Originally the song only consisted of the chorus, yet with the joint efforts of Kresovich and Harris to finish the song, "Thorns" has been created. While another key person worth mentioning and made the song possible was Hayden Frank, the bassist of a rock band X Ambassadors, who wrote the song's bass guitar line.

When the demo was completed in early 2014, the group hoped that Cee Lo Green would hear it. A label guy once approached them and promised to get the song to him.
