vital skill when it comes to a successful recovery.

Acupuncture and massage therapy are also popular spa amenities at White Sands. Acupuncture treatment, which dates back over 3,000 years, have been a proven remedy for addiction. Studies show it can decrease feelings of stress and anxiety, which are common triggers for those with addiction issues. Acupuncture can also help clients reduce cravings, and provide relief when it comes to pain, depression and even withdrawal symptoms! Many clients report that acupuncture sessions have helped them feel more comfortable, calm and relaxed, three attributes that have the potential to ease the recovery process.

Massage therapy is another beneficial service we offer at our luxury holistic spa for a recovering addict. It calms the entire body and releases endorphins, which may reduce one's cravings. This type of therapy also helps patients become more aware of themselves and what is going on in their body, how they are feeling, etc. In addition, it helps many patients clear and reset their minds so they can focus on positive things happening in their lives.

In addition to the above-mentioned services, many of our clients also take part in strength training and cardio-focused exercise programs that can improve an addict's memory and cognition, as well as help to increase self-esteem and strengthen muscles and bones. Chiropractic treatments and biofeedback are also available to clients who are interested. Each therapy option allows the client to renew his or her mind and begin to see their body as a sacred vessel that need to be cared for and loved. Addicts begin to better understand the damage alcohol and drugs have done to their bodies and slowly learn to adopt healthier, more positive lifestyle choices.
